For years now people have been tying yellow ribbons around trees to signify how badly they want troops to come home. Now there are stickers of ribbons being sold for the backs of cars. Enough is enough. Here are the lyrics to the song that started this movement, Tie a Yellow Ribbon.
I'm comin' home, I've done my time
Now I've got to know what is and isn't mine
If you received my letter telling you I'd soon be free
Then you'll know just what to do
If you still want me
If you still want me
Whoa, tie a yellow ribbon 'round the old oak tree
It's been three long years
Do ya still want me?
If I don't see a ribbon round the old oak tree
I'll stay on the bus
Forget about us
Put the blame on me
If I don't see a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree
Bus driver, please look for me
'cause I couldn't bear to see what I might see
I'm really still in prison
And my love, she holds the key
A simple yellow ribbon's what I need to set me free
I wrote and told her please
Whoa, tie a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree
It's been three long years
Do ya still want me?
If I don't see a ribbon round the old oak tree
I'll stay on the bus
Forget about us
Put the blame on me
If I don't see a yellow ribbon round the old oak tree
Now the whole damned bus is cheerin'
And I can't believe I see
A hundred yellow ribbons round the old oak tree
I'm comin' home
(Tie a ribbon round the old oak tree)
Note that it says "I'm really still in prison" not I'm still on my tour or anything like that. This song is about a guy recently released from prison, not a soldier that just returned from overseas engagement. So when these idiots do the yellow ribbon thing they are comparing our troops to prisoners, which while may have some truth to it, is this really the message you want to send to the people defending our freedoms?
Ok so it was just a rant that I used SPT as an excuse to vent... So here's a funny picture

The song you posted was a result of a tradition already in place.

Just for mentioning Tony Orlando and Dawn...you're officially gay. Congrats.

I don't care what the original meaning of the yellow ribbin is, there's no sense in knocking it since we all know what it's for now. When I get back from this god-forsaken land, the yellow ribbins will mean more to me than simply being home...it's a show of support for the return of the service members engaged over-seas...no matter where it came from.

Technically the song was written based on an occourance from the Civil War era. The original story involved a civil war soldier returning by stagecoach and had written to have his girl tie a yellow handkerchief as a sign of her continued commitment. It was changed to a ribbon by songwriters years later.

The prison reference is a metaphor.
