I was sitting here drinking a beer, thinking of all the things I've done in this life. Not huge groundbreaking heroic acts of selflessness. I haven't done any of those. Not all the incredibly smart choices that have driven my life toward a better course. I haven't made many of those either.

I'm talking about all the little things that we do in life, the things that really don't matter to anyone but ourselves. All the times we've opened our checkbook. All the times we have slumped down on a couch. Everytime we sat down on a cold toilet seat. Clicking the button on the mouse, pulling a cup out of the cupboard, musing about other places and things, smiling when we're alone, flipping through the channels, throwing away an empty water bottle, sneering at the boss while their back is turned.

All these actions, feelings, thoughts, desires, they are monumentally trivial. But to us, they are incredibly important. They are important because they are a part of who we are. They are the things we have done, big or small, great or not. I know getting a glass of water is something you have done so many times, since you were able to get glasses of water by yourself, but if you stop and try to remember a specific instance...Maybe, you'll know how I feel.

I have been sitting here putting together as many memories of myself as possible. I have sat, enveloped in musics of my past, and remembered a day when I was cutting grass. There was nothing particularly special about that day, no one died, or was born, or was elected, or was anything. No towers were attacked, no countries went to war, no holidays were observed. I merely woke up that morning, got dressed, and went outside to cut the backyard. I had to fill the mower with gas halfway through, and as I did, the sweat from my arms and face felt cool in a gentle breeze that was passing by. The air, it smelled like cut grass and mower exhaust. A line of ants was travelling up and down the corner of the house. Flies were buzzing around, bothering the hell out of me. It was like any other day. Nothing out of the ordinary occured. But all the same, that day has come to be signifigant to me, like all the other days I can remember if I try.

Like it or not, everyone takes life for granted. That phrase has become so cliche'd that it is almost worthless to try to relate. But all the days, all the things, all the memories you have locked inside you, they are great, no matter what they are, they are proof that you are alive and awake, and proof that you feel, and see and smell and taste and hear and experience.

Days from now, months from now, years from now, decades from now, we will have died, turned to nothing and become one with everything. Our memories will perish along withus. No one can recall our memories. Bathing in the glory that is our stupid little trivial, materialistic lives is all we have.

It is so difficult to tell you what I mean. I am not using any drugs, besides this second beer I'm drinking, and I'm not some crazy new age hippie or bible thumper. All I'm saying is that life in all it's complexities is such an awesome and satisfying thing to behold, it's a shame we don't take more time out of our modern lives to enjoy it, remember it, and be fulfilled by it.

Thanks for reading.

True dat.

Second class? What about Social Security, bus discounts, Medic-Alert
jewelery, Gold Bond powder, pants all the way up to your armpits, and
all those other senior perks? Oh, if you ask me, old folks have it
pretty sweet.
