I am proud to be American.
My pride in America has nothing to do with any other nation. I don't care what other nations think or do. My pride in America isn't like your pride for your favorite team. It isn't related to how well we are doing in the FWL (First World League). I think foreign relations are important, but not a good source of national pride.
My first ten reasons of pride are itemized and numbered in our bill of rights. I am proud to be American because we believe in freedom. I am proud to live in a country where I can worship the same god as our most dire enemies. I'm proud that I can call our highest leader an idiot whenever and wherever I please. I'm proud that I can carry .44 magnum revolver concealed on my person to defend myself in the natural or urban wilderness. I'm proud that I am not considered second class behind soldiers and police, and I'm glad that those figures cannot invade my privacy without due cause. I'm proud that I can refuse to incriminate myself. I'm proud of speedy and just trials by jury which, upon my protest, may be appealed to higher courts. I'm proud that even when found to be guilty, I must be treated humanely regardless of my crime. I'm proud of the token rights that the states still preserve.
I'm proud of Capitalism. I'm glad I live in a country where your talent will only take you as far as your ambition reaches. I'm glad my country expects me to be self-reliant first. I'm proud of low tax rates that are still protested. I'm proud of free trade and free enterprise.
I'm proud of our racially integrated communities. I'm pleased to find overwhelming cultural diversity within our cities, states, and country. I'm proud that Mohammed Rashid can run a successful business despite the fact that his third cousin once removed shoots RPG's at our soldiers. I'm proud that Asians play in the NBA, Whites sing on BET, and Blacks serve on the Executive Cabinet. I'm proud that women can run corporations and men can be homemakers. I'm proud that who you are is more important here than what you look like.
I'm proud that other Americans are proud, even if they are different than me and may hate my opinions.
And, yeah, I guess I have to admit that I'm also proud that America's success has the rest of the world pissed off.

Wordplay? That's not an example of wordplay. "The pitcher drank from the pitcher" is word play. "Surely that's something Shierly can do" is word play. "Not sure what deceipt is, (like a receipt)*?" is not wordplay. They have to have either the same spelling or sound the same for it to be wordplay. Perhaps you should look up examples of wordplay, or even read what he had to say again, to realise that he wasn't using wordplay. So please insult me on my thoughts on why people might hate Americans rather than on something you got confused about. Or insult me on my spelling and grammar, since it seems so important to you.

A new recruit in the Aussie Army tends to know more about how to be a soldier than Delta, Rangers, and SEALS, Marines, etc. (Yes, I have heard of them). The SAS are the most elite in the world. It takes approximately 12 Rangers and/or Delta to equal one SAS trooper in terms of skills.

I agree that the SAS are pretty impressive, in fact they're badasses. But 12 to 1??
The USN SEALS got through more rigorous training than any elite force.
Not to mention the weaponry issued is the most sophisticated around.
Now rangers or marines might be a little easier for your boys to deal with.

A new recruit in the Aussie Army tends to know more about how to be a soldier than Delta, Rangers, and SEALS, Marines, etc. (Yes, I have heard of them). The SAS are the most elite in the world. It takes approximately 12 Rangers and/or Delta to equal one SAS trooper in terms of skills.
US Soldiers are all trained in the use of a few specific weapons, whereas an Aussie soldier can se almost any (if not all) munitions that are avaliable on the market.
So, please, stop believing everything you see in a holywood film.
Now, about the US being able to kick our asses and have time to get home and screw their women... I find this funny - NOONE has ever been able to land on Australian soil. A declaration of war against Australia is synonymous with one on Britain and EVERY commonwealth country in the world. And let's not forget all of the pacific islands that we are allied with, they will give you hell; and just about every Asain country would join our cause if only to screw you over at the least. So, you're looking at over half the world to fight if you declared war.
Now, let's say you actually did overcome all of these obsticles, and invaded Aus itself - you don't even know how we plan on defending ourselves in the event of an invasion!!! I do, and it will take years to fully occupy Australia, ad that's without all of our secret installations, missiles, and airforce. That also does not take into account the fortresses in the desert (yes, we used our brains for those).
Once you've been in the army, it all falls into place.

Good reasons.
And yeah, the fact that America has succeeded does piss everyone off, because they did it on their own terms without approval. Not th best course of action, but they still succeeded.
One of the reasons some people dislike the "American Attitude" or whatever a hater likes to call it, is that often Americans come off as thinking that their is the ONLY country with these benefits. While it certainly is not, these are good reasons to be proud of your country.
But I prefer higher taxes.

