My bed smells like teenage sweat. The smell permeates the pillows and saturates the sheets. Whatever fresh, summery, childlike scent this bed used to give off is now a musky, humid bouquet. I know what goes on here, so it doesn't phase me as much as it would a stranger. A stranger could walk into my room, feel the moist, trapped air, smell the panting dog aroma and assemble a few theories as to what goes on here. As image of two bodies, locked tightly onto one another. The naked souls panting and perspiring as they wrestle and kiss. When the frolicking ends, they would collapse, spent, onto the bed. Their glistening bodies melting into the bed in perfect relaxation.
A stranger doesn't know what goes on in this bed.
I do.
I know that a teenage boy spends too many hours sleeping in this bed. His matted hair and wet brow sunk deep into the pillow, dreaming of a stranger's theory.
I know that a teenage boy lies awake some nights until the sun comes through his window and the birds start chirping. It's so sticky that he is often compelled to give in to light and the birds' provocking and rise to write mediocre prose; his morning masterpiece is then judged and reviewed by faceless peers and ambiguous allies.
I know that a teenage boy and his girlfriend's body often lock together. They occasionally pant and perpire as they wrestle and kiss. Their souls aren't naked though, their souls are wearing underwear and socks. Their sweat is stifled before it sinks into the bed. Their wet frames exude the product of diaphoresis, but not subdued calm. The teenage boy is not in a state of perfect relaxation. He is in a state of contemplation.
I know that a teenage boy that is seriously considering washing his sheets today.
