His eyes scanned over the pamphlet he received in the mail. "Come see the beautiful Grand Canyon" splashed across the page in bright red letters. He chucked the paper onto the coffee table, and drawing a puff from his cigarette, picked up the page containing the pictures of the Grand Canyon, with happy tourists and families smiling with the canyon sprawling behind them in the background.
"That's it," he said to himself, "that's how it's gonna be". He crumpled the sheet into a tight ball of shiny photo paper, slinging it towards the waste basket in the corner. Short. "Damn" he said to himself in mock dismay.
Knocking at the door. "Mark, hey, you in there??" Katie stood impatiently, tapping her foot on the concrete of the stoop. "Mark?"
He lays back on the couch, determined to ignore her until she leaves. He hears papers rattling, and the sound of a piece of paper slide under the door. He waits for the sound of her departing footsteps before he gets up to read the hastily scribbled note.
"Hey.. know you've been down lately.. please don't do anything stupid. I'm here if you need to talk, don't hesitate to call. -K."
"Yeah, now you give a fuck," he mutters to himself. 'Go to hell' he thinks. He leans down, picking up the pamphlet with the Grand Canyon information. He looks to his other hand with the note, crumples it, and takes another attempt at the basket.
"Figures" he said, as it hits the rim and comes to rest on the carpet. He leans down, picks up his .45, and heads for the door. Turning, he gives one last look to the apartment, turns back, and walks out, the door making a 'click' as it comes to a close.
