NECROSIAC PT 5

"So where do we go from here?" She asked.

Mattaius scowled at the dinner growing cold on his plate and wondered what to say next. He hadn't planned on bringing this up now, but the topic had come up regardless, as if it had a life of its own. He felt cornered and off guard.

He'd been thinking of ending their relationship for some time. Neither one of them was truly happy. He had never intended their relationship to get this complicated to begin with. They had started off as lovers, two people looking for the same thing, a mutual release. She had just come out of the last in a string of bad, if not abusive relationships, and he had just come out of the Corpse. When they met they were both burnt out, lonely and feeling out of touch with themselves and the rest of humanity. They had met when, on the invitation of an old friend, he had joined them for drinks at the local bar.

It took him an embarrassing long time to realize it was a set up. Ted and Christie had invited them both knowing full well their situations, and it was just like Ted's wife to want to play the matchmaker. In hindsight he should have known something was up from the start. Ted had called at the last minute and told him he was in the area and why didn't they just go in his car. Hell, when Mattaius thought about it, even Ted's excuse for being in the area was bad. Something about getting parts for a light fixture at the hardware store down the street, and "I know how you Army Brats drink, I'll do the driving tonight boss". If Mattaius hadn't been so desperate for company he would have realized right off the bat that the hardware store wasn't open at 9:30 on a Saturday evening.

Their introduction had been awkward. The table the ladies selected had been behind a half wall and he didn't really get a good look at Sheri until they were standing in front of each other. Ted had made a joke in the way of an introduction that made Christie give a slightly scornful laugh, the kind of laugh that only a woman could give, the kind that said "You're a bad man for saying that, and that's why I love you".
Neither Mattaius nor Sheri had really paid much attention. They were both too caught up in the momentary paralysis that sometimes comes with a strong sexual connection.

Sheri had been the first to break the trance. Mattaius wasn't sure if something in his expression had suddenly made her uncomfortable, or if the realization of what Ted and Christie were up to dawned on her, but the smile on her face had darkened a little as she offered her hand to him. "Hi... Sheri" He took her hand and did his best not to hold it for too long. He remembered it had felt soft and warm, but there'd been strength there as well and he'd immediately wondered what she did for a living. "Matt" he said.

"Helloooo," proclaimed Ted a little too loudly "Just said that! echo? echo?" Christie had giggled again but the tone had changed to "Okay now your just being a dork"

God Sheri had looked good in the warm light of the bar. At 6'4" Mattaius had typically gravitated towards taller women. Sheri was probably 5'6" at best, but something about her shape or maybe the way she carried herself made her seem taller to him. She had an air of confidence that even now seemed to add a couple of inches. Short semi-curly black hair lent a sexy tomboyish quality to a face that carried a kind of classic cosmopolitan look. Her eyes were dark brown, almost black and small lines on the outside of each imbued her with an air of mischief like she knew a secret that no one else did. Her body was solidly put together, muscular almost. She wore tight jeans and a black tank-top that stopped just above her navel. Her breasts were small for her frame but looked as firm as the rest of her. The perfect touch to her tomboy charms. Mattaius guessed her age at 28.
Weeks later he would find out that at 31 she was only 3 years younger than him.

The majority of the evening was uneventful, comprised of small talk mostly on the part of Ted and Christie while Mattaius and Sheri exchanged furtive glances across the table. As usual Ted had too much to drink and ended the evening by knocking over a pitcher of beer with a grand sweep of his hands while proclaiming to the bar that he was there with his best buddy from college, the "Fucking goddamned hero" who had just got back from protecting democracy from the "Evils of them goddamned Necromantic Terrorist Cunts". Christie could see that Mattaius was less than comfortable with the heart felt accolade and came to his aid, playing the good wife and convincing Ted it was time for bed and "No dear, I think I'll do the driving tonight."

Warm goodbyes were made including an overly enthusiastic hug from Ted. "Love ya buddy, love ya, fucking great to see you again." Christie had given Sheri, then Mattaius a kiss on the cheek, and they'd exchanged friendly lies to keep in touch, but not before Christie had made sure to cement her plans for the couple. "You don't mind walking Sheri home do you Matt? This isn't the safest neighborhood and she only lives a couple of blocks away" Mattaius had looked at Sheri who had simply smiled and said "That would be nice"

Done deal.

The walk to Sheri's house was mostly comprised of comfortable small talk, mixed with the odd flirtatious comment, which had been fine with Mattaius, the less he had to say, the less chance he had of opening his mouth and saying something that would ruin what he figured was a sure thing. Hell he hadn't even really had to dodge any bullets.

"So how do you feel about magic in general having just finished doing what you were doing?" She'd asked.

Bang.

A hundred negative responses begged release from Mattaius mouth but he quickly gained control of himself and casually said "I could do without it".

It hadn't seemed like the time to say what he really felt, that magic was a fountain of lies and the world was floating on bullshit.

Sheri had looked up at him thoughtfully for a second while biting her bottom lip in that way he would come to adore. Finally after what seemed to him like forever she smiled and said "Yeah, I kind of feel the same way."

Half way to her house she took his hand. He didn't resist. A block later they had their first kiss. They were half naked by the time the front door to her house snapped shut.

