Has anyone else noticed here that it seems as if uberboard
has acquired some real advertisements about stupid free
internet bullshit?

And this may be completely off-topic but I just got a pop-up
for the first time in weeks after exiting a post here. Although it
could be due to someone else's stupidity here at work as I am on a shared
computer... hrmmm.

Bart will uberboard stay if we continue to see it used for real ads?

Just wondering...

I thought the ipod stuff was a regular screwing around with uberboard

----------

At least one of those was me. The one with my name on it. But damn it, I want an iPod.

I hate popups and banner ads. If you see anything like that, it's not from Ubersite.

The Uberboard is kind of like an advertisement, but not really. When you think about it, anything can be an advertisement. If I said to you "Hey, have you seen Donnie Darko?", that's kind of an advertisement for that movie, except you would probably assume that I wasn't getting paid to tell you that, so what is it?

Granted, stupid crap like "CLICK HERE TO WIN A TRIP TO JAMAICA" or "PUNCH THE MONKEY TO WIN A NEW CAR" are a certain kind of ad. I know if I were going to spend a dollar on something - hell even if it were free - I would never use a line like that. I especially wouldn't put it in all caps. But, the idea is that it's open to whatever you want to do with it, as long as you pay a dollar.

The idea is to keep the price point low enough so that the person buying the space doesn't need to get a financial return on the message to make it worth while. Very simple. If a message cost $10,000, you would expect to get a good financial return for your investment. Since it's only a dollar, who the hell cares if it has a financial return... just have fun with it.

For the defaults, I used plain old quotes to try to suggest that people write non-annoying things like that instead of things that read like spam ads, but it's just a suggestion. I'm not going to stop people from putting things up there, so long as they don't cause any trouble. Still, at least it's not a seizure inducing flashing banner ad.

I have to go with JohnGalt here... it's really not that irritating. I'd take this over pop-ups any day.

ghey - I think you have the most constructive thing to say on this so far.

If Bart charged more than a dollar it would sort of lend a sort of justification
to the whole deal, yet at the same time, it would sort of take away from
what I see as it's original intent. Fact is that there are now in excess of
10850 registered accounts. It would make it harder for you or I to buy a spot
on Uberboard, but it would make it more expensive for someone to annoy me
with advertisements.

The more I think about this, the more I think Bart should filter out the advertisements,
or abandon it, but I also like the original idea (or what I see as the original intent).

This is hours after I posted now and I still don't like the ads, but they don't bother
me so much I couldn't get used to ignoring them, as I do many other things. When uberboard
first started I thought it was neat but also a way to "buy" popularity through advertising
that you are supporting ubersite. Either way it has it's ups and downs.

As advertising, it is probably close to the cheapest available on the net. As a way to support
ubersite, it could do better without the ads, 'keepin it real' so to speak.

I think if it's going to have real ads, Bart should start charging more than one dollar. I don't mind it up there, but it certainly bugs me that those assholes who post the "FREE iPOD LOL!"!"!"!" things only have to pay one dollar.

Yeah, I'm sure the pop-up was caused by spyware or something else.

I actually wanted to use uberboard to get more feedback on my posts, but I figure whatever I put on uberboard would get swallowed by ads for Ipods and the like.

Good input JohnGalt - I would like to reiterate that I do NOT blame
uber for the pop-up and I am almost sure that it was from a co-worker
of mine's stupidity. Last week I had to turn the security setting on
IE to high and not use the web or be assaulted by a veritable plethora
of spyware/adware blockers and pop-up blockers and free internet stuff
pop-ups. I was quite amused by the pop-up blocker pop-ups, the first
three times, after that I was thouroughly sick and tired of it. This
week when I get on to ubersite to see what's up I find some annoying
ads appearing in uberboard, which I found much more amusing as a place
to throw up interesting quotes for a dollar or just to help out Bart.
Especially the helping out Bart part. I personally do not participate
in uberboard for lack of a paypal account. I would however, be more than
willing to drop $1.50 to help out Bart by sending him money. I would rather
the help with uber be anonymous as well.

But all in all, it's Bart's site and he can do with it what he will.

I guess a part of this post is from my annoyance with the pop-ups I had
to deal with last week. Stupid downloading co-workers.

Who cares if it has real ads? It's only one line of the page. It's not obtrusive, and you don't have to click it.

I'd be willing to make bets on the pop-up not being caused by Ubersite. That has to be some sort of spy/ad ware. I've clicked at least 100 times on Uber today alone and have 0 pop-ups. I know, I need a life. Anyway, if you think about it, advertising space is precisely what the Uberboard is. Expecting it to be used only for hitwhoring and random quotes from Uber users is a bit naive. It's a necessary evil though, and done much better than most sites. In my opinion it's much better than using pop-ups and big ass banners. It's less than a quarter of an inch tall on my screen, nothing flashes, blinks or otherwise distracts me from what I'm reading, and it doesn't make me click close 80 times to get to the page I wanted to see. It just sits up there at the top and I only look at it if I want to.

It seems like a good idea, and I would support it if there was a way to prevent real advertisements from dominating it. As of now, it really puts a damper on the site.

Hey now. I'm not saying ubersite is the direct cause of my pop-up,
but I found it wierd that just as I was thinking about this post and
what the fuck is up with uberboard, I got a pop-up as I left a window
in ubersite.

I am not blaming ubersite for anything, that just confirmed I needed
to write about this.

Uberboard sucks now. I know Bart uses it to help reduce the costs incurred
from creating and running the site be they monetary or time. However, I
would rather he ask for donations and give an address (a P.O. Box#) which we could
use to send him money. That would be better as far as I am concerned.
