Britain must "reclaim the flag" from racist far-right extremists,
A news headline about the British Home Sec telling us we need to ensure the Union Jack and the Cross of Saint George are not highjacked by the Far right,
One word about Mr Blunket!! "TWAT" errrrrr wake the fuck up how many years have we had to be told by local Gov, to not display our national flag incase it upsets the Minorirties?
Well I'll tell you "WAY TO FUCKING LONG"
can we fucking stop with conservertive, middle class (for the benifit of our US cousins) Soccer mum's(should be football but i'll let it slide this once) (note correct spelling of Mum) softly softly policies and PR bullshit

Ixnayer...
the problem with the confederate flag is that it IS a symbol for racism.
Not because everyone who likes the flag thinks of it as a racist symbol, but because many of those who are racist DO use it as a symbol.
Regardless of a symbol's original meaning, it can be perverted in the "public eye" to the point where there's really no going back no matter how innocently some people may want to use it because it stands for something different to them.
I'll give you an example. If I said that I was Hopi Indian (I'm not, but anyway) and that I wanted to hang a flag in my window proudly displaying the Hopi Symbol of Life which has stood for the balance and harmony of all things in nature for longer than my people could remember, what would you say?
You'd probably be all for it wouldn't you? Go ahead and display that symbol with pride... but wait.
It's a swastika. The Nazis stole the Hopi Symbol of Life and used it because they had an obsession with the occult (Indiana Jones, anyone?). I guarantee you there's not a person alive who has a brain in their head that displays that symbol proudly in their window, no matter what it means to them personally.
Unfortunately, like it or not, symbols can take on a negative meaning in the public eye regardless of what it may be "supposed" to mean.

wow.. i just went to the National Front website in the UK.
http://www.natfront.com/
for those of you who havent, read the parts about "prejudice" and "race". what a bunch of sickos..
i cant believe anyone would support such a party.
this is an actual quote: "We argue, for example, that West Indian and other Negroes will never fit in, as multiracialists claim, to become equal and integrated members of a predominantly White society. This is because they are inherently unfitted to do so intellectually...."

The confederate flag is not a sign of racism, nor should any flag be, it is a small group of people who use it that way. During the Civil War here in America, men died under the Confederate flag because they believed in what they were fighting for. While I don't agree with what they we're trying to get, I will respect someone who fights for their country/government and dies under their flag. Some people do use the Confederate flag for racist purposes, but the great majority don't, but it just shows you how a small group of people can do something and change the views of people.
Before this post, I never knew Englad had a problem like that. Very interesting and very intriguing. Good post.

Over hear in the states, its not the Stars and Stripes that usually causes the problems. US Flags are all over the place, even more so after last September. Any minority group that came out against showing the US flag in any way shape or form probably would see most of their support and respect vanish quicker than MCI Worldcom's stock price.
What flag we DO have problems with is the old Confederate flag (coindicently, it bears a close resemblance to the Union Flag). Down south, the ol' southern crusties want to fly that thing as a sign of their "southern pride". Problem is, the flag is also a symbol of violent racism and slavery (which may actually be southern pride anyways). If you show many people the "stars and bars" and they immediatly associate it with the Ku Klux Klan.

In the USA, you often see people displaying the star spangled banner outside their homes. I live in a culturally diverse area of England and so I would not display the St George's Cross or the Union Flag outside my home because of the National Front connotations. I would be worried about receiving a brick through my window.
I think that this is a huge shame, as I am an Englishman and proud of it. However I have an open mind to other cultures and do not believe I am a racist. Over here though any show of patriotism is often confused with nationalism.