Mattaius and Sheri spent the next few weeks in a sexual fervor, their stamina seemed perfectly matched, and neither suffered terribly from inhibitions. They spent days and evenings venting long pent up passions on each other, neither of them holding back or asking for reprieve. Looking back on it, Mattaius supposed their sexual synchronicity was the reason they had lasted this long.

During the next two years they had inevitably and inadvertently become fixtures in each others lives. Casual sex became love making and pillow talk turned into long conversations. The extra toothbrush in the cabinet made way for a spare change of clothes in each others closets, which in turn evolved to "Your half of the closet and my half of the closet".

The word "love" never surfaced, nor did talk of the future, beyond "What do you want to do this weekend?" Partially because of the unspoken agreement between the two of them that as far as their relationship went "It is what it is", and partially because somewhere in the back of their minds they knew that they were too different to be together forever.

The arguing started a little after their first year, he couldn't remember what the first one had been about, only that like most of them, it was probably over something inane. They had never fought over anything of real consequence, it was simply a matter of personalities colliding. Within a month they had fallen into the clichéd vicious cycle of fight, ignore, make-up. True to the nature of their relationship, they did their making up in the bedroom, passion washing away conflict.

Mattaius knew he had not just become disillusioned with their relationship but with his life in general. His savings had been substantial enough that he hadn't had to look for employment during the time they'd been together. He'd told himself that after his time in the service he had a long vacation coming anyways, but the truth was he'd lost focus. He had lost track of what it was to have purpose in his life and he was beginning to show the signs of it both physically and mentally. His mood had become sullen, sometimes giving way to exaggerated forms of the overt cynicism that had at one point been his charm. He was turning into a bastard and he knew it.

His previously slender yet well toned (albeit scarred) military physic was slowly being replaced by an unfamiliar paunch, and when he looked at himself in the mirror, the chiseled lines of his ruggedly handsome face were becoming the soft round features of a stranger. Even his once piercing green eyes, seemed to be constantly puffy and bloodshot. More often than not, he felt like he was a prisoner in a body that decided it didn't like him anymore, and he couldn't help but wonder if the wavy black hair he had always been so proud of was going to turn grey out of spite.

He needed to get a fucking grip, and he realized the only one able to knock him out of his stupor was himself. As much as the thought repulsed him it was undeniable that he was only at peace with himself when he was doing what he did best, what he had been trained to do. In short, he needed to get back in the game. He marveled at how the truth can so often taste of shit.

"Matt? Where do we go from here?"

Her voice dragged Mattaius reluctantly out of his reverie and he dragged his gaze to Sheri's moist eyes.

"I think you know" was all he could say.

She nodded her head as she choked back a sob, the look in her eyes told him she understood. She hated it but she understood. He thought he could see something else there too, resignation.

They shared a moment of awkward silence.

Finally Sheri managed a weak smile and said "We've been through a lot in the last couple of years"

"Yeah"

Gingerly she reached across the table and took his hand. "I don't have any regrets"

"Me either"

He knew she was waiting for him to say something to ease the pain of the moment, something to give closure and purpose to what they had together. He wanted to give her what she needed but he drew a blank.

After a moment, Sheri removed her hand from his, leaned back in her chair, and gave another stronger smile. The expression in her eyes was slightly accusing.

"You're a hard man Mattaius Pitt"

It wasn't the first time he'd been told that.

Not able to think of another way to break the spell of the moment Mattaius got up and went to the fridge to grab a beer. Behind him he could hear Sheri get out of her chair as well, probably to get her coat and shoes in preparation for the drive back to her house.
He stood with his back to her and admired the twilight bathing the parking lot behind his apartment. For a moment he marveled at how the setting sun could make everything appear new. He wondered if he was making a new beginning or if he was killing something that could have been beautiful?

Behind him he could hear Sheri settle onto the small leather couch.

"One last thing" She said.

Her voice sounded strange given the circumstances and he turned around ready to say "Look, let's sleep on it and talk about it in the morning" but the words caught in his throat.

Sheri sat half reclined on the couch, her jeans and panties in a crumpled ball beside her. Her legs were spread wide and with her left hand she'd parted the shaved ivory lips of her pussy. Slowly and deliberately she ran the middle finger of her other hand up and down the pink lining of her moist cleft.

Mattaius froze, barely remembering that glass beer bottles shatter if you drop them on the floor.

Sheri looked at him through half open eyes, a familiar seductively wicked grin playing across her lips and said "Well? Are you going to come say goodbye properly or what?"

"Damn" he thought "Breaking up is hard to do"

I guess I should mention here, that I won't be posting Part six till friday. Partly because tomorrow is SPT and partly because it will probably take that long to write the next part.

I don't know if I like him, either.

I really like Terri from the antique/junk store.

Time will tell about Mattaius, I suppose.

Thanks Ashk :)

I guess I should have mentioned that the breakup mentioned here is happening ruffly around the same time as the incident in the Morgue.

This was a tough one to write.

I'm not sure if I like Mattaius. I understand him ok, I just don't know if he's very likeable.

I look forward to these daily, but you know that.

Great background piece, I have been wondering about Mattaius for a couple of days.
