Now, let me just say that I know I shouldn't post this. It's just one of those things that's a stupid thought in your head that you know that --no matter how hard you try-- if you tell it to anyone else, they'll think you're either crazy or an idiot. But nevertheless, I guess I just want to say stupid, offensive things.
Here it is: Whenever I hear Led Zeppelin's "Stairway to Heaven" --and we've all heard it-- I think of 9/11. And it's not because I was listening to it on 9/11 or anything. It's just that the lyrics bring a vision of 9/11-related things to my mind. I have actually even wondered--when high--if Zeppelin had some sort of LSD trip to see what had happened (right, I know, HERE'S where I start sounding completely insane, right?)
But, let me give you the lyrics. Please note that all numerals go down to footnotes about what I think the line references in my head.
-----------------------------
There's a lady (1) who's sure
All that glitters is gold (2)
And she's buying a stairway to heaven. (3)
When she gets there she knows
If the stores are all closed (4)
With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven. (3)
There's a sign on the wall
But she wants to be sure
'cause you know sometimes words have two meanings. (5)
In a tree by the brook
There's a songbird who sings,
Sometimes all of our thoughts are misgiven. (6)
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it makes me wonder.
There's a feeling I get (7)
When I look to the west,
And my spirit is crying for leaving. (8)
In my thoughts I have seen
Rings of smoke through the trees, (9)
And the voices of those who standing looking.
Ooh, it makes me wonder,
Ooh, it really makes me wonder.
And it's whispered that soon
If we all call the tune
Then the piper (10) will lead us to reason.
And a new day will dawn
For those who stand long
And the forests will echo with laughter. (11)
If there's a bustle in your hedgerow
Don't be alarmed now,
It's just a spring clean for the may queen. (12)
Yes, there are two paths you can go by
But in the long run
There's still time to change the road you're on.
And it makes me wonder.
Your head is humming and it won't go
In case you don't know,
The piper's calling you to join him,
Dear lady, can you hear the wind blow,
And did you know
Your stairway lies on the whispering wind. (13)
CHANGE IN SONG (14)
And as we wind on down the road
Our shadows taller than our soul.
There walks a lady we all know
Who shines white light and wants to show (15)
How ev'rything still turns to gold.
And if you listen very hard
The tune will come to you at last.
When all are one and one is all
To be a rock and not to roll.
And she's buying a stairway to heaven.
-------------------------
1. The lady is the Statue of Liberty sitting in New York AND represents America itself.
2. America's optomism and capitalist philosophy.
3. A poetic double-meaning that she intends to buy everything, life is about money, and then the meaning foreshadowing the coming tragedy.
4. When the World Trade Center was built, New York City had to find an area to build it in. The city decided to buy out the entire radio-store district, because radios were on their way out, thanks to television. Thus, all the stores of old times were moved out of the way for progress and massive business.
5. I always imagine one of those bums in New York that walk around with their "The End is Near" signs. While the end of the world is not coming, the end of the World Trade Center is.
6. I also think of a double meaning. A- People enjoying themselves in the park, thinking about the birds and not the coming planes of destruction. B- America's mind as a whole on other things instead of terrorism.
7. We're now in the mind of the terrorists while they were in the Middle East.
8. They want to leave to destroy the "evil" that they see.
9. The destruction of the buildings. This line is followed with "And the screams of those who stand looking."
10. The piper is Osama bin Laden. He is leading the Islamic militants to victory over the world's only superpower.
11. The forrests I interpret as the lands which the Muslim world exists. It's mostly 3rd world, rustic, undeveloped lands.
12. A warning that all pre-9/11 terrorism (embassy bombings, USS Cole attack) is nothing compared to what is coming.
13. I see this as a taunt of America (or the statue). The stairway to heaven, which we would have thought as our prosperity is now literally the stairway to which our people will go to heaven after they are killed. It lies on the whispering wind quite literally once the airplanes get in the air.
14. I see this very passionate change in the feeling of the song as when the planes hit the buildings. Through the rest of the song, one could envision the buildings in flames, falling, the Pentagon, and the ensuing terror.
15. The lady (America & the statue) still stand. The statue's white flame still stands. Optomism still exists.
Anyway, that's what I think of when I hear "Stairway to Heaven" since 9/11.

The less you understand about something the more meaning you can add to it.

Led Zeppelin is awesome. However, why do people think Jimmy Page was some sort of Messiah, he was just a wonderful musician. I like the songs "The Ocean" and "Over the Hills and Far Away" the best though. Still, for mentioning Led Zeppelin, I give you +2.

I'm pretty sure it's just the drugs talking, but this actually makes sense. But I always thought Stairway was derived more from Lord of the Rings, especially the "And the feeling I get, when I look to the west, and my spirit is crying for leaving" part because it seems like that would be something Frodo would say or think. And the part right after that about the forest would be a metaphor for Sauron/Saruman's conquest of land.

hahaha, cant loose our heads and invade iraq...
i think iraq was a dangerous dictatorship and probably should have been invaded, but i think george bush was a lieing dick doing it for the wrong reasons and made up all that for an excuse... im normally pretty right-wing but i think i may be routing for kerry.. bush kind of scares me :p
wow, i really doubt that they saw it on an acid trip or it really has anything to do with 9/11, but you could call that a moderate conicdedence; youd be suprised how often things match up.. but the whole thing did is kinda freaky.
i gotta say that was interesting and must have taken alot of thought; led zeppelin also kickass!

With a word she can get what she came for.
Ooh, ooh, and she's buying a stairway to heaven. (3)

I ALSO FORGOT!
The very last line. To be a rock and not a roll. When one man on a plane died, he said, as he charged the cabin, "Let's rock n roll." This is not just a reference to that, but also saying that America must be strong to survive 9/11, but we can't loose our heads, and say, invade Iraq...
