Memories of Oregon Trail (on an Apple IIe) - the greatest game EVER CREATED (7764 hits)

Inspired by: http://www.ubersite.com/m/35959

The original Oregon Trail is by far the greatest game ever created. This is an indisputable & unquestionable fact.

"WOULD YOU LIKE TO BE A BANKER, FARMER, OR CARPENTER?"

My first memories of the original Oregon Trail game are from 4th grade's weekly "Friday Fun Day" in computer class. Yes, Monday through Thursday we slaved away on some type of "Mavis Beacon Teaches Typing" garbage all the while waiting and yearning for the precious 46 minutes of class time that would allow us to take a courageous and daring trip along the Oregon Trail.

"TOM HAS DIED OF DYSENTERY"

And I am not referring to the colorful follow up versions (I think I have seen a 5th edition now...), I am talking about the original, first-edition Oregon Trail game, played on an Apple IIe with the two-tone death-green monitor. I am taking about "loading a game" with floppy 5 1/4" disks that are actually floppy. If you have never heard of or seen a 5 1/4" floppy disk, keep enjoying your recently grown pubic hair and just read on, read on.

"WILL YOU ATTEMPT TO FORD THE RIVER?"

You know what the best part of this game was? Hunting. Damn it was fun. Doom, Quake, Half-Life please set aside and recognize your roots. You can go out and shoot the hell out of squirrels and bunnies but everyone once in a while get a deer or a buffalo. And what was the deal with only being able to carry 200 lbs. back to the wagon? What a pansy. Unfortunately all of your fat lazy kids are just hanging out at the wagon playing grab-ass with the oxen. Too bad there was never and option to "Give your wife/children something to cry about."

"YOU ARE AT CHIMNEY ROCK. WOULD YOU LIKE TO LOOK AROUND?"

If you have ever wanted to play this classic again, I found a site to download an Apple IIe emulator that runs on Windows. Once you have the emulator running you can download an Oregon Trail data file and load it into the emulator. This link will have both downloads. Enjoy:

Fear the awesome computing power of an Apple IIe:

It was either Oregon Trail or that stupid Turtle program where you learn to draw shapes by typing in rudimentary directional "codes".

Excellant.

The post was fairly good, but actually including a link to download this was pure genius. Thanks.

Thanks for the link, I was hoping someone'd post one *note:ulterior motives*
Woot! Oregon Trail! Kids today don't know what they're all missing. I think I'll write just a general nostalgia post, this Oregon Trail recollection has me all teary-eyed. But maybe that's just the reek of my neglected laundry. Curse you, ÜBER!

Hell, yea. But in my class there wasn't enough Oregon Trail Disks for everyone, so we had to work to get done first and get the disk, those were the fucking days man.

I was in the same type of computer class. We would type away all week and then play Oregon Trail on friday.

I remember at the end you could either take a safe route through the mountains or take a raft down the river. The raft part was awesome where you had to dodge the rocks. A whole 40 minutes of work could easily come crashing down from one rock. Awesome.

"Ford the river or hire a Ferry???...." I always lost my shit in the river.

Oh, and the end of the game where you float down the river and dodge the rocks, that kicked ass too.

I remember hunting with a friend, where he would walk around and I would just keep pushing the space bar as fast as I could until we ran out of bullets... Damn that game rules!

Ah, The Oregon Trail. The memories. We had the same sort of schedule when I was in elementary school.

Did anyone ever play Simon the Sorceror or the original Quest for Glory: So You Want to be a Hero? Those games were awesome.

Oregan Trail was great, but I was too little to play it well, all I ever did was start out and go hunting a lot. All my people usually died by the first river you had to cross.

dude... i used to give my cotrailers all the names of my friends; it was so sad when they died or were bitten by snakes or drowned or got diseases.

They really needed to nerf rabbits in that game. Those bastards were way to fast.
