I get that the whole trend now is to be stick thin. I may not agree with it, but I can accept it, until now.
The other day I went with my sister to the local department store, Gottchalks (sp?) to get her husband some flip-flops. As we cruise through the store we pass by the juniors sections and decided to take a quick detour. As she lazily flips though pastels and logoed shirts, I find myself in the swimsuit isle. I let my hand graze across the suits lazily and as I turn my head to look at a suit, something catches my attention from the corner of my eye. As anyone would do I turned my head to see what caught my attention, it had been a neon green 2-piece, and my mouth dropped. Not at the swimsuit, but at the mannequin. Normally one doesn't pay attention to these headless lifeless figures, but today I did.
Her arms were placed at her hips and right below the top piece, her ribs were rutting out of her hardened flesh, and the bottom piece was just low enough to see her hip bones jutting from her, well hips. I was in complete dismay, they had taken stick thin actresses and model to a whole new level, dying mannequins. If this doesn't seem a little out there, then I guess the cheese stands alone.

sure netprophet keep passing the blame around. i know they get influenced by others, but dammit if kids were taught to be themselves and have self respect and dignity, shit like this might be avoided.
Hell I didn't give in to peer pressure, but maybe that is becasue I am smarter and more self-confidant? Hell, I think we should blame everybody but ourselves.

Yes the mannequin is stupid, but if parents would talk to their kids, and if women weren't fucking idiots then we woudn't have these problems. Hell I am sure tv is to blame too, not the stupid teen who pukes up her lunch after eating it.

Okay, you're dumb. Teenagers are more influenced by peers, society, and the media than anything else, period. If starving to death is cool, they'll do it, and that doesn't make them stupid- it makes them human.
Their desire to injure themselves to fit in is as natural as your desire to badmouth them ignorantly to fit in.
Oh, and to all of you who keep giving confused shit... well, at least she's trying. This wasn't a top-notch (read: written by envenom, JMG or CBG) post, but it was logical and well thought-out.

I'm not sure why so many woman want to be so thin. Now I'm not going to say I don't want to be thinner, but not that thin. The thing that baffles me so much is that men don't have to go through the same type of sterotyping. Men are found attractive in all sizes, but a woman over 120 is a little heffe.
But what it all comes down it is the media. People try to say it is your upbringing, but it isn't. My mother is an obese woman, and my dad was a bigger guy. Four children, 2 skinny, 2 fat. The two that are skinny are more media-oriented (is that even a word?) then the heavier too.
Shit... I don't know where I'm going anymore.
But I do want Bart to comment on my post again.

Personally, I like a corn-fed girl. Not fat (oh god no), but not anorexic either. This wasn't bad for a first post. not bad at all. I think thats why alot of good writers leave ubersite. A thirteen year old girl writing about how her spiked necklace got her a detention at school gets the same ratings as someone who writes about how a mannequin makes her throw up (sarcasm).
