Good Chess players are said to have brilliant minds. Many are able to think 5, 6, 7 or even 8 moves ahead, and can predict the consequence of their move in relation to the whole game. It is through this ability that Grandmasters are made; they evaluate each move over and over in their head minutes, sometimes even hours before making it.

"We can't go on like this" Sally whimpered. There were tears in her eyes, and she attempted to wipe them away with the sleeve of her sweater.

"I love you Sally." His words were ignored. They didn't even penetrate the surface. She could sense the absence of truth in them. She turned away from him, bringing her hands to her head, and she began to sob.

Tim had been tempted, and he had give in to his temptation. Sally's sister was 18 years old. He knew it was wrong, but a combination of loneliness, cheap wine and a stupid mistake were all it took. He had slept with her. As hard as he tried to sound as though he meant them however, his words were just hollow, insincere. Sally's sobbing and sniffing echoed in his ears, he knew it was all over this time.

She turned round once more to face him, her eyes shining as though she were a cat caught in his headlights, the tears in her eyes causing them to glisten, almost painfully to him. He tried to meet her gaze, but turned away. He couldn't look into her eyes without seeing her sister; that tender, tempting milky skin. Her cherry red lips. He almost wanted to chuckle at the cliche of it all.

"Look me in the eyes Tim, look me in the eyes and tell me you love me!"

He tried once more. No good. His eyes were twitching nervously. He fidgeted with a loop on the waistband of his jeans, and then his eyes dropped once more, awkwardly eyeing the generic chessboard tiles of the kitchen floor.

"You bastard. You fucking bastard." She moved forward and barged into him, making her way for the door. He grabbed the sleeve of her sweater and pulled her back.

"Sally.. Please!" He pleaded.

"Get the fuck off me" She screamed. She began to swing her arms high, near Tim's face. He attempted to move out of the way, but caught a blow, head on with his temple. He blinked hard, trying to shake the wave of numbness which filled his head.

Starry eyed, he pulled her closer, in the vain hope that with her arms constricted against his chest she wouldn't be able to swing them. She pushed, and began kicking at his shins. He pulled her tighter towards him. She kicked desperately, and Tim felt a sharp pain in his left shin as Sally's brilliant white adidas trainer split the skin.

"You fuckin.... AHRRRHGGGGGGG!!!!!" He grabbed her by the arms and pushed her full force towards the back door, on the opposite side of the room.

Tim didn't see the puddle of water on the floor, left earlier by Sally when she mopped up some spilt coffee granules. She skidded, slipped and fell forward into the counter, her head bouncing off the immaculately finished granite work surface. It seemed almost comical to Tim, like out of a slapstick cartoon. It wouldn't have suprised him if she had got up, slapped on an ACME plaster and proceeded to chase him around the house with a 20ft cartoon mallet.

There were no ACME plasters however. No mallets. Only Sally lying in a pool of blood on the chessboard kitchen floor, and Tim kneeling down sobbing. Blood crept slowly away from her twitching body and tainted the tiles one by one. Black and White, the tiles were consumed by the crimson tide.

Checkmate.

Yes, but which of the three was the grandmaster?

On a not-so-related note: Did anyone hear that Bobby Fisher was captured? I think I heard that. (He was declared an enemy-of-the-state or something for playing chess against a russian during the cold-war).

This story reminds me of a JMG-JohnGalt hybrid.

Did Tim have sex with her after she died? I think that would have made the story a bit more complete, if you catch my drift.
