How the hell did it come around?
I remeber when a couple of years ago it was the baby-talk that everyone used on-line (yew ish so keewt bebe). And now, its numbers and signs. What the hell happened in this 2 year span?
Argh, yes I know, another short post, but. I just wanted to know what the hell this 1337 or leet or l33t shit is.

Yeah, as someone said before, "leet" typing started in online games, where people valiantly attempt to run, shoot, and type all at the same time. So, to insult other people shortcuts were used. leet instead of elite. There was also the common abbreviations, wtf, lmao, etc. Those are pretty standard. And let's not forget the hilarious typos. teh instead of the.
And somehow all of that degenerated into replacing letters with numbers, which takes even longer than spelling correctly.

Scroll down and read my previous response. It didn't start with games, it was adopted by games.
MMORPGs (massive multiplayer online role playing games) were the descendants of MUDs (multi-user dimensions), which were entirely text-based. MUDs were not saturated with "leet speak" and abbreviations, because they required lots of reading, and so idiots were less likely to play. Also, they were only available to computer geeks when they were most popular, because back then (late eighties to early nineties), those were the only people who had computers.
The first computer geeks did not use leet speak. Why? Because it's dumb. Crackers used it briefly as a means to an end, and then it quickly became shunned as the first of many things to be bastardized and worn-out on the internet (read: all your yatta are belong to goatse).

Nope, it started as a way for hackers and crackers to get around internet sniffers that looked for certain dictionary words. People quickly realized that a polymorphic engine to determine substituted characters would be simple to implement, and the idea of "leet speak" soon became associated with "script kiddies", or children who exploited flaws in computer security using tools written by more knowledgable people.
And of course, as with anything totally lame, a bunch of ignorant kids picked it up and started pretending it was cool in hopes of turning it into individualism somehow.
Oh, and -2 because this post had no decent content. This is not a Question and Answer forum, or even a discussion forum (at least not primarily). Post USEFUL things, please.