I totally agree cantrell. This should be required. Spend a little time in a culture before you blast it. I spent 2 weeks in Italy in May (college grad. trip, woohoo!) and it changed my whole perspective of Europe.
Recently a girl's family visited us for 2 weeks. (She was a foreign exchange student that stayed with us.) They found America to be quite different than the lies about America most French beieve in.

People ask what my thoughts are on America. I can never tell them a straight answer. I sometimes picture the world as say, a highschool. In that highschool there are many types of people. I believe that the Americans would be classified as the "Bully". They do what they want, when they want, how they want. The Americans would be classified also as the "Brain kid" or "Mr.KnowItAll". You know the kid that did well and that was an example of what the rest of the school should be doing, but never shut up about how much higher their mark was or how more pretty their work was.
I dont believe people hate americans because of thier success, or the mighty army. They might hate them because they resemble those two highschool figures. Sure they have the biggest army, but don't do what ever you want, when you want, because you can. I think it's that mentality that people find Americans annoying. They preach how proud they are. Good for you, but you can stop waving it in our faces. I guess it all comes down to respect and decency.
Americans wonder sometimes why some people hate them so, or wonder why they get singled out, (someone was complaining about how America wasnt the only one invading Iraq). Perhaps it's cause you just might be that "bully" or "Knowitall" in highschool. Or maybe the fact that you claim to have saved WW2, which you may have, but you showed up late. Which ever the reason, I guess in the end they hate you.

I agree for the most part with this, and I too am proud to be an American. Mainly because I've been socialized to be proud, but I don't really care. America kicks ass. And our military is way better than the fucking aussies. I love Australia. It's a sweet place, and rugby is way tougher than football, but our military is the best in the world. I saw an Australian army commercial on TV:

1. Yes, quite proud. America is one of the few countries who still practices this just and appropriate punishment.

3. Not proud, really. However, the media's right to free speech still applies. You see, in our country, the media is privately owned.

Bullshit. Another CLASSIC example of how the Canadians blame America for the fact that their OWN politicians did not have the balls to stand up to the USA. Yes, the States really put financial pressure on Canada in ways that ultimately contributed to the demise of the Arrow, but what really killed the plane was its high production costs and in-fighting among Canadian politicians and business owners.
I do agree that the AVRO was the best aircraft of that time and that its loss was a tragedy, but Jesus Christ, blaming the US for the fact that you guys caved and cut the Avro into scrap is just pathetic.

i love America because it is my home, too. this place is great. i don't like some of the things that happen when people that don't share my values are in power, but let's face it, most countries are the same way. it can't be perfect all the time. the only thing that really bothers me is that if Bush does something the world doesn't like, Americans in general take a lot of flack for it. it's not my fault what he does. he wasn't even elected and even if he had won legitimately, i didn't vote for him. on the other side, i hate it when Americans get defensive and bring on the psuedo pride. being American doesn't make you better than anyone. it doesn't make you luckier than anyone. it just makes you a person from a country called America.

I missed how America cheated to get to the top. Someone want to explain that. From what I know there were a metric buttload of pissed off colonials that were sick of being pushed around by the British Monarchy so they FOUGHT for their FREEDOM. Then, with a well formed government that can take care of its own damn self, the country continued to successfully defend itself. So screw off.
I am not proud that we "invaded" Iraq, but I do think that it was a good idea. Saddam Hussein could have been a dangerous man who could have been planning to hurt millions of innocent people. Not including those residing in his country.
Most people hate the American government and pass it on to American citizens. The citizens do not make the decision to invade, defend, give,....we simply live. We vote for officials that we think would be best suited to make those decisions in a committee. And that is why we succeed. There is no all powerful man to say what everyone has to do. No! On the other hand, your statement regarding concealed weapons permits in every state is only recently true (if it even is - I really don't know). Ohio just had a concealed weapons bill go into effect within the last 8 months. Before that, it was illegal to carry it concealed and/or loaded.

And yeah, the fact that America has succeeded does piss everyone off, because they did it on their own terms without approval. Not th best course of action, but they still succeeded.
One of the reasons some people dislike the "American Attitude" or whatever a hater likes to call it, is that often Americans come off as thinking that their is the ONLY country with these benefits. While it certainly is not, these are good reasons to be proud of your country.
