The rain kept pouring down over his body. Long rivers of bloodied water streamed down the concrete away from his face. The streetlight above flickered in the foggy air of Los Angeles; the city of angels some call it. Though tonight, he had begun to face some demons of his own. Deep inside his body, his heart beat again.

Several miles away, just up the street from the party in fact, his girlfriend picked up the phone. Dialed and waited while the static ringing pulsed in her ear. The rain had often caused problems with her phone, and more often than not, her cell phone would not work at her house. Ringing. No answer, just the voicemail message: 'Hi, you've reached my cell phone, leave a message and I will get back to you as soon as possible'. She left no message. She was angry. Why had he not called her yet, why was she stuck at home while he was out having a good time.

Under his soaking wet jeans, just below his belt, a familiar buzz, and the distant sound of a ring and vibrate. He heard it, or was he imagining it? The sound seemed so far away, miles off. It got louder, closer. A quiet roar. His eyes opened. The street light flickered above and turned off. Darkness fell around him. It was comforting somehow. His head hurt. His chest ached. What had just happened to him? Years of playing sports, never once had he had heart problems. Had it been a heart attack? Whatever it was, it was gone now, but it had changed something in him. He felt like he had died, and come back. A second chance at things; a chance to make wrongs right. He slowly tried to move. It hurt, but it was not that bad. Not as bad as the hurt he had caused around him. He had been hurting his friends and loved ones for a long time now. He had lied to them, all of them, especially her.

He slowly pushed up with his arms, raising his head from the ground. There was blood everywhere. He put his hand to his face and felt around. He could feel a lump above his right eyebrow. Centered on the lump was a gash, nothing a few stitches or a Band-Aid couldn't fix. He moved his hand down to his mouth. His bottom lip was swollen and hie could feel his broken teeth with his tongue. It did not matter. What mattered now was getting back to them and fixing things. He could make it better. He would start with them and go to her last.

Walking down the street, back towards the party, he was amazed at how far he had gotten. The rain kept coming, washing the blood from his clothing and hair. It felt good. He opened his mouth and caught some rain in his mouth. He made his way closer and closer to the party. It was quite out. Not a noise in the air, no cars, nothing. He turned the corner and made his way back towards the houses. There were no longer any people on the street. How long had be been gone? He pulled his cell phone from his pocket. The LCD on the outside said 1:26 am. Weird, he thought. Feels later.

He made his way to the front lawn of the houses. Empty. Not a soul in sight, the house lights: out. Nothing left but trash and bottles littering the lawn. Where were his friends? He pulled his cell phone out again. Flipping it open he realized that it had shorted out in the rain. Great, he thought, no way of getting a hold of them or her now. He had left his car back at his friend's apartment. Better get walking, he thought.

He made his way back to his car, finding it parked where he left it, but something was wrong. His back tire was flat. Well at least I have a place to sleep, he thought. He unlocked the door and got in. It had gotten colder. He could see his breath in his car. He pulled off his soaking jacket and wadded it up. He climbed into the back seat and stretched out as much as he could in the back of his '88 Honda hatchback. He put his head down, wincing as the zipper pressed into the cut on his forehead. His eyes drifted. Slowly closing. Sleep found him. In the morning he would fix things. Make everything better.

Blocks away, a phone rang. It was the police...
