Drunk and dazed, the haggard stumbles back to his motel room - the stink of cigarettes, sex, and sweat saturating the air about him. Another night of debauchery has been added to the growing stain that has become the vestige of his life.
Face down he lies on the bed and begins to cry. Memories and feelings from the distillery of his past begin to surface of the family he had lost so long ago. Every night his children dance through his mind, bringing him pictures they have drawn with "I love you daddy" notes attached. He looks into their eyes and sees the whole world...
A loud voice jumps from the TV and reels him suddenly from slumber with "It slices, dices, purees, blends..." * CLICK *
The room goes black as the intruding hordes of reality are fought back again with the remote. Sleep does not come easy this time. His tears have now dried into a salty film around his eyes, and his buzz is swiftly releasing him like a sheep to the wolves of his sober thoughts.... Numbly he stares at the rustling curtain, as the pillow grows warm against his face; the thuds on the ceiling and wall tell of the activity still taking place around him. The clock reads 2:47.
Restless, he lights a cigarette and begins to think of a lone cedar tree in the midst of the South Dakota Badlands, and the bench where he had once sat on a late autumn day and watched the sun dissolve - she was in his arms. He thinks of how golden her hair was, and how beautiful she was when she smiled - about how when he would hold her he always felt like dying, knowing that heaven would never be found anywhere else.
He thinks of all these things...and he remembers how when they were together, he would always have dreams of losing her - only to awaken by her side, crying tears of relief that it was only a dream. The dream is still the same......only now when he awakens, he finds that the dream is real, and the comfort of her body is nowhere to be found. The tears are still there though; they've become his only friends.
Somewhere in the midst of his reverie, he falls to sleep and dreams he is once again in her arms...

.......It was a long morning for all the men of Local 292. The Fire Marshall had traced the origin of the blaze to room #102. Apparently, a man had been smoking and had fallen asleep. He was the only casualty. The obituary said he was survived by two children - one 6, one 10. The story in the papers said that his children had gone to live with their grandmother after his wife had died 2 years earlier from cancer.
Those who knew him said that he had never been the same since then. Some said that he had finally gotten his wish to die in her arms...

Thanks Filthy...I think I get negative ratings mostly from the asshole types who think I am somehow trying to take over their monopoly on assholeness. Being new doesn't help, and acting like a fool on manic days in replies to others' posts doesn't help my ratings. But I must admit that a lot of my stuff is shit that's not even worth the click.

Yea, that totally makes sense, and I did have that thought. I sorta reasoned that it might be something eveyone knew because it's all he talked about, maybe. Also, in a way I was underestimating the reader and trying to find a way end this focusing on him and his wife, and not the firemen.

I totally understand what you were trying to acheive. You succeeded. I'm just saying that once we know he is dead, and she died two years ago, we know they're together. The problem I have with that last line isn't just that it's redundant, it's this: How would anybody else know that he dreams of being in her arms?

Actually, Circe, your post about the orange light kinda inspired me to try writing in a form where you seem to get images of what's going on, but not until the end twist do things really take hold. So, I guess, I should thank you.
