Remember when Goth used to actually be a way of self-expression? Remember when everyone thought you were so radical by dressing all in black and being angsty about the entire world? Remember when Goths were actually halfway intelligent?
I was starting to go Goth for a while, thinking "yes. Show the world your icky, icky insides. It's what's on the inside that counts, right? Only in darkness are all things equal and all that. Yeah...Goth is the way to be because my life sucks." And it hit me. There are poor people in the world worse off than me and they don't think life sucks. Egads! The majority of Goths nowadays are doing it because of some band they like or because "everyone else is doing it". Goth has become a fad...
So, I put up this questionaire for Goths.
Why did you become Goth?:
a) The world is a hopeless place. By abstaining from getting involved in the world's politics, the few will rule over the many, but the many will be too involved in other things to notice. By showing the world how bleak and terrible everything is, through non-violent resistance, perhaps things will change.
b) I want to do drugs and look cool! Besides, all my friends are doing it.
What is the meaning of life?:
a) There is no meaning. We are but pawns of a greater force as we float through this bioluminescent stew known as the universe.
b) Ummm....boys/girls?
How many of your friends are Goth?:
a) It doesn't matter how many of my friends are Goth. They accept me for me and I accept them for them. To conform is to be deluded into thinking that everything is allright, that drifting from place to place because that's where the majority is is a life-fulfilling quest. To conform is to discriminate against those who dress differently. To not conform is to accept them all, regardless of clique.
b) All of them! And if you're not Goth, you can't be my friend!
And so forth. I originally posted this on my now-defunct website. Sadly, so many people chose B for all of them. (The original had 25 questions)
Anyway, I'm just wondering why being "non-conformist" is so mainstream now. Isn't it a paradox? To be a non-conformist, you must conform. Hrmmmm....

i know a couple "goth" people and i've met mentor's so-called true-goth friends, and i must say that they really scare the hell out of me. not only that but they really are intelligent and wholesome people. not to mention carl =)

I read up to: "Remember when Goth" OK, i read the entire thing.
"Remember when Goths were actually halfway intelligent?" Nope, I sure don't. They have always been whiny little suburban white kids who think they are "not fitting into a group" by "fitting into a group"
The first 3 goths ever might have been intelligent. I'll give you up to 10 goths. The first 10 goths might have been intelligent. After that, they were a group. And being a goth because "you didn't want to conform to society's standards" so you join a GROUP of SOCIETY is retarded.

I have a lot of true-Goth friends as well as "Goth" friends.
I'm border-line Goth. I'm interested in the occult, and I like to wear black. Why? I look good in black! Black looks good with everything! I play in a lot of vampire LARPs--my biggest bit of Goth culture. But I don't sleep in a coffin.
