Springsteen has spoken.
This man is a living icon, a walking talking slice of Americana. He is now involved in a series of concerts sponsored by the political wing of MoveOn. There will be other acts, notably the Dixie Chicks, the Dave Matthews Band, and Pearl Jam. These bands will be performing in the swing states of North Carolina, Ohio, Michigan, Iowa, Minnesota, Missouri, Wisconsin and Florida. The concerts are to take place a month before the election.
To me this is a big deal. Springsteen has never been overtly political outside his music. The last time I remember a political statement from him was when Reagan misrepresented Born in the USA. You never see him on any of the talk shows pontificating on the social issues he writes about. Now I am not a huge fan of his music, but I am able to recognize his contribution to American culture over the last thirty years.
The credibility that Springsteen brings to the table has to make Bush supporters very uncomfortable. His songs have always resonated in the 'red states', even more so after the Ghost of Tom Joad was released. This move has to be answered by the Bushies. It will be interesting to see how they will combat these concerts. Will they try to counter program? I can see it now, Toby Kieth v. Bruce Springsteen. Thats a bit like a pit bull versus a toy poodle. Will they attempt to attack Bruce personally? That seems unlikely. I'll bet they stick their head in the sand, hoping that if they ignore it, it will go away.

Holy mother of god, Are you for real?
His music sucks and his politics suck. I would wish him dead. But, then the radio stations would play even more of his crap.
When a Springsteen song comes on the radio I change the station or turn it off in disgust. And this was before he "Spoke".
Filthy rich dumbass celebrities should shut the fuck up and you my friend are greatly lessened by proclaiming your adoration for that hairy hippie.
You love Michael Moore too? Fahrenheiht 911 was factual, huh?
You know Judoka, you have an excellent vocabulary, and you are well read and current. But, you filter the information and you believe what you choose to believe so that it fits into your religion: Liberalism. Open your eyes, you will be happier.

Bruce is the man. One of the greatest singer/songwriters in America. His lyrics are real and true, and speak to people from all walks of life. From the heartland struggles of the Nebraska album to the accounts of 9/11 in The Rising, he's able sing about things that most of us feel but simply can't put into words. And his live shows literally must be seen to be believed.
I'm sorry...I know this post wasn't meant to be an ode to Springsteen. But the guy is credible. And he's not like those dipshit entertainers who think that their celebrity entitles them to speak out on poltical issues whenever they get near a camera. He was asked to lend his talents and participate in a cause that he believes in, and that's what he's done. Any one of us would do the same.
Bottom line...if you don't like his music, fine. Most people under 30 don't. But if you don't respct the man's talent and conviction, you're just an idiot.

And to everyone else...

It may be past midnight in America, but it is the middle of the day here in Australia.

domenad-The man was hardly a millionare when he penned the lyrics to Darkness on the Edge of Town and Nebraska. It is from these slice of life albums that Springsteen earned his reputation as a champion for the blue collar worker.
Just because I stated that his songs play well in the red states doesnt preclude the fact his songs resonate in the blue states as well. Perhaps credibility was the wrong word to use. His popularity and his rapport (and there is one, just ask Reagan) makes people more likely to listen to him.
I didn't know that a geography test was a prerequiste to have an opinion on wether or not this war was a good idea, or have strong feelings on American soliders getting blow up in some rathole desert town.
And to everyone else...
arent you up past your bedtime?

Good to hear, I love it when musicians actually have something intelligent to say instead of the usual "I'm in love and it hurts so bad!" bullshit. The great thing about The Boss is that he appeals to the right wing as well, so this is just another nail in the coffin for the Bush Administration.
But then again even if Bush loses, doesn't mean that he won't still be president. Hail to the Thief!!!

"This man is a living icon, a walking talking slice of Americana"
How so? How is a multimillionaire musician representative of America? Americans like his music, "The Boss" and such, but that hardly means that he, personally has any street-cred with an average American.
"The credibility that Springsteen brings to the table has to make Bush supporters very uncomfortable. "
What credibility? He sings a lot of songs, songs that resonate in all states I would think, not just "red states", but where does that lend him credibility one? Or for that matter, the Dixie Chicks, Pearl Jam, or the depressingly dumb Dave Matthews? Most of these people couldn't name three cities in Iraq, but feel qualified to protest the war. Color me unimpressed, Bruce.
