BANG.
BANG B-B-BANG BANG!
The windows shudder, the walls shudder. The whole house is shaking from the explosions less than half a mile away.
And all I can think of is the bombs which sound just the same, hundreds of miles away, or decades in the past, their sound made bracingly real here and now.
It's only fireworks. They're celebrating. It's anyone's guess what they're celebrating, but it's accepted that fireworks are a sign of joy and general merriment. I just suddenly realised that I will never, ever view them the same way again.
Because on the off-chance that some day we decide we've won any one of the hundreds of battles, wars and occupations happening around the world, you can bet there will be fireworks, and all I will hear is the sound of all the bombs they dropped, all the screams, not of the people enjoying the display, but of the people who were killed by the bombs. The babies who cry, the birds who scatter, the pets who lie down and whimper from the noise are the ones who get it right.
They don't say "rejoice" to me any more. They say, "Look at us. We make a lot of noise and scare the living hell out of anyone who doesn't understand what's happening. We even make the ones who know exactly what's happening jump a little. We are bright explosions which cut through the night, our smoke blocks the moon and if you get too close, you'll get seriously hurt." More or less the same message, when it comes down to it.
It's a shame. I used to like fireworks.
