Well, I'm pretty sure that there has been a post on this by now, although I was unable to find one in the search engine. I think that too many people bitch about the rating system, and that there needs to be some consistency in how we all rate things. Granted people's opinions will always differ, but sometimes I feel that most people don't even know how they should be rating.
I see alot of stuff that has averages around 0.5 that is complete garbage. I also see alot of stuff that is -2'd to death unfairly. With these types of posts in mind, I present to you:
The FearBenzene guide to rating!!! (Some sort of dumb trumpet solo here)
-2: Don't bother

I see this used alot, and lord knows that I tend to use it more than I should. I believe that a -2 should only be used when you are absolutely sure that there is no value to the post. Examples would be things like "Hi I'm new, I like apples, that is all" or "America sucks because it's in the western hemisphere." Before you go and -2, be sure that nothing is to be gained from reading.
-1: I've seen better

This is a tough one, because technically you have ALWAYS seen better. I feel that a -1 should be used when a post has some value, and could be deemed enjoyable by some users, but is generally poor. Examples of a -1 would be things like "Have you ever wondered how dolphin safe tuna fish really is? (continued on for a paragraph)" and "Theres this new show that is about eating other people for prizes (Fridays at 9PM, FOX)."
0: Worth reading

This is meant to be for your average post on ubersite. I feel that a 0 is very representitive of the "meh" feeling that one has after reading the post. The post should attain a 0 when there is nothing that makes you say "this is stupid" while at the same time nothing stands out to you. Examples would be things like "I recently found that Rod Stewart kicks ass (followed by 3 or so paragraphs)."
+1: Made me smile

This one is actually the easiest to determine. The fact that it says "Made me smile" should indicate that at the end of a post, put your hand to your mouth. If the corners of your mouth are notably higher than the middle of your mouth, but you feel that it still didn't have everything you desired in a post, give it a +1. Examples would be things like "How to tell if the chick you're going out with is really a guy (NSFW)" and "Hot Pockets: A tribute to a food far ahead of it's time."
+2: Kicker of all ass

This about this one for a minute. Kicker of all ass. A +2 should be treated like a 10 out of 10, where a post has good structure, keeps the reader interested, Little to no errors, and leaves you quite pleased that you read it. Seperating a +2 from a +1 is like distuingishing Super Troopers from Groundhog Day. While both are good, Super Troopers leaves a plethora of images and quotes for you to be able to recall (I swear to God I'm going to pistol whip the next guy who says shenanigans / Hey Farva, what's the name of that restaurant you like with all the goofy stuff on the wall and the mozzarella sticks? / You mean Shenanigans?) , while Groundhog Day does not.

I actually changed S/N's in may, although my other SN was registered in late March. I have been reading this site for far longer than that, and would likely have an ID number around 3000 if I had registered upon my initial visit. I have seen thousands of posts and read thousands of reviews, so I feel I am qualified to make such a list.

I'm not a big fan of the unofficial "no posts about Uber" rule. Frankly I don't take kindly to people telling me what I should or shouldn't write about. But hey, that's my axe to grind.
Funny thing is, when Razor wrote about how everyone should get more hard-core on rating posts to curb grade inflation, I'd be willing to bet he was well received. Wonder if he got the obligatory -2?

Super Troopers is without a doubt one of the worst movies I've ever seen, however the first 15 minutes or so were hysterical. That's why I was so pissed when the day after I had gone to see it in the theater saw an ad on ESPN.com where you could download the first 12 minutes of the movie - the only part worth seeing.
