"You know, Julius, with the story you've told me, it sounds like you need to plead self-defense."
Julius sat in front of his lawyer. He had been in jail for three days, and the beatings at the hands of the officers were relentless. They were always careful to never leave any marks on his face or arms. The majority of the blows landed on his sternum and calf muscles. Every morning so far was filled with pain as he rolled out of bed to prepare for his meeting with his attorney, and the next beating afterwards.
"Mike, I really think I should plead guilty. That way, I might have a chance of serving a lesser prison term and-"
"Look, Julius, right now the odds are stacked completely against you. The public, the judge, and the jury want you imprisoned for life, and if you plead guilty, you might just get that. Right now, you're looking at a class two felony for kidnapping, second degree murder, resisting arrest, and the list goes on. Not to mention the other offenses were with a minor. You know you're being charged with rape?"
Julius sat back stunned.
"WHAT!? I did not rape that girl! You and I have been friends for thirteen years, Mike. You of all people should know I didn't rape her!"
"Look, all I'm saying is that you're looking at a possible sexual offense. I don't necessarily believe that you're actually guilty-"
"No no no no, that isn't possible. Did the police take her to the hospital?"
"Yes, of course. The hospital records show that she was admitted to Saint Mark's hospital, and doctors found upon examination that she was indeed raped. However, no traces of semen were found at the crime scene, or anywhere for that matter."
"THEY'RE FUCKING WRONG, MIKE!! It was HER FATHER!! I care too much about her to do such a despicable thing to her!!"
Mike sat back and popped his fingers. It was a nervous habit, and at the moment, he was very nervous. Right now, he was sitting with an angry man who is looking at rock bottom. There was no telling what he could do. Julius could see that Mike was uncomfortable.
"Has she said anything about the incident?"
Mike looked down at the table. He knew Julius wouldn't like this part.
"She hasn't said anything yet. Remember Julius, she's a minor. It's going to be very hard to use any information she might give, let alone getting her to talk about it. You killed her father right in front of her, Julius, and I'm sure that kind of action would traumatize any child."
Julius stared back at him. This news was not good. Lana was his only chance at serving a smaller sentence, and if she didn't testify, he would be spending the rest of his life in prison. But there was something about Mike that didn't seem right.... since Julius was sitting across from the table, he wasn't able to pick up exactly what it was.
"Don't look at me like that. You know I hate it when you try and read my thoughts."
Julius lowered his eyes. Mike was one of the few people who was aware of Julius' abilities. He didn't necessarily agree with Julius reading people's lives, but nevertheless, he kept it a secret.
"Mike, be honest with me. Is there something that you need to tell me?"
"No, Julius. This is just a lot to take in, and I'm sure your family is just as worried as I am about you. Look, we're done here, so just take it easy tonight, and we can talk about the case in a few days."
Julius didn't respond. There was something off about Mike's demeanor, and the fact that he had left so abruptly only made Julius wonder even more.
The trial would soon answer all of Julius' questions. It was time to go back to his cell, and await his next beating. Perhaps it wouldn't be as bad.....
