I was addicted and you were my drug.
I inhaled and held you inside until you made me float above everything else but you. I was thirsty for an altered state and drank you in excess. I injected your influence into my blood and let you tingle my brain until my vision blurred.
You made my heart race and my palms sweat. You calmed my nerves. Under your influence I saw things in things like never before.
I gambled my saving grace to experience you, higher and higher each hit. I paid the price, rolled the dice and incurred the debt.
But you were in short supply.
Meeting the demands of others. Tending to your own addictions. Making connections and clandestine deals in the dark corners and intersections where I wasn't invited to travel.
Still I wanted more. Not just a little more, but enough to take me on a trip outside my reality beyond consciousness into a world of our own. But you had a business to run and things to do beyond maintaining my hallucination of us.
Up at night unable to sleep, distracted and disoriented, I shivered and waited for your fix and later and later it came.
Having me around pleading for your remedy not condoned by others was risky business and I became your contraband. To protect your interests you withdrew your effect on me. Leaving me alone to withdraw from you.
The colors dulled, the swings stopped, the smoke cleared and the mirror was washed. You made room for other thoughts and I was cleansed of you.
But if you find me caught off guard, planting flowers in the yard, awake my ghosts and hold my arms, inject your harm into my veins, and watch me overdose.
