Hello, Übersite. I've been AWOL from this site for a while now, but I've got something that at least a few of you may like to hear.
I've heard some feelings of discontent with Übersite from a few users. I've also heard ideas of a "members-only" type of Übersite, where only quality posts survive and consistently shitty users aren't allowed to make posts. I've listened to complaints about a limited rating system, the search feature not working, lists disappearing...
That's why I developed pulseHEAD ( http://www.pulsehead.com/ ). Things are slightly different there.
Is it very much like Übersite? Yes. Very much.
Am I wearing ladies' underwear? Uh... next question.
Do I think it could replace Übersite? No. Not at all.
Will it be a nice complement to Übersite? I surely hope so.
I've done a lot of development on it, but I'm sure there are still problems. I hope that if you're using it and you come across one, you'll let me know. It's still rough at the edges, and changes will be made.
Currently, to get a user account, you have to post a message and receive an overall positive rating after 24 hours. However, if you would like to be part of the initial user base, just reply to this message with your email address (and a username if you don't want to use your Übersite username) - I'll email you a username and password, bypassing the initial "review" period.

i think it might be a bit more sporting to acknowledge, in the 'about pulsehead' section, where the site comes from and why etc. obviously you like lots of thigns about uber - you've copied them - so i think it's not quite cricket if you don't aknowledge that.
everyone going there from uber knows the deal, but others would not.

Listen to yourselves. All of you are actively devoting brain power and thought to this "situation" where somebody has opened ANOTHER site like this one. Since when do you all take stake in Ubersite? Since when has ownership or webmastering responsibilites fallen on your shoulders for Ubersite? All of you who say that your User# and overall ranking don't matter are liars. It's obvious that it matters reading all this crap below. If you all didn't hold yourselves to some part of an "establishment" here you wouldn't feel so threatened by pulseHEAD. That's what this boils down to, you feel threatened don't you? If you didn't you wouldn't be getting all in a huff.
Razor, you need to fucking relax. Don't you have a life? Don't you date or have friends? You act like you owe Ubersite some responsibility to be a landlord around here and you also act as if Ubersite owes something to the posters. This sense of community you've built up is as strong as a house of cards.
To me and many of you, Ubersite is better than television, what's wrong with having more than one channel?

dude...i know you hate people posting crappy shit but your setup is going to limit your site to having just a handful of people and it will die out very soon unless it gets a stable base.
you should have set it up so that anyone can join but perhaps divide the front page into two columns....the first column having posts written by people with a rating of 0 or better (that way it would include new users), and the second column would have posts from those with negative ratings. That way, people have more of an incentive to post well written stuff because if they get shafted into the negative column, they are going to have to work a lot harder to bring their score into positive territory.
And you should definitely eliminate multiple voting on the same post: first vote counts, end of story.
These are merely suggestions. I hope your site works out for you.

I think Pilsehead is a great idea. Really I do. For a few months now Ubersite has been overflowing with talentless gits forever complaining about how " the uber elite have got it in for them" OR that " post opught to be rated on content", thereby implying that they aren't, Or how pised off they are/aren't about some obnoxious pustule who got banned/got reinstated/lost the will to post.
Well, Pulsehead is their opportunity to stop frothing at the mouth and start producing something worth reading. Think about it. Of all of the users I've seen comment on Pulsehead ( and by no means did I seek out all of them) only Hair & Bart represent anything worth reading at all, and then only on Uber. The rest is straightforward copy and plagiarism. Kind of a sad commentary for pulsehead, but no reason why it has to stay that way.
This, then, ought to be a golden opportunity for all of you and Uber itself ought to benefit too.

Since this looks like it's gonna be Most Heated for a while, I figured I'd make a few "challenges" to all my fellow uberers.
No, I'm doing this here, because I hate making "worthless" posts, and lack the credibility to get away with it without a negative rating.
So here is my challenge to anyone willing to take it up:
I would like to say a hitorical fictional series called "What If" posted by any user who thinks himself/herself worthy.
This post should be about either what the world would be like TODAY if Hitler had WWII, OR, if the USSR had won the Cold War. Add in interesting and complex characters and plot lines and you have yourself a damned good series that I would be dying to read. I hope someone sees this and does something about it, cause I'd love to see it.

