1. RADIOHEAD - best band of all time; revolutionaries in music.. best live act
(seen'em 3x in the past 18 months)
2. BEATLES - most famous band of all time.. but radiohead will surpass them
3. THE STROKES - great simple rock; as eddie van halen said, the best guitar solos are the ones you can humm along to.
4. THE WHITE STRIPES - great singer/guiatarist/songwriter ; 2 man band too.
5. NIRVANA - how many other bands can say they created a genre of music?
6. 311 - great, orignal style; amazing drummer
7. DOVES - love UK Music; great guitar and effects
8. OASIS - not as good as they were, but they still rock live
9. MATTHEW GOOD BAND - older stuff was better, but talented, orignal artists.
10. SILVERCHAIR - daniel jons' great lyricist, amazing voice; prob. best singer, leadguitarist in any band

Good list but I can't believe not one person has said Marilyn Manson! Here's my list (in no particular order, except manson):
1. Marilyn Manson
2. Radiohead
3. White Stripes
4. NIN
5. System of a Down (except for the newest new stuff)
6. Garbage (another on no one has said)
7. Deftones
8. Weezer (really makes you feel good to just sit back and listen to stuff like "In the Garage")
9. HIM
10. Tool and A Perfect Circle

Alright, that says "Bands That Rock", not necessarily "My Favorite Bands", although there is some overlap between the two categories. Without further ado, and in no particular order:
The Clash
Supersuckers
AC/DC
Zeke
Led Zeppelin
Motorhead
Dillinger 4
Black Flag
Melvins
Rocket From The Crypt
Oh yeah, 3manweave, the members of about half the bands you listed all claim AC/DC as being a major influence on them.
TheReasonWhy: When the White Stripes perform, 9 times out of 10 it is indeed just the two of them on stage.

First of all:
1)RADIOHEAD - while a good band, by far not the best band ever; all they have done is mix pop-rock with some weird timings (mostly 7/8) and eerie sounds
2)WHITE STRIPES - not a two-man band; Meg is a girl, and I think they would need about 8 people on stage to pull all that stuff off
3)NIRVANA - please
4)SILVERCHAIR - the reason you get a +1; Danny Johns is incredible

i bet you guys are gettin tired of seeing me review this post huh? but regarding mr. metallica fan over there, they're good, but overrated, Megadeth is much better. and i might as well post my top 10 bands:
1. Led Zeppelin (you don't get any better than the Zep)
2. Megadeth (much better than metallica)
3. Beastie Boys (i must admit they are not overrated)
4. Powerman 5,000 (their singer has one of the greatest and most unique voice I've ever heard)
5. AC/DC (who doesn't love ACDC?)
6. Anthrax (most underrated band ever)
7. Queen (c'mon, you know you like bohemian raphsody)
8. Jimi Hendrix (i'm gettin tired of saying stuff about each and everyone of these)
9. Van Halen (i'm guessing you're all tired of reading things too)
10. The Who (well, that's 10)

You're right actually Mick, a lot of seriously good stuff has been forgotten in the glory of supposedly "seminal" new bands like the Strokes/Vines/etc. I don't mind either of these, but they're never going to be played in 30 years like the Byrds, the Stones, etc. are now. I think the White Stripes may make it into long-term rock history, however. They seem to have a certain extra something. They do when I hear them, anyway - I can't not turn them up.
Bands like the Floyd (I saw them live about 8 years ago and they were unbelievable), the Stones, The Doors, all that sort of stuff - I'm so glad I turned out an indie kid and not a raver. I'm 27 in a few weeks but my musical tastes reach back to before I was born. Put on LA Woman, wait for "Riders on the Storm", and prepare to cry...

No I did not read all the responses, way too lazy, so if I list bands that are already here...deal with it amigos.
I'll have to add:
Steve Miller Band
Sublime
Tool
Sever The Stars (http://stskillsit.cjb.com) - Gotta plug my friend's new band haha
Rage Against The Machine
Dream Theater (probably some of the most talented musicians around)
I know there are more I could list, but I'm tired and burnt out from last night. Peace for now folks.

and even more concerned that Sublime was not listed, given they were more current.

