I have said it on many occasions: There is no such thing as a war hero. No, I don't mean because people shouldn't idolize war, I just mean that no soldier in the past 300 years has ever done something as extravagant or heroic as the stories would make you believe.
When soldiers go off to war, 95% of their time they spend sitting around on temporary bases discussing the war. They do this to get their stories straight, as no soldier can go home without having some story that makes them more popular back home. The other 5% of the time, when they are actually faced with danger, they cower in bunkers, crying and shitting in their pants. Of course if nobody finds out, then it didn't happen. So instead of thinking of them cowering in trenches we now think of them being brave and shooting the enemy and completing missions, because they lie about what really happened. Ever hear some guy come back from war who refuses to tell war stories? This happens a lot, because some people aren't natural liars, so they just keep quiet and let other people's lies speak for them.
