Before you start -2ing me to death, hear me out first. I myself feel almost blasphemous writing this post, but it has to be said.

The Simpson's is arguably the greatest show in the history of television. It has been named in every single poll as the funniest show ever. Season four DVD sales are through the roof, and talk of a Simpson's movie has fans salivating like rabid dogs.

But it is this man's humble opinion that the show has run its course. I know it, you know it, and Harry Shearer knows it.

http://www.examiner.ie/breaking/2004/08/05/story160340.html

You are too lazy to click on that link so I'll summarize. It is a short interview with Harry Shearer in which he blasts the Simpson's for being totally unfunny these past three seasons. Mr. Shearer is well known for voices like Ned Flanders and Mr. Burns and is one of the main reasons the show has become so ingrained in popular culture. His opinion is obviously one that is qualified, and I for one agree with him.

These past three seasons of the show have been complete and utter bullshit. There used to be a time where I would get excited when Sunday night rolled around. A new episode of the Simpson's, get ready for laughter! (ok, that was gay). Now, the excitement I once had has been replaced by slow head shaking and disgust. It seems like all they are trying to do see who they can get to guest star next. Britney Spears, Mel Gibson, Blink 182; all shitty episodes. There is even talk about booking 50 cent for an episode next year. 50 fucking cent. That's when you know the show has gone to hell.

And you know what's the most surprising? The Simpson's are enjoying the highest ratings ever, higher than all the glory years of Seasons 4-10. And there are reasons for this.

Firstly, the show has become stupid. It has become less intelligent, more crude, and the jokes are less subtle. It is being dumb down to appeal to a bonehead mass audience and it makes me want to puke. Secondly, as retarded as it may sound, there are still some people out there who have never seen an episode of the Simpson's. The show is still getting new users/fans. Perhaps they never understood the show before because it was so kick ass satirical. Now that it's been dumb down so much, they finally get it. "HA HA! He said poo."

Thirdly, say the Simpson's is canceled. Then what? TV blows right now. Nothing can replace that show. You can't replace the Simpson's with "who's going to be my mom" or some shit like that. One of the reasons people still watch new episodes of the Simpson's is because there is nothing else to watch. The worst Simpson's episode murders the best reality TV show.

So, I pose the question to you Uber. Has the Simpson's run its course? Should the show be canceled? I'm looking for some intelligent discussion here, not "U R DA SUK. DA SIMSUNZ R DA r0x0rz!!11"

I leave you now with a contemporary classic:

Ullman shorts, Christmas show, Marge's fling, Homer's bro,
Bart in well, Flanders fails, Whacking snakes, monorail,
Mr. Plow, Homer space, Sideshow Bob steps on rakes,
Lisa's future, Selma's hubby, Marge not proud, Homer chubby,
Homer worries Bart is gay, Poochie, U2, NRA,
Hippies, Vegas, and Japan, Octuplets, and Bart's boy band,
Marge murmurs, Maude croaks, Lisa buddhist, Homer tokes,
Maggie blows Burns away, What else do I have to say?
They'll never stop The Simpsons, Have no fears, we've got stories for years,
Like, Marge becomes a robot, maybe Moe gets a cell phone,
Has Bart ever owned a bear or, How 'bout a crazy wedding?
Where something happens, and doo doo doo doo, doo
Sorry for the clip show, have no fears, we've got stories for years.

I agree; during the '90s The Simpsons and Seinfeld were the greatest social satires on TV. At least Seinfeld had the grace to bow out when the producers/writers knew the jig was up. The Simpsons has long since run its course.
*Sigh* No news yet on Season 5 appearance on DVD...

That having been said, I don't have much original feedback on this post. You guys have said a mouthful. The Simpsons need new writers or a graceful retirement.

I cancelled my cable a while ago. It was much cheaper to download everything I watch. I have just about every episode of Sealab, The Brak Show, Futurama, Family Guy, The Simpsons, Harvey Birdman, Aqua Teen Hunger Force, Penn & Teller's "Bullshit", Spongebob Squarepants, MTV's "Punk'd", Home Movies, Mission Hill, South Park, Clone High, and a whole mess of others I am sure I'm forgetting... along with nearly 200 DVD quality movies. Most people have forgotten it's even illegal at this point.

