Just a warning: This is long and requires thought. While not a prerequisite for reading this, superficial knowledge of psychology and microprocessors will be helpful. This is not like what I usually post here. Those expecting a shit joke or more proof that Bargled is a doucherag should click the back button.
So there I was sitting in the library doing my homework. Typical boring shit, solving seventh order ordinary differential equations by hand. Let me tell you, this sucks. Once I finish that, I remember I have to learn about microprocessors.
I grab a book on the Motorola 68000 series. After reading about a hundred pages, I realized that this too sucks. I think I have enough to write my shitty one page busywork paper. So I look around the library. I remember that libraries make Corn Nugget shit. Why is that?
Then I spy it. DSM-IV. I remember that from psych class. Let us crack it open. I read that too. So in the same sitting I have read about the human brain and the computer's brain. Interesting.
If you have not already drop'd a -2 No Comment, you are wondering where old Fetwad is going with this. As I sit there, I have this startling revelation. While the microprocessor does not function in the same way as the brain and microprocessor architecture is very different from the neural networks that make up the brain; we can treat psychological impairments in much the same manner as problems that arise in a microprocessor-based system.
You are going to have to work with me here, this is kind of reaching, but to me it makes sense. I am going to draw some parallels between the functionality of the brain and the microprocessor. I will not discuss the differences in the internal architecture of either. We will treat both as a black box made from both hardware and software, and ignore the differences in how digital logic and neural networks do their jobs. We will also ignore the difference between the Von Neumann and Harvard microprocessor architectures. It is not important to this little thought.
With a microprocessor, it is fairly clear what hardware and software is. The hardware is the individual components and the connections that interconnect them. Software is the instructions that tell the hardware what to do. In the case of a microprocessor, those instructions are put there by a person. With the exception of artificial intelligence, which we will not consider, it cannot program itself.
Now let us separate the human brain in the same manner. We can view the hardware as the individual brain cells, along with the chemical and electrical signals that connect them. Software is the instructions that tell this mass of cells what to do. Some software is genetic (think firmware, like BIOS on a PC), some software is learned, and some software is the result of thought. Unlike the microprocessor, the brain can write its own software.
There seems to be some debate on whether a medical or psychological approach is appropriate for treating mental illness. I say both have their places. Let us look at a few scenarios. Hardware problem, software fix. Hardware problem, hardware fix. Software problem, hardware fix. Software problem, software fix.
First is the hardware problem, with software fix. Let us look at a hypothetical microprocessor situation. An engineer designs a system that interfaces a display with a microprocessor. The prototype works well. He gives the job of connecting the system together to a less than qualified individual. Due to his incompetence, when AlahAckbar hooks everything up he swaps two data lines. Now the display just shows garbage. Instead of having Alah fix the systems, and risk fucking something else up, our star engineer changes the software to swap those data lines. This way two wrongs do make a right. The problem is this: What if next time Alah gets it right? Now the software is wrong!
Now let us look at a similar problem in terms of the human brain. Imagine that a person has a low level of serotonin in the brain. Traditional psychotherapy attempts to "reprogram" the mind. In this case, no amount of "happy talk" will correct the problem. It is as if our boy Alah forgot to connect some of the data lines in our other example. No amount of software changes can fix this; we need to repair the connections! This is why psychotherapy should fail; there is no software fix for this hardware problem!
Next is the hardware problem, hardware fix. Going back to Alah and his fucked up system, we simply get a more competent technician, like KoolMang, to fix the fuckup. Now everything works fine. Everyone is happy.
Remember our defective brain? The one that was lacking the serotonin... What if by some magical method, we could raise serotonin levels? This would be a hardware fix to a hardware problem. We can do just that with an SSRI. (Read Zoloft, Paxil) In this case, the fix matches the problem type and things work out well.
Now we have a software problem, with a hardware fix. Back to our microprocessor system. This time our star engineer forgot to send the signal to turn on the display. This time Alah, who has recently been schooled by the much wiser KoolMang, decides to just connect that signal to always be on. Now it works. Or does it? What if the system needs to turn off the display? It cannot. Alah fixed the symptom, not the problem. (Maybe someday KoolMang can learn the boy to do something right. He is making progress.)
How does this extend to the human brain? Imagine a traumatic experience occurs and creates some sort of mental problem. The brain has effectively been "reprogrammed" by the traumatic experience. In this case, there is nothing wrong with the hardware as everything is wired correctly. We could use our SSRI again, possibly some barbaric method such as shocking the person, or maybe give them a sedative. All of these approaches fail, because the problem is software, not hardware! Why "fix" what isn't broke? In this case, behavioral therapy may be the correct option.
Let us see a software problem, with software fix. Returning to our display system with the bad software problem, this time our star engineer realizes he botched the code and fixes it. (Like an engineer is ever wrong, it is always the technician!) Problem solved!
Now we have our human brain equivalent. Instead of medicating the person with the traumatic event, we realized that the behavior is a learned behavior. So... We try behavior modification to effectively "reprogram" the brain. While not all behaviors can be changed, we at least have a chance.
Both hardware and software methods can be combined in practice. This is true of both the microprocessor system and the human brain. It seems that most problems have both hardware and software components. However, it is helpful to recognize the nature of the problem. For someone with an engineering background, like me, drawing these parallels between software/hardware and learned/chemical problems seemed to make sense. Your mileage may vary.

A lot of psychiatrists throw medication at their patients as if any mental disorder is simply a chemical imbalance. Most people who get these meds thrown at them insist that it's not that simple, and in my experience, they're usually right. I like your analogy with hardware vs software - it's an idea I've sort of toyed with myself.

You know, the arguement between the brain and microprocessor struck me as very interesting.
It reminds me of that age-old question of analog vs digital. Of course digital will win, but its like wood vs electricity.
You should compare the two or something. By the way, nice change of pace. This should be rated positively, because it wasn't a hate post, it just had AlahAckbar as the inexperienced technician and Koolmang as the more experienced one.
