To say I was exhausted the morning after the storm would be an understatement. The 150 Mph Winds had destroyed my home and many others. The police station, the high school, and the mental hospital had all been obliterated in this dusty town of Knob's End, Alabama.
The Holiday Inn had been the largest building in town left standing and by noon, a shelter was set up with 428 newly homeless craming into the main conference hall. We curled up in hotel sheets, fire blankets, Sleeping bags, and whatever else we could find.
The 38 mental patients were placed in a separate conference room with nurses and orderlies trying to keep tabs on all of them. On the most part, they were quiet and scared, but occasionally an outburst could be heard through the wall.
Later that evening, a commotion broke out and a man riding a unicycle crashed throught the conference room's oak doors and began screaming at the top of his lungs about cheese.
"Monterey Jack. There. Swiss. There. Feta. There. Parmesean. There, there, there. So there."
I took a picture before the orderlies tackled him and took his unicycle away. I felt bad for the guy.