Hard drives and bandwidth are cheap. All you have to do is queue some BitTorrents up before going to school or work, and you can watch your favorite crap again and again. DVDs and cable are expensive. No contest.

After hours of downloading while I was at school, I managed to get seasons 4-15 of the Simpsons, and have since started a task which i may never finish: a best-of Simpson's clip show that contains only the most hilarious moments of the series. after going through appromately 140 of the shows, I've come up with 90+ clips. In doing so, I realized something that challenged my views, which originally were in line with comicbookguy's. The show's set up or premises over the years may have gotten increasingly outrageous, but specific scenes and jokes overall have gotten much funnier over the years. I'm not a dumb humor type of guy. Its just true that the scene writing has actually gotten better

This show has been asking for it for years. Last episode I saw was when Homer got mauled by a bear and got called a wussy. The story was so boring even the coloring looked screwed up. But, what do you expect from the most liberal show on television. Popular culture controls the media so they're gonna turn to guest shots of Britney Spears if you like it of not.

The Simpsons episodes that I watch these days (because I have to) are nothing like the awesome ones that I grew up with. I was disgusted with the Britney Spears cameo, and the Blink 182/Tony Hawk episode was, in my opinion, the worst, episode, ever (might be beat by the 50 Cent episode, I bet).

I agree totally on all points, though I still love the Simpsons, they raised me after all.
Simpsons new episodes are just terrible now, and the old good ones are showed so often that all you have to do is watch 2 seconds then you can remember it from having watched it 15 times(roughly the actual amount).
Also I agree with how there nothing to replace all those amazing shows leaving the air. We must fight these new crappy reality shows or "choke their rivers with our dead", the whole reason for TV is to escape reality.

It's getting worse. Almost every time I turn on the TV and I see a old or crappy Simpsons, or reality show I die a little inside.

While I don't agree 100% (maybe 30% or so), you do make a good point. The Simpsons humor is becoming more pop culture, rather than the "sophisticated" (and I use that term loosely) humor it once had in the good 'ol days.

Frankly, I think the best line I've heard from the TV in the past few years is the futurama episode where they go to the race track, the race ends in an "quantum finish," and the prof. exclaims:

No fair! You changed the outcome by measuring it!

If you don't get it... my deepest sympathies.

The Simpsons still rule, but this post is worh +1 for remaining vigilant. The sad fact of television is that all tv series threaten to Jump The Shark after a long time on the box. Whether or not you think Simpsons has gotten better or worse is irrelevant because it still kicks, maims and downright slaughters 90% of what else is on the airwaves.

And no, not even Family Guy or Futurama in its zenith was able to match The Simpsons.

There's no need for it to be cancelled. There's one more season left on the contract and that season begins in the fall as usual. That'll be its 15th season, making it the longest running sitcom ever. 15 is a nice and even number and there's no reason to go beyond that.

Remember the days when Homer actually went to work, had marriage problems, and had trouble paying bills? I don't. Now every episode is about some crazy scenario that Homer gets into. He's barely ever at work yet he still can provide for his family. Every year the show gets more random and impossible. I hate how it lost its subtle humor and instead having sight jokes providing cheap laughs (ie. Moe's pickle jar getting shot and he claiming that he didn't take enough pictures, or the 5 second completely uncalled-for return of Dr. Marvin Monroe).

If Fox doesn't sign another contract after the next season, I'll be happy. Family Guy's coming back in January. Seth McFarlane is the man. Screw Futurama.

R.I.P. Phil Hartman. Troy McClure and Lionel Hutz are missed.

