Farenheit 9/11: All heat, no light (1021 hits)

I just saw Farenheit 9/11, and I must say it is the worst film I have seen in a long time. Reasonable arguments against the war in Iraq exist -- but this unbalanced screed displays none of them.

It's hard to imagine that, even in the surreal confines of Cannes, Michael Moore's Fahrenheit 9/11 was considered a good film. Fahrenheit received the film festival's top prize, and the big loser was Cannes' credibility.

Fahrenheit 9/11 is disgusting, pathetic propaganda without the slightest shred of integrity. Reasonable arguments against the war in Iraq exist -- but this unbalanced screed displays none of them.

Mr. Moore and his supporters seem to think that the filmmaker's freewheeling style exempts him from every standard of objectivity. One example: In making the claim that the U.S. invasion of Afghanistan was completely ineffective (he might have, by the way, asked a few Afghans their opinion), Mr. Moore states that Osama bin Laden and "most of the Taliban" escaped the country. The image on screen is of a bunch of dark-skinned men piled on top of a tank, which is squealing around a corner on a dusty street. The audience doesn't know where this shot is from, who's on the tank, or where they're going. Mr. Moore cites no statistics to prove his point. Instead, he means for his audience to take his words at face value.

That may sound like a minor point, but this is Mr. Moore's technique throughout the film: Make ridiculous, vague assertions, then toss an out-of-context image on screen to bolster the argument on an emotional, not rational, level. Here's another: When discussing the supposed lack of a threat posed by Iraq, the country is portrayed as a place of sunlight and smiles, with kids on bicycles and happy women (women!) shopping. When was the footage taken? Where was it taken? Is it at all representative of conditions in the country before the war? Mr. Moore couldn't care less.

With that attitude, how can he expect his audience to take him seriously?

Michael Moore is offering 10,000 dollars to anyone who can find incorrect facts or misleading evidence in the movie. Give him a call if the movie is so false!

Although I hate Michael Moore, I wouldn't have a problem with his films if he didn't try to pass them off as documentaries. They aren't. They are fiction and shouldn't be falsely labeled as documentaries, because it is deceptive.

This post kinda sucked, but hey, at least I know what you're trying to say here.

Don't expect something that blasts Michael Moore to ever get a good rating on this site, no matter how many times you prove that his movies are such highly edited pieces of crap and distortions of any sort of truth whatsoever, people here seem to love that douche.

No matter what though, you gotta admit the guy has talent.
Moore can oustrip Goebells any day of the week.
God bless that stupid fatass.

"worst film I have seen in a long time"... either you don't see many fucking movies or your cinematic taste is as bad as your warped politics.

First of all, Michael Moore is a polemicist, not a news-anchor, meaning his arguments are often hyperbolic. We all know that going in. I don't always like everything he throws in the movie, but it takes no more than a 8th grade education to separate the underlying arguments (Bush is a retard, war has nothing to do with Iraqi freedom, etc.) from the satire. For example, when he superimposed the face of Bush on Lorne Greene's, I didn't actually believe it was a real clip from Bonanza.

I'm not sure which facts you are disputing and/or calling ridiculous. With regard to Afghanistan, maybe Moore was basing his depiction of Afghanistan sliding towards chaos after our invasion on this BBC report of the same name http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/south_asia/3179474.stm , or the point that most of the Taliban escaped from any one of the thousand articles on the subject including this one: http://www.cooperativeresearch.org/timeline/main/escapeafghanistan.html. Maybe Moore was giving his audience credit for paying enough attention to the world on their own that he only need make the larger points. He must not have accounted for you and your steadfast refusal to accept reality.

With regard to the shots of Iraq prior to the bombing, they actually are real pictures of Baghdad from several months prior to the war. Were several good pictures cobbled together to contrast the extreme violence and fear of an aerial bombing in major metropolitan area? Yes. Was it propagandistic? Mildly. But most of us also assumed that Moore did not intend those pictures to define every facet of life in the country. This may be a shock to you, but it is actually very sunny in Iraq (see any atlas), and contrary to popular belief, kites and bicycles were not against the law. Whatever the situation was really like, I can guarantee you that it was significantly more pleasant than the disneyesque experience that is "shock and awe". Although according to many reports the kids do like to play with as-yet undetonated cluster bombs.

You felt the need to say (several times?) that:

"Reasonable arguments against the war in Iraq exist -- but this unbalanced screed displays none of them."

Please indulge me and tell me what you think those secret reasonable arguments are.

I'd have to side with Moore on this one.
Generally when someone like him makes a move such as this, they do a bit of background research to verify their assertions.

+1 because I don't think it should have won at Cannes either. It wasn't THAT good.

The war in Afghanistan is bullshit,
The War in Iraq is bullshit,
The War on drugs is bullshit, and....
The War on Terror is bullshit.

Oh and your post too, is bullshit.

You could make the claim that Moore is being too hard on Bush, that bush is doing nothing but continuing the already set trend for American foreign policy (destabilizing most of the world through bullshit wars, state sponsored terrorism, crippling sanctions, blaa blaa blaa, so American corporations can move in and monopolize the hell out of everything). That Moore is just picking on Bush because his adminstration is dumb enough or gutsy enough to expose to the world the true face of American foreign policy. That this empire building was not started by Bush just continued and the blame should be dolled out fairly between Democrats and Republicans. If that was the basis for your argument then you would be correct, but it wasn't, you just use the same nonsensical arguments most Bush supporters use.

"I saw Michael Moore wearing a Made in Canada hat during some interview a few weeks ago, who is he trying to kid? That hate was made in Korea! Another one of Moore's lies exposed, Moore hates America rooaarrrr whine, sniff"

Thank fucking god that there are people like Moore willing to make a documentary like this, the plastic smiled pompous Whitehouse cheerleaders (or media) do nothing but puke up Whitehouse rhetoric and sound bites all day while elite worshiping people like you get down on all fours and lap it up like obedient little dogs, oblivious to any really issues or events around the world while at the same time pulling out your hair over red herrings like gay marriage (seriously who gives a fuck).

I don't care about the FACTS, I don't care about the footage, I care about the overall message: GET BUSH AND HIS CLOWNS OUTTA THE WHITE HOUSE!

I hate it when people criticize him. I just hate them so much. I would punch one in the face if I ever met someone who criticized his work, and luckily I haven't met anyone like that. When I saw that tank free-wheeling around the corner, I knew that they were just on business, but Moore's secret meaning is that the U.S invaded Afghanistan to start a momentum of acceptance of war. Fuck you.

I got a question for all those who criticize Moore: do you want Bush to be re-elected? You can't just take neutral ground.

Michael Moore never claimed he was making an objective documentary. In fact, the only thing he's said on the subject was this: "I have an opinion, and I've assembled the facts and juxtaposed them in such a way to support that opinion."

This is true. Most of Moore's movies have very few "facts" and are just basically his opinions and he does not allow anyone to argue any of this. One example in bowling for columbine, the NRA held a convention nearby a month later, moore used a clip of Heston waving a gun around "supposedly" at that convention but it turns out that he used a clip from earlier that year. So it made it appear the NRA were heartless savages. As for the -2's on this post....you can see they are typical liberal meatheads who don't want to hear the facts but if it is negative about bush, america, republicans they agree 100%.

I hear what your saying but one flaw mate. Women in Iraw were treated reasonably fairly. It was a secular state and as such did not have the draconian laws against women that were the norm in Afghanistan.