+2 just for having the Doves in there. Trust me people - go get stoned off your box, put "The Last Broadcast" on nice and loud, turn out the lights, then come back here tomorrow and tell me it wasn't one of the most amazing moments of your life. First time I heard it, just like that, I thought I'd died. Fucking incredible, moving, touching stuff.

4) Led Zeppelin (oh MAN these guys rule)
5) Pink Floyd (again! rule!)
6) Radiohead (they rock my world. am i the only one that loved "hail to the theif"?)
7) Chemical Brothers
8) Jethro Tull
9) Nine Inch Nails (reeeally got me thru a LOT of tough times. i love me some industrial music)
10) Timo Maas (yes, there is a group behind him)
these are not in order. oh well.

By the way D_D you fucking imptard canuck...
Oasis is SHIT. they had one or two mediocre top 40 hits. Not to mention the Gallaghers are some of the most unfoundingly arrogant and unprofessional people ever to be in the public eye.
As far as radiohead. I will admit that they are a very innovative and impressive band. Though nothing they have done recently is all that great on the whole. As far as them surpassing the Beatles?? umm no. That wont happen. The beatles were unbelievably popular well in to the 70's and even re-release of remasterd Beatles Music go triple platinum...
Figures D_D would talk out his ass like always...

The strokes?? THey are going to fade away like every other dirt punk band before them...
I like the White stripes but they are no where near the quality of 311
And I could smack you for putting Silverchair up here... THEY SUCK they havent had a song that was worth listening to period. And best lyricist??? please... lets see some of these compelling lyrics...
"No more maybes
Your baby's got rabies
Sitting on a ball
In the middle of the Andes"
WHoa... that's deep man...
Funny these punk asses sing about seemingly profound things... and they were like 16 when they came out...
It is official. You are a total and complete moron.

how can you say Nirvana started a genre, they popularized somethign that had been going on for years, i.e. meat puppets, the posies, the pixies, hell, even soundgarden was older. They did popularize it, but two of their biggest songs, were meat puppet covers. Silver chair is a joke, I am sorry, but screaming fat boy and apologizing for another day, their stuff sounds like it was written by junior high schoolers, which is understandable, because pure massacre was written when he was twelve. That is ok, it is your opinion, I just disagree. Nothing against you. I think the all time greatest band is the refreshments, probably impacted my life more than anyone. They have very intelligent lyrics. Sublime is great, I love Aerosmith even though I will get flack because they are not punk rock, but who cares. Foo Fighters rules, I do love radiohead. Hum, sunnyday, NOFX, Dead Eye Dick, and a lot more.

I don't necessarily believe that having an MC makes you hip-hop. Slipknot certainly isn't hip-hop; they have an MC. 311 has a HUGE hip-hop influence. Even more than reggae or punk. Listen to the beats (I'm sure you have) - straight up hip-hop. That's what I'm talking about. Not to mention that they rap over those beats at times. Of course there's reggae, punk and hardcore in there, 311 does a great job of combining all that. But to say they're "nowhere near" hip-hop is just wrong.

I agree with perhaps half of those. I haven't heard much from the Strokes, but from what I have heard I don't really understand what all the buzz is about. They sound okay but doesn't really seem as original and amazing as a lot of people say. I have heard that the lead singer was a child actor (the little kid in 'Big'). Somehow this takes away from their credibility- it seems like they probably had a lot going for them and didn't have to pay dues. Rock and roll is all about paying dues.
But it's also really about the music, so I suppose whose playing it doesn't really matter. They don't blow my hair back, but I should probably hear more of their stuff before saying they're bad.
I feel the same way about the White Stripes. I'm in love with the drummer, and can't seem to get past that.
I do enjoy the Radiohead. Thom Yorke makes me weep.
So, yeah. I believe you've made a good list. If I were to make a list it would look very similar. I'd have added Tool and Beastie Boys I think. It still bothers me that newer "hip" bands like the White Stripes and the Strokes got the nod instead of great rock bands like Guns and Roses and the Who, however.