Perhaps The Simpsons has run its course. I agree with the declining quality issues, but that does not have to be the death knell for such a great show. They can salvage the show; they just have to listen to their viewers. I think the show is only mirroring Fox's mentality as of late. I mean, Simple Life, Trading Spouses, and any other Fox reality show have tried to crush our intelligence, not nurture it.
All is not in vain, though. Fox has announced that Family Guy is coming back this fall. Now, if we could just get Futurama off Adult Swim and back into Fox primetime, the utopia that was once Fox animated programming may not be dead, after all.

There seems to be a modern phenonemon that is increasingly occuring these days where a piece of satire becomes exactly like the article that it was originally attempting to satirise. It happened to Ali G as well. I believe its because the masses are pretty fucking stupid, so when something becomes successful why the fuck should they try with brains when they can get exactly the same ratings from simple slapstick.

A brighter person may be able to tell me a word for this occurance ?

To me, it looks like they are just writing episodes for the sake of writing episodes. They want to see how dumb they can make it before people start complaining for real and ratings drop. If ratings are the highest they have ever been, logically, why would they cancel it? I still think it should be canned though.

I do recall that "Large Marge" (from 1 or 2 seasons ago?) was a decent episode, not because it was funny, but because it fueled my deeply buried (and long unspoken) infatuation with her. Is that wrong?

It was painful for me to read that because I am one of the biggest Simpsons fans alive. I've even written entire episodes but haven't gotten a chance to submit them yet. But what you say is entirely true. The last 3 seasons have been downright awful. They have replaced all the genius wit they once possessed with cheap gags that could blend in seamlessly with any one of those shit ass movies that Leslie Nealson stars in.

But I don't think The Simpsons should be canceled. The show, with its enormous cast, has the potential for a plethora of new story lines and twists. They don't have to be restricted to the same format. Just as they experimented with the Pulp Fiction episode and all the Halloween episodes, and even with the regular format, there is still a lot of possibilities.

The show just needs better writers. People who have the ability to create. I am a medical student and my time is limited but I would gladly sacrifice any time I had to write for that show just to keep it alive. I know that sounds cocky of me to think I could write for them but the stuff I did write got pretty good reviews from my brothers and my friends who are also avid Simpsons fans.

And another thing...why can't The Simpsons borrow successful elements from other shows? Dedicate a few episodes to spoofing current events like Southpark, except do it in a Simpsons fashion....or how about including a lot of crazy and random flashbacks/imagined scenes like in The Family Guy.... The Simpsons is too important a show to allow to die.

I remember watching the first season (I think) of the simpsons when I was six years old. That was 11 years ago. You remember the episodes where on the intro bart skateboards past a straight line of people and steals the bus sign? Instead of weaving in and out of them? Those were the days when every second night was the episode where Bart steals Jebediah (sp?) Springfield's head. The humor was also lame and stupid, but it got better every episode.

Often I find myself standing in the shower or eating breakfast, playing out entire scripts of the simpsons in my head.

I sound like an obsessed fan, but since I have watched it at least 30 minutes a day for the past 11 years, you could say a good 2% of my life so far has been devoted entirely to The Simpsons.

I think there's more going on behind the scenes that no one is taking into account. There are many different writers for the show. I think the fault lies within that area, I don't think they made a conscious decision to turn the show into potty humour. If more talented writers were to step up to the challenge of bringing back the subtle humour and classic Simpson style show then we'd have something worth watching. I speak with experience, I began watching the Simpsons when I was in grade 4 (the first season) and I'm pretty sure that there isn't a single episode I haven't seen, unless it's one from the past year that I may have missed.

I say cancel the damn show, I haven't been able to stomac it lately. lets hope they do it when the new episodes of Family Guy start up. ATHF cancelation? I doubt, I hope it's just a lame publicity stunt.

Family Guy and Futurama. All day.

THEN you can cancel the Simpsons.

well stated case. i, for one, am with the family guy vote. they fill that fast-moving-humor void that the new simpsons just can't fill anymore.

like many here, i stopped regularly watching the simpsons around when i graduated from high school (2000). I'll still watch an episode here and there to see if there's some genuinely funny stuff, but I find myself laughing at needless slapstick nonsense in these episodes while picking my nose and being easily distracted by a fly on the wall. In another room. It's not a happy state of affairs.

