Hi all. Sorry about the double post, the site seems to be very slow at the moment. Anyway, I was reading a "debate" on a message board recently (not this site) and I found myself affected by the bare-faced, almost wilfull inability to actually debate as opposed to post vitriolic opinions as assertively as possible. So I wrote this (it also comes partly from the phrase "opinions are like aresholes, everybody has one"

Bigotry, opinion and thoughts abound
Informed, deformed, ideologically unsound

Procreate, defecate, come bring out your dead
Find out what is true, at least inside your head

Try and find some reason, o'er the fulminating din
Try and find a school, where reason's not stretched thin

Try and divorce feeling from the rational and pure
You notice all the thought disease, but do you see a cure?

To reason, infer, conclude, from the facts that are at hand
Transcending all base thought, as it slips away like sand

Achieving such lucidity is a goal that's not so See it from the viewpoint of an unenlightened child

And remember how the saying goes, opinions are like arseholes,
Everybody has one and they act as burning coals

On the crackling fire of futile debate, but I would add one bit
Everyone has an opinion, and most are full of shit

Adequate, though you manage to wring little poetic flight or metonymy from a medium (rhyming couplets) that is really quite restrictive, and needs to be well-handled in terms of metaphor, metonymy and simile. I found it uninvolving but then, it's a fairly uninvolving subject as far as I'm concerned, so you're not at fault for that. Exhibits the conventions of rhetoric rather better than it dies poetic ones.

Thanks for the reponses so far.

Rotting - like the rating, slightly bemused by the comment.

Levchik - yes, Americans are like that, but so are the rest of the world unfortunately. It is the despair precipitated by this whicih lead me to write this poem whilst sitting at work.

Apparently a rating of plus one means "Made me smile". It's not really that kind of article, but the contents is most true. Especially of Americans. Good post.

i am job.

Lisa, if you don't like your job you don't strike. You just go in
every day and do it really half-assed. That's the American way.
