---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"Mister Delmedico, can you explain in your own words what happened on March fifteenth?"

Julius sat in front of the courtroom. Never in his entire life had he been so terrified of speaking to strangers. Ironic, really. He himself could see an entire life exposed before him, but now he had to expose himself. Every eye was on him, waiting for him to explain why he mutilated Joseph Highland, father of an eleven year-old he dared to love.

"On March fifteenth, at approximately noontime, I had gone to visit a student of mine at her home in West Haven."
"Please state the student's name for the record."
"Lana Highland."
"Ah. Now, Mister Delmedico, what would compel you to visit your student? I'm sure you were aware of the consequences."

Julius knew exactly where this would lead. And what frightened him more was that there was nothing he could do about it.

"Well... it had occurred to me that Miss Highland had missed school. I was worried about her."
"You were worried about her? Did it not occur to you that sometimes a student might miss school on occasion?"
"She had been coming into school with bruises. I suspected her father was-"
"Abusing her? And you, without any proof, drove 40 miles to this young lady's house to confront her father?"
"That's not what I'm saying. I-"
"Answer the question, Mister Delmedico. Did you drive to Joseph Highland's home with the intent to confront him about SUSPECTED abuse?"

Julius was trapped. He waited for Mike to call an objection. Something. Anything that would stop the line of questioning.

Nothing.

All eyes were on him, awaiting an answer. Honestly, he wasn't sure. Had he gone there simply because he was worried about her? Or had he gone there to confront her father? It had seemed so simple when he went there, why was it so confusing now? He nervously wiped his upper lip, and cleared his throat.

"Yes. I suppose I did, yes."
"Thank you. Then what happened?"

Julius hesitated. He couldn't tell the court about his gift. How would it sound if he said, "I saw in Lana's eyes that her father raped her"? There was no way to tell the court about his gift. There were witnesses who saw Julius attack first.

"I.... I saw that Lana had been hurt. There were marks on her body, and....."

He paused.

"I saw that Mister Highland was holding a baseball bat. I was concerned for Miss Highland's safety as well as my own. That's when I attacked him with the intention to disarm him."

There was a slight murmer through the courtroom. Julius was lying, and everybody knew it. You don't disarm somebody by rearranging their skull and ripping out their throat. The lawyer smirked. He had him.

"Your statement claims that you were defending yourself, Mister Delmedico. It also says here that you claim that her father raped her. Why did you run away? Why didn't you immediately take her to a hospital?"

Julius remained silent. There was no way to answer those questions. He knew he never raped her.... but was he innocent? Would she have been better off with her father alive?

"No further questions, your honor."

The judge turned to Julius.

"You may step down."

Julius took his seat next to Mike. Was the worst over? Why wasn't Mike effectively questioning the witnesses or Julius? Mike wouldn't even look him in the eye. What was going on!? He had to know. Julius looked at Mike, his friend for thirteen years, and his stomach dropped to his knees.

Everything came together.... the way Mike had left so abruptly.... the lack of evidence supporting his case.... but before he could completely take in what he saw in Mike, he heard something that nearly made him pass out:

"The prosecution would like to call Lana Highland to the stand."

To be continued.....

I had missed a few of these, I should have waited until I saw the word Final in the title. This is excellent, kind of Dead Zone-esque.

I bet courtroom drama is difficult to write, I stay away from it. But this piqued my interest for sure.

I guess Bart's not to blame. He's lucky, too, because it's spanking
season, and I got a hankering for some spankering!
