Two weekends ago my friend Rob and I decided to take a daytrip down to Alantic City. Now we are both in recovery. He has 50 days or so and I have 39 days. And that's right we went gambling at the casinos, Tah Mahal, Harrah's, The Borgata. We only brought $40 and some change. We limited ourselves being as we both have very addictive personalities. We had a lot of fun playing the nickel and quarter machines. We played Plinko, The Price Is Right and smoked about 20 cigarettes every hour.
We got kinda bored from playing games so we went for a walk down the boardwalk where all the casinos are. Let me tell you I have never seen so many crackheads before. Their home is the boardwalk. So we had fun making fun of all the crackheads. There was also a talent competition on the boardwalk so we sat down and made fun of all the people who couldn't sing for shit. It was a fun time of laughing at other people's weirdness. But trust me we needed it seeing as we couldn't drink, couldn't smoke a blunt and had run out of money to gamble.
Then we went to Hooters and compared all the waitresses asses and tits. Now if any of you know me personally, I have never gone to Hooters in my life and never would but I did. I have tried so many new things in recovery, it's so cool. Last weekend I even ate shrimp for the first time and liked it.
After our Hooters venture we went to The Borgata. It was kinda cool the way we got there. We didn't have any more money to take a cab so we walked across this field of mud. It was fun, but I kept tripping over my own feet and I wasn't even drunk. The Borgata is so awesome. The minute I walked thru those doors, I felt like going right to the bar and getting so sloshed. Rob of course stopped me. He always does. We were meeting his cousin and friends there. They brought Rob and I up to their awesome suite and persisted to show us the two schoolbags full of beer they had brought down and all the liquor in the mini-fridge. Rob and I stared at each other and left. We were pacing around and around the casino trying to find something to do because we felt we were both about to relapse.
So we sat on this column at the end of the casino. While we were sitting we saw some lady just plop right down and sit on the floor. Her friend and some security guard were trying to talk with her. Rob and I knew immediately what was wrong. She was so hammered and was becoming so hostile to her friend. Her friend took her by the shoulders and shoke her and said something like, "No Nancy, you are doing this to yourself." It was a real wake up call for Rob and I. We both turned to each other and were like, "so how many times did you do that to your friends when you were fucked up." So we left the scene and proceeded to pace some more.
So there we are standing in the middle of the casino hallway really edgy when some young guy comes up to us and says, "Here are two tickets to the Dylan concert. My friends couldn't make it so just take em for free." We looked at each other....awesome. The tickets were worth 200$. We were deciding if we should gamble it away. While we were deciding what to do, a couple came up to us and were like, "Here are two tickets for free so you two can sit together." Awesome. Now we had 4 free tickets to the Bob Dylan concert. We couldn't beleive it. We were so lucky.
We went to the concert. It was so much fun...you couldn't understand one word out of Bob's mouth but the music was great.

Now get this, Today I am in my AA midday meeting when who should walk in late, but the guy who gave us the free Bob Dylan Tickets. It's such a small world in recovery.

I am SO proud of you!

I know that we don't know eachother, but please know that I admire you so much for fighting this fight---and staying on the winning track.

I cannot pretend to know what you're going through, but I can only imagine the difficulty of it. Keep going, keep your music close to your heart, and have faith in yourself. We're all behind you 100%, Jo.

Jo,

I'd like to say a few things, from my heart. Firstly, 39 days is NO SMALL ACCOMPLISHMENT! I have been trying for about 6 years and haven't hit 39 days except for when I was locked up, so pat yourself on the back!

Secondly, your friend sounds great, but be wary... two people in early sobriety may lead each other astray. (maybe include someone else with a little more sober time to go along with you, when you hang out next time. trust me on this one, no matter what your good intentions are, addiction will shit on them)

From the little time I spent with you in AC, I realized how beautiful, yet pained a soul you are. YOU DESERVE THIS! You deserve happiness as much as anyone else, and I hope beyond all else that you will reach it, one day at a time.

Keep up the struggle, girl. There are more people than you know out here who care about you.

I am one of them.

Most Sincerely,

Michael

Not to be construed as an insult, but I've never "gotten" any of your posts.

Aw, Dad, you've done a lot of great things, but you're a very old man, and
old people are useless.
