I'm proud to be an Aussie, true-blue and all the rest. Australia - the Great South Land. I am PROUD to be an Australian.
This is not the pride you get from seeing your newborn child take its first steps - this is something else altogether. I love our style of democracy, where it is compulsory to vote, so that EVERYONE gets a say.
I proud of the way we can badmouth ANYONE we want, provided the accussations are factual.
I proud of the way Australia murders less people than ANY OTHER NATION in the world, in propertion to population.
I am proud of our religious freedoms, and freedom to express any point of view we see is fit.
I am proud of our army, and how they have done us proud in the only 100 years of our history.
I am proud of the fact that we have RESTRICTIONS on guns, so that little to no children (if at all) shoot themselves in the heads each day.
I am proud that in Australia, we have a fair system of Government, where there are open forums to discuss ANYTHING that the people dislike.
I am proud that we have NO international debt.
I am proud that we forgive Third World debt with no epectations of anything in return.
Above all, I love the flag.

Too many things to reply to...
I love living in this country, but I'm not going to apologise for something done before I was born, and was in the best interests of the aboriginals anyway.
They stopped the program and now look at the state of their culture now... "Got a dolla mut? Giv a ciggy to a bruva."
Pah! Get a job, or go back to the bloody desert. After the 60,000-80,000 years of culture we're crediting them with nowadays.. you'd think they would have developed more than a stick that comes back when you throw it and a stick that doesn't come back when you throw it.

Whoever said that difference between Australia and yoghurt joke- that was a hit below the belt. There is still a major cultural cringe- if someone asks me what my culture was i wouldnt know what to say. All i could say was my mum is Australian and my dad is Irish. Is that good enough?
And i hate the union jack! Australia needs to break free of UK ties (sorry no offonce intended)and become a republic! Please! The Union Jack was not the flag of the hardy convicts. Settlers didn't come to Australia to live under the Union Jack. They came here to escape it. It was the hated emblem of their jailers. The Union Jack was not the flag above the miners fighting for their rights at the Eureka Stockade. It was the banner of those who came to crush them. It didn't fly above Ned Kelly's house, but certainly flew above his gallows. We need to change! Please! Next referendum vote republic!
I mean, I love living in this country- a lucky country but what disturbs me most about it is:
I hate our timidity - the feeling that we're not really a sovereign nation and that England or America or anywhere but here is more real.
I hate our guilty silence - no matter what our Prime Minister says, the crimes and pain of the dispossession of indigenous Australia have not been reconciled and the more that truth is denied the more defensive and selfishly aggressive we seem to become.
I hate the feeling that the most important value in our society is money.(not just our country im sure)
I hate that we keep wiping out our collective memory by pulling down our built environment and destroying the natural one - are we so frightened by the past?
I hate the wall that we're building around us.
We need to change...

My Country
Dorothea McKellar
The love of field and coppice, of green and shaded lanes,
Of ordered woods and gardens is running in your veins.
Strong love of grey-blue distance, brown streams and soft, dim skies-
I know but cannot share it, my love is otherwise.
I love a sunburnt country, a land of sweeping plains,
Of ragged mountain ranges, of droughts and flooding rains.
I love her far horizons, I love her jewel-sea,
Her beauty and her terror- the wide brown land for me!
The stark white ring-barked forests, all tragic to the moon,
The sapphire-misted mountains, the hot gold hush of noon,
Green tangle of the brushes where lithe lianas coil,
And orchids deck the tree-tops, and ferns the warm dark soil.
Core of my heart, my country! Her pitiless blue sky,
When, sick at heart, around us we see the cattle die -
But then the grey clouds gather, and we can bless again
The drumming of an army, the steady soaking rain.
Core of my heart, my country! Land of the rainbow gold,
For flood and fire and famine she pays us back threefold.
Over the thirsty paddocks, watch, after many days,
The filmy veil of greenness that thickens as we gaze.
An opal-hearted country, a wilful, lavish land -
All you who have not loved her, you will not understand -
Though earth holds many splendours, wherever I may die,
I know to what brown country my homing thoughts will fly.
We still have a LOT of work to do with our indigenous people.
I say SORRY.

How much are you fined if you dont vote?
---------------
I didn't vote in a state election a few years back, and in the voting pamphlets the fine was about $50 AUD, about 35-40$ USD these days, but only $25USD with the dollar as it was then. Then again, hardly anyone is actually fined, it is just a threat to encourage people to vote. It is like cheating on taxes, they only thoroughly audit 1 profession every year, so the odds are you will get away with it, but there is still a chance you will get in shit.
Also, there is no point comparing Aboriginals to African Americans. The aboriginal's situation is more like that of the American Indian's, ie: land stolen by British, etc. Technically we should be paying them rent for living in their country, so people shouldn't really bitch about how much the government gives to them, which isn't as much as people assume. World vision classifies parts of Aboriginal populated areas in Central Australia as third world, you can sponser a child there just as you would sponsor a starving child in Ethiopia.

OK, in the US, their ethnic minortiy groups are a lot worse off than ours. This is a clarification for CountNoCount... Although I have no idea wether or not that -2 is his IQ or his opinion of my post...
------------
The above statement only succeeded in further confusing my simple American mind. You're clarifying what was already a rather simple statement by restating the original statement? When someone clarifies a point, he usually does so by expounding upon said point, often by the use of anecdotes, examples, statistics, etc. I must reiterate that I did not dislike the post; I only disliked the glibness of the statement concerning race in America. That sort of thing irritates me.
Anyway, there's no need to retaliate - good post, yada yada yada. Here's a peace offering:
Traveling in a fried-out combie
On a hippie trail, head full of zombie
I met a strange lady, she made me nervous
She took me in and gave me breakfast
And she said,
"Do you come from a land down under?
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."
Buying bread from a man in Brussels
He was six foot four and full of muscles
I said, "Do you speak-a my language?"
He just smiled and gave me a vegemite sandwich
And he said,
"I come from a land down under
Where beer does flow and men chunder
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."
Lying in a den in Bombay
With a slack jaw, and not much to say
I said to the man, "Are you trying to tempt me
Because I come from the land of plenty?"
And he said,
"Oh! Do you come from a land down under? (oh yeah yeah)
Where women glow and men plunder?
Can't you hear, can't you hear the thunder?
You better run, you better take cover."

My source for my claim that Aus murders less people than any other nation is factual and comes from the ABC (www.abc.net.au).

you said
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"I proud of the way Australia murders less people than ANY OTHER NATION in the world, in propertion to population."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
Firstly, you spelled proportion wrong.
This is not true, New Zealand has a lower homicide rate(per person).
Then you said
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"I am proud that we have NO international debt."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is also false, Australia has $329.8Billion foreign debt
finally you said
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
"I proud of the way we can badmouth ANYONE we want, provided the accussations are factual."
-----------------------------------------------------------------------
This is not true, you cant bad mouth a woman for being a woman, its a factual claim, but its harrasment.
Do some research before you go announcing something, you give false information, and you make us all look ignorant.

What I hate about Australia is John Howard, who would jump off a bridge if Bush asked him to.
Also, they didn't enforce much censorship on the GTA series. The only difference in GTA3 was you couldn't get prostitutes into your car to restore your health. Meanwhile, the uncensored version was pretty easy to obtain, as was Postal II, which was supposedly completely banned here.
