My every post so far turned out to be a pile of shit, but I aim to please. Sooo....
This is one of those pissed off posts written in the middle of the night, but something has been bothering me lately. And I had been thinking about the issue for quite a while now.
So here is seven words for you..
Pride
Avarice
Lust
Envy
Gluttony
Rage
Indolence
Seven mortal sin listed in the Bible. Pride is number one. The worst sin of all. All the other sins grow from pride.
But why do people use the word "pride" some much these days?
"I am proud of my football team"
"I am proud of my hard work"
"I am proud of being such an upstading citizen"
"I am proud to BE AN AMERICAN"
Jesus F. Christ, you have found a right thing to be proud of!! You were BORN in this country, you did NOTHING to become an american (unless you are an immigrant). And therefore there is NOTHING you should be proud of. Am I wrong? Hell, I am proud that I have black hair. That makes as much goddamn sense as saying I am proud to be an American.
But thats really besides the point. I mean what is wrong with people around me. And most of them are BELIEVERS, which I am not by the way. But if we go by the bible, shouldn't people be more HUMBLE?
Maybe it should be: "I am HAPPY to be an American", "I am HAPPY to have graduated from college", "I am HAPPY that God made me and I work so freaking hard" ???
Am I right or am I right? Next time you say you are proud, remember you are burning in hell for this.

If tomorrow all the things were gone I'd worked for all my life,
And I had to start again with just my children and my wife.
I'd thank my lucky stars to be living here today,
'Cause the flag still stands for freedom and they can't take that away.
And I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I'd gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.
From the lakes of Minnesota, to the hills of Tennessee,
across the plains of Texas, from sea to shining sea,
From Detroit down to Houston and New York to LA,
Well, there's pride in every American heart,
and it's time to stand and say:
I'm proud to be an American where at least I know I'm free.
And I won't forget the men who died, who gave that right to me.
And I'd gladly stand up next to you and defend her still today.
'Cause there ain't no doubt I love this land God bless the U.S.A.

bicklefragile --- Although the Catholic Church has had a very spotted history, it must be remembered that not only has the Church created a massive amount of theology, but that it is the single largest Christian church in the world and therefore could be seen as truly "The Church". In respect to the best representation of the Church of God, as described as the collective Christian mind of man. This carries immense responsibility and wields tremendous power, yes, but as can be seen in the surveyed backgrounds of Catholics...they truly represent a tremendous diversity in backgrounds, values, politics, etc. In fact, one can take a cross section of regional membership and almost see a paradox to the average as a whole, on most subjects.
I'm not sure what they're teaching kids these days on how things where in the old days, but you might be surprised to understand how things unfolded comparatively to pagan tradition. I'm with you on taking up many issues with the "Church" as a whole, all organized attempts of congregation for that matter. But one shouldn't let that get in the way of understanding.

just as a point, where in the bible are the seven deadly sins listed? I was under the impression that that list was an invention of the Catholic church, much like the Seven virtues no one ever talks about. From what I've read It was a way of dumbing down the Bible for the massively ignorant peoples of the middle ages that the church controlled like sheep.
Correct me if I'm wrong.

Although there is to be no order of severity between the seven deadly sins, pride (in its biblical context) is the sin, which is to be of tremendous importance. What was the first creation of God to find pride (of any sort)? How did that pride lead to rebellion, rebellion lead to conflict, conflict lead to destruction, and destruction lead to the curse of the earth? In this modal, pride is most likely responsible for the evils of many men. If you believe in that sort of thing.
Understand what it is I'm saying? What the "biblical context" is meant to be?

Its reasonably well thaught out but there is a differnece between being proud of your achievements and being proud of, as you say, being american. You put these two together and then explained that the american line correctly as wrongfull pride, which was correct but the others in the same list werent all equel use of the word. Am I makeing sense? that you listed four things but the one you expanded on was the only one of them which what you were saying was correct?
Blegh, hate it when I cant articluate subtle language differences.

Out of context or not. Pride is pride. Pride is jumping on a band wagon. Pride is taking what is not yours.

Nice try. You get a +1 for effort. You are taking the meaning of the word way out of context though. You need to understand the original meaning of pride. The biblical meaning. I am not qualified to explain it to you, but the way you are using it is not the way it was originally was intended.
I understand (I think) what you are trying to say though.