Who cares? On days when I get the time to spend a lot of time on Uber, I sometimes get frustrated because there aren't many posts worth reading on the front page.
Want a confession? I've sometimes wished there was ANOTHER Ubersite that I could check out on these days.
Ubersite kicks ass and always will. It will always be the original and the best, but I have NO problem with competition in the marketplace of ideas.
Tell me about how much time and effor Bart has put into making Uber what it is and I will say that he has done that all of his own volition. No one has made him do it. He has regected ideas about making Uber a pay-site or to limit membership, or to take donations. If he's out time and effort, it isn't because there weren't other opportunities to be rewarded for it. He has his God status here and one can only assume that this is all the reward he wants out of his labor of love. God bless him for it. Sorry to say it, but no one OWES Bart anything, because he hasn't set a price for his work.
However, saying that Pulsehead MUST suck because it isn't Uber is like saying the Rolling Stones MUST suck because they aren't Elvis Presley. They are both "rock-and-roll" but only one is "The King."

I know that your comment is not directed specifically at me. But here is how I see it.
The problem here RB is that exact attitude. It's only a website so I can be as crude and crass and mean as I want to be. Plus it's anonymous so that makes it even better. It's not that what's written bothers me as much as it is that people write such stuff in the first place.
I have written my share of -2's but I don't think I've ever told someone that I wished they would die or written obnoxiously rude things to them for the sake of being rude. My only problem with ubersite as I see it is the ranking on posts. For me, a post that has 1.95 on 50 reviews is better than one that has 2 on 3 reviews. When I sort for best post ever, I don't want to see the pity +2's for shitty fiction beating out actual well done posts. Fix this, and I have no complaints.

Wow. These replies have given me some insight as to the real personalities that exist here at Uber.
Nothing generates insight better than controversy that leads to polarity.
Now, if anybody is interested, here's my 2 cents.
It's a website. Get over it.
Should gascs have solicited his site on Uber? Probably not.
Should gascs have used the Ubersite format with his own website? Remains to be seen. Obviously he respected bart enough to mirror some of the aspects of his site. Imitation is the highest form of flattery. He has also tried to respect the users here by giving them a format that is familiar to them. I find that interesting.
Should gascs be flamed in a relentless manner because he is trying to do something like this? No but unfortunately this is the nature of Uber and it only seems to be getting worse. I read every single one of these replies (call me crazy) because I had to get an idea of what exactly was going on here. I have seen every bad thing that I have seen on Uber over the past year, right here in one post.
Some of you can be so insensitive to each other, I swear to god. It's like gascs idea (and post) is a piece of meat that just got thrown into the pirahna pool at the zoo. The surface of the water is getting all bubbly with the ensuing frenzy. You are also attacking each other with as much vigor as the users who disapprove of gascs idea are attacking him.
I can't imagine bart is feeling upset or hurt over this. This whole website is based on the freedom to say or post almost anything with few exceptions.
I think Ubersite is great even though I've had my moments of doubt and frustration. I am sure that, with time gascs website may thrive as well. It's a big, wide world out there and there are many avenues for entertainment. I am appreciative of anyone who works hard to bring this entertainment to the general public.

I don't think anybody is leaving Uber, atz. At least I'm not. There is no censorship on pulseHEAD, it is voted on by the users. If the users of PH feel that someone is not worthy enough to hold an account they will give them a score that reflects that. It takes a lot to get an average rating of -3 on PH, so someone has to be really bad to get kicked off.

The real problem with Ubersite is the trolling. You know how that problem can be solved? IGNORE THE TROLLS. This is a bunch of bullshit. The way to beat the trolls is not to pack up and leave, because that's really what they want to see. The fact that it often seems that 80% of the posts on Ubersite are shit doesn't stop me from enjoying anything. I even enjoy the shit posts some of the time. A large part of what makes Ubersite great is that anybody can say anything and have a chance to be heard. It sounds like PulseHead is going to be a G-rated version of Ubersite, where only what its "government" deems acceptable may be seen. Fuck censorship.