Luckily, Fox does well to show multiple old episodes daily. Combine this with my Family Guy DVD's and I'm a happy camper in spite of the Alzheimer's/Parkinson's that has befallen the ratings behemoth that is The Simpsons.

It seems the Simpsons started to go downhill as soon as they started bringing out season 1 Futurama.

Although The Simpsons is the most comforting shows on TV to watch, Futurama is a better show. What the fuck happened? Did all the funny, original Simpsons writers get transferred to Futurama? Replace with retards who write cliched plots and jokes which are just variants of old Simpsons jokes?

It is that classic subtle humor that made Simpsons so good. But now it is gone from the show completely, but at least Futurama had that. I hope they are planning for a new season of Futurama.

"Everybody's a jerk. You, me, this jerk."

- Bender

"Tell them I hate them!"

- Professor Farnswerth (almost as cool as me, professor fuckface)

Also, I noticed there are little simpsons quotes on the bottle of every submission. They should have some futurama ones, and also some ones from the simpsons that are newer than season 4.

long time simpsons fan, first time uber poster.
the show has definitely become stale, but like you said, the worst simpsons show kicks ass over the best reality show anyday and twice on sunday's. they're not re-inventing the comedy wheel, but i think the writers of the show are doing a pretty decent job of mixing current events/celebrities into the plots. face it, the show will never be anywhere near as funny or good as it was during the first several seasons, but it's still better than anything else out there.

Say goodbye...one last time...again. Posted Thursday, August 5, 2004, 12:10AM by TylerL
According to this promo, the last episode of Aqua Teen Hunger Force will be airing this Sunday at Midnight.
In honor of this occasion, the promo is available in MEGADEF480™.
This turn of events is extra sad when you consider that there are four unaired episodes of the latest season that will never see the light of day, since ATHF is being cancelled now.
Because of poor ratings and poor DVD sales.
You horrible people.
In other news, Pilot Candidate has been picked up again by Adult Swim, and another 12 episodes have been ordered. They'll be replacing Family Guy starting in October.
----------------------------------
Looks like no more Family Guy, what the fuck is going on. First they did it to Undergrads, now ATHF and Family Guy reruns. WWHHHHHYYYYYYYY?

It's way too late for them to get out while the gettin's good. Let them run it into the ground.

(As long as every new show still has at least one good one-liner or sight gag in it we'll keep watching like donkeys with carrots dangled in front of them. Why must they torture us so?)

ATHF, what the fuck is that about although they did say that sunday is season 3 @midnight eastern. Still have been to lazy to go out and buy season 2.

Being a non-digital viewer, I've only really seen the ones up to about 2000, maybe. Whatever series that is, but the ones they re-run on BBC2 are still the good ones. However, I've downloaded some of the newer ones from Kazaa and have found it disappointing.

Felt like they'd swapped the writers for some student "comics" who try too hard. I think you're right about them wanting to appeal to stupid people or perhaps even just young kids. It is dying. All good things come to an end, even if they wont admit it.

Satire has lost to slapstick.

You're right quality has declined.
Rather than send the show to the glue factory, Fox should shake things up and get a few fresh writers.

Shit, the merchandising alone must make them billions.

I used to watch The Simpsons religiously, but I stopped after the show no longer appealed to me. I completely agree with you. Remember when episodes had a clear cut story? When the you knew exactly where the story wanted to go? Nowadays, the episodes have no point. It's just the family doing different things and the story isn't as good. I miss the old episodes.

Great post, but I'm not sure I agree...at least not with the cancellation part, despite the admitted decline in quality. A lot of my friends echo your sentiments, but I still maintain that a shitty episode of the Simpson's is still better than 95% of everything else. And they still churn out a real winner here and there.

Plus, I need my 8 o'clock Sunday night ritual.

I can do nothing but agree with this. The show has been going steadily downhill for quite a long time; maybe its time they finally pull the plug. I'd rather be watching Family Guy anyway.
