As Julius listened to Lana's testimony, he could feel himself growing dizzy. This wasn't right. It wasn't supposed to be this way....
"Miss Highland, could you please tell me what happened to you on the day your father was killed?"
The prosecutor seemed genuinely sympathetic towards Lana. After all, she had spent nearly an entire day with the monster that brutally murdered her father and tried to run away with her.
"I was sick, and my dad said I had to stay home from school. Then Mister Delmedico came to my house, and my dad said 'hello' to him, and then Mister Delmedico just hit him. He-"
Lana stopped for a second, choking back a sob.
"I know it's hard, Lana. But you have to tell these people what happened. Can you do that?"
The prosecutor soothed Lana with his words. She nodded, and after a moment, resumed her story.
"He kept hitting my dad, and then when he was done he grabbed me and took me inside the house. And he..... he hurt me. Every time I yelled, he would hit me. Then when he was done, he put me in the car and we drove away."
The prosecutor held up a photograph of Lana's face to the jury. Bruises covered her face and neck, and her lip was swollen terribly. "Her father did that to her, not me!! I'm innocent of these crimes!!" His mind chanted over and over. Julius wanted to scream. However, his lips stayed pressed firmly together, and he silently stared at her.
Julius knew what she was doing.... she was protecting herself. She knew that she helped him kill her father. She knew that she needed to cover it up by any means necessary. How could a child be so calculating?
"Lana, is this the man who hurt you and killed your father?" The prosecutor pointed at Julius.
"Yes."
"No further questions, your Honor."
Julius felt like he was going to faint. His world was coming apart before his eyes. Mike stood up. Perhaps Julius was wrong in his fears about Mike. Perhaps.....
"I have no questions, your Honor." Mike plainly said.
Julius turned to Mike with growing horror.
"What are you DOING!?" Julius hissed.
Mike slowly turned and looked back at Julius. He then brought Julius ear close, and whispered harshly:
"You know perfectly well what I'm doing. I'm making sure you're put away for what you did to that little girl, you sick fuck. I can't let you get away with this, not in good conscience. You're going to be put away, Julius, for a long long time."
Julius had been betrayed by the last two people he felt he could trust: His friend for thirteen years, and the little girl he loved. The world began to tilt underneath Julius' feet, and he broke out into a sweat. It couldn't be happening.... not to him. This was a nightmare. It had to be. I'm going to wake up.... I'm going to wake up....
Lana stepped down, and shot Julius a glance. "I'm sorry, Mister Delmedico. It has to be this way." Her eyes told him.
The jury left the courtroom to deliberate.
Julius left the courtroom and promptly vomited.
To be continued....
