The first time Emma kissed jay it wasn't anything like she had imagined. And she had imagined it a thousand times.
Emma had known Jay since they were three years old, when his family moved in across the street. His mother and hers had become close immediately.

Jay and Emma had gone from toddling around the yard in diapers, to walking to Grade School together, to sneaking out together when they were in High School.

If she thought back she could remember the moment she fell in love with him. They were ten years old and he had punched Billy Thompson in the face for pulling her hair. It seemed that was the point when he went from being her good friend to being that special someone she wrote in her diary about. Over the years her affection for him grew until they consumed her.

She had thought about telling him how she felt so many times. The scene in her head differed but the outcome was always the same. He would tell her that he felt the same and then finally after fifteen years of friendship they would share their first kiss.

Though Emma had built the moment up in her head it was never supposed to be this way. When Emma touched her lips it was as all the memories from all those years coursed through her brain. Their first day of school, the first time they smoked a cigarette, the first time they got drunk, and the subsequent week they spent grounded together. The memories kept coming, flooding her thoughts.

It was the day after their high school graduation. Jay was leaving for Boot camp in two weeks. Emma had asked him to take a drive with her. She was finally going to tell him how she felt. She was so nervous, she had taken a few shots to take the edge off her nerves. By the time she picked him up from work she was shaky and could hardly focus. Jay knew she had been drinking, he asked her to pull over, but she wouldn't. She just wanted to tell him to finally have her happy ever after.

Then the memories stopped. When she pulled away from him she watched the tear that crept slowly down his cheek. She wrapped his fingers around the rose she had been holding, and finally let go of the secret she had been holding for so long.
"I love you" she whispered. The tears were flowing freely now as she walked from his coffin and thought again that this wasn't the way it was supposed to be.

It is so foggy and general throughout the end's shock is lost to confusion.

Great story, I had to go back and read the last paragraph again because it shocked me so much.