The rating system here on Uber is FUCKED because of all the cliques and the "Oh, I'm going to give YOU a -2 because you gave ME one" shit. Ratings, for the most part, mean NOTHING. Like I told ole girl, Lojope... pay attention to the message that people try to convey- not to the NUMBER attached.

Good for you gascs, in the past you've done a lot for Uber and this website will be doing a service to all those people ,who more than anything want their writing to be read by a wide audience. They might already be posting on more sites than just Uber.
But personally, I'm more than likely staying here. This is my virtual 'home from home' & I like most of the people who come here.
As for the remarks that you are stealing users away, I think that is bullshit. If people were going to leave they would have done it by now. They might choose to belong to both websites. I would prefer a return to the days when there were less users on Uber, so gascs, if you make Uber less busy, I have no beef at all with that.

I am not worried about ubersite. I am angry because Gascs is ripping off Barts hard work and than posting about his rip off site on ubersite. If gascs can afford to make a rip off site and the time to make it then he should be able to take the extra time to find out people's email address and start emailing them. The genius behind this site is two-tiered. The draw, which is B@W, and the addictive/competitive community that has been able to form through... you guessed it, simplicity.
Gascs on the other hand is taking the base idea (simplicity), and moving in a specific direction with it. He is taking his own original and unique flavor and is adding it to see what he will get. What I see is a site that is aimed at creating quality writing and contribution with the competitive edge toned down. There is no B@W to pulsehead, there is no MVA, there is more freedom with the rating system... it is a site CATERED to people who have issues with this one.
What I was driving at with what I said to you is that just because you are using the same means, you are not necessarily trying to share the same vision with the world.

Holy Hell. I reviewed this an hour ago and since then it got 60 more reviews.
It is an idea. It is kind of thievery. As far as I know you never really asked Bart's permission to kind of "copy" his idea. You have almost the same layout, with only a few differences. The side menu's are almost all the same. The submission is probably the same, rating is very very slightly different.
Basically, it is a copy of ubersite. I agree that you shouldn't have posted on here that you made it, instead you should have waited for people to join it like Bart. People keep talking about how when tv broke out people copied each others ideas. I am sure thats true but when new networks formed they didn't advertise on the old networks. That, I think is wrong.
Perhaps you should make your site the long forgotten "Nubersite." Talk with Bart and see if you can get that site to filter out the people that completely blow at posting. Don't put up the rules on how to get over...just let it run itself.

The funny part is the shit people are trying to get away from here, is actually going to be much worse on pulsehead.
Everyday somebody bitches of some mysterious MVA Uber l33t Guild that -2s anybody they dont like, and +2 each other. the whole point of ubersite is the total random chaos of it. sure there are days when its total crap - but go look at the from page right now as in this instant. there are a lot of quality bits up there (including mine - go click on it, i gotta catch will zone and get off this damn #13 spot). the good stuff does usually rise to the top, sure sometimes shit does too, but thats just human experience in a nutshell isnt it. ubersite is just like the world in microcosm. some people get success through hard work and talent, others through the "old money" way, by being here longer than anyone, some others get success by being total fuckheads. to attempt to remove the poor elements is to attempt to remove the poor elements of humanity itself - all you are left with is a boring drone of an entity with no texture.

I haven't commented on this yet because it's under the "I'm not touching that with a ten-foot pole" category. However, I would just like to interject one piece I haven't seen yet in the replies that maybe nobody's thought about.
I know Bart has put tons of hours into this website and it's fucking awesome. The layout is great, the code is ALMOST perfect and so on and so on. Although he currently has the monopoly on sites like this, he certainly does NOT partake in monopolistic practices. He constantly monitors the site, rewards awesome posts, and tweaks things that have gone wrong. Hell, he even constantly works on additions that would make the site even better. Best of all, he makes us pay NOTHING FOR IT!
All that aside, however, I would like to point out that a little competition has never hurt. It usually makes things stronger. When the television was invented, they predicted the end of movie theaters. However, competition usually helps more when one of the sides is partaking in monopolistic practices (which Bart CERTAINLY is not). Also there is no money involved except that of the cost of Ubersite to Bart (for which I am very grateful).
So I see a few outcomes of this:
1. In order for there to be pure competition, Gascs needs to actually compete for space with Bart, meaning he would want to actually pull away users from Ubersite. This would mean that Gascs would not want to be active on Ubersite and Bart would not want to be active on PulseHead. Users could be members of both, but where they spend most of their time would be the real deal. Although Ubersite's popularity may take a minor hit, the popularity of Ubersite+PulseHead would probably go up.
2. Gascs continues this as an offshoot of Ubersite without Bart's permission, but Bart doesn't get a serious revenge thing going on. In this scenario, PulseHead WOULD, by definition, steal people's time away from Ubersite everytime they visit his site. This scenario is pretty much no different from the first except that there would be no official competition and rules by which the users would have to follow when dealing with each site. [as you might be able to tell, this scenario is the least developed of the three because I'm a fucking moron...please elaborate on this one...PLEASE!]
3. Gascs turns his site off until the day Bart turns to the dark side of not paying attention to Ubersite. I hate to hang a sword over Bart's head because he's been a very good webmaster for such a long time, but I guess it will be there.
Please don't take this as my condemning Bart or Gascs, I'm just trying to work out what's best for everybody.

