Art is so deceptive! My thoughts race through an artist's possible intentions, and through conflict of dimentions, and vanishing points flying out, captivating my perception. What sort of mystic wonder is in a thousand sloppy brush strokes! What could this light, awkward, crooked and crawling smile say about the man who posessed it? Maybe, methinks, this man, trapped in a timeless portrait, wanted to smile, but couldn't quite bring himself to do so; the result: a toothless grin.
My mind is startled to attention by the echo of approaching footsteps in the gallery. A man, a stranger, appears beside me and joins me in quiet circumspection. After a moment's silence, as if shattering some invisibe barrier of impending uneasiness, I express my initial thought of the character in the piece.
"Looks like he wanted to smile, but couldn't." I manage to utter gruffly, clearing my voice quickly afterward.
This statement is followed with another short, agitating pause. Then, the stranger, after a look of cynical scrutiny, his hand lightly rubbing his chin, believing his own interpretation more precise, decides to offer a thought of his own.
"No, no, that's the face of a man who did not want to smile, but felt that he had to."
After a short, careful consideration of his words, the logical response occurs to me: "that's what I said."
The gallery sinks once again into silence.