If you look at the website it is similar in feel to the very old Uber. There is a most replied to list. There is a search function, a place to log in, a most recently viewed section. However, gone are the things such as MVA (in its place there is something called most popular, which I believe tabulates the total hits a user has had in the last seven days) and gone are the user IDs and allegiances from Uber. You could argue till you're blue in the face about what makes this site the same as Uber, but why not look at what makes it unique?

It is good to be proud of Uber. Very good. However, you can't look at that site as a direct attack on Ubersite itself! That would be impossible. Ubersite is what it is, and no other website will be able to emulate that.

I'd use it, but I see only one problem
I came to Übersite and learned how to write, quite quickly when I actually tried. I screwed off for about 8 months before I started putting a little effort in my writing. Since then, Uber has accepted me more and I don't post as often. When I do post, it gets all the attention that I desire of it.
If I ever posted something on pulsehead then it would have already been posted on Über. I find no reason to double post things unless I didn't get enough reviews or feedback, or if I got flamed for something that shouldn't have been flamed.
It's a good idea. It's nice to see that someone is doing something about it now rather than being pissed off and bitching. Good Job.

Gascs is not stealing anyone, either. In many ways, the situation on Uber is driving good users away. Uber is dismantling itself these days. If anything, Gascs is offering a place for these exiled people to go and contribute once more.
One of the biggest problems on Uber right now is that if you are not part of the external e-community of this site, you simply do not belong. Ratings have no meaning here, comments have no meaning here. Good posts have no meaning here. It has virtually become a real-time "teens 13-19" chat, and I am sick of it.

This is a WEBSITE is the biggest copout in the world and you know it.
That is an attempt to totally invalidate the fact that bart has put countless man hours into making this the best site he possibly can for a community of almost 10,000 people, and the fact that many members of the community have put a lot of effort into making it the best place they possibly can.
Whether you want to acknowledge it or not, behind every web page is a person (or in this case many people), and trying to take away Ubersite's users is just frickin' wrong.

i do aknowledge that behind every website is a person. and the person behind uber is pretty fuckin awesome. but to take just one of your points:

I've been here for four months, I'm not impervious to what Ubersite is or what has happened in the past. That comment sucks and you know it. It's an ID copout's what it is. I love Ubersite. Jer, I don't think that anyone who posts on Pulsehead will leave Uber unless there has been something to sour their experience. I plan on posting a few things on Pulsehead that got ignored on Uber. I don't think that I'll choose one over the other, but I'll probably spend the majority of time still on Uber.

pulsehead is an alternative. It's not a replacement. You can do both. If you want to boycott, go for it.
I did this as a service. I'm not trying to steal users from ubersite. I did it to give some people some of the things they've asked for.
If you want to get pissed off about somebody publishing a WEBSITE, so be it. Get pissed off. I apologize, that wasn't my aim.
However, if you're interested in the things I've changed, please, try it out.

This idea is total and complete shit.
For every good post put up on that other site, that is one less good post on Uber.
For every user that switches over, that is one less good user on Uber.
It's not fair to create an Ubersite-derivative website then come and try to recruit ubersite users for it. It's a slap in the face of everything bart has built here.
