When it comes to consensual sex between a man and woman of legal age the responsibility of condom usage is completely on the woman. This is not to say that a man should not take up this responsibility himself and enforce "safe sex". I believe that every man should, however that does not retract from the fact that at the end of the day it is on the woman. I'm sure many of you uberladies (and lads) are getting you -2 trigger fingers ready, but read the rest before doing so.
What do condoms do?
1) Lower the risk of pregnancy.
2) Lower the risk of STD infection.
I think we can all agree with the two above statements. Let's look at the first two items.
Pregnancy (specifically unwanted pregnancy in this case) is a huge ordeal. It will change the lives of all the people involved, and in most cases people not directly involved. Yes there is the morning after pill and abortion, but lets say that due to whatever reason (religion, health, personal feelings) these two forms of after post-conception pregnancy protection are not possible.
However the person most directly affected by pregnancy is the woman. A woman can't run from pregnancy, she can't move to a different country, she can't hide. She HAS to deal with the consequences of her actions. She has to deal with the baby that will be born. The man on the other hand doesn't. I'm sure many of you have heard tales of guys never paying child support, and never being there for their children. The reason that you all have heard these things is because it DOES happen. Men do run, men do leave. Ladies, if you get pregnant you are the one who will have to deal with it.
STD infection on the other hand affects both men and woman. If we look at statistics, both men and women have equal levels of STD infection. (In the US it's around 1 in 4 people dependant on age and region.) However these statistics are misleading. In a single encounter it's actually woman who have a higher level of STD contraction than men.
This is because of the way our reproductive systems work. Women have a much higher chance of STD infected fluid coming into contact with blood, through microscopic cuts, or tears than a man does. The skin on the penis is much stronger and elastic that the inner vaginal wall.
These above facts help to prove that in a sexual encounter a woman has much more to lose than a man. Due to this, it's a woman's responsibility to enforce the use of protection to lower her risks. If she doesn't she is the one to blame for pregnancy and STD infection, because it was HER and HER alone that didn't take responsibility for her actions.
The reason I write this is because of the countless times I have heard (in HS, college, afterwards) of girl's talking about unprotected sex they have had, and rationalizing it with, "He didn't have a condom." Well guess what honey, when you get knocked up, or the fucking HIV that excuse isn't going to do you a whole lot of good.
Ladies go out and buy condoms. Have them within close reach of the bed. Make sure you make your guy use them. Don't expect men to do any of that. Or else you have no one to blame but yourself.

While I admit that women may have more to lose having unprotected sex, it is an equal responsibility of both parties to make sure they are safe. And any female that wouldn't: a) buy her own condoms or b) refuse to have sex without one...deserves to get an itchy cooter STD. Any woman who rationalizes having sex sans rubber because her man didn't have one has obviously never enjoyed a good evening of outercourse.

Your reasoning is bollocks and, more importantly, uneccesary. There is a good reason why women should purchase condoms (in big, big, boxes) and that is for the simple reason that it's almost always better to go back to the woman's home for sex.
The man's bedroom can be messy and/or have sheets covered in roy. Probably lives with dickheads.
The woman's bedroom can be messy but will almost certainly not have sheets covered in roy and even if they're covered in menstruel fluid, men find that apealing.

Theoretically the arguments are good. In an ideal world but lets face it. It isn't so ideal and people don't have as many morals and values as our grandparents. But the bottom line is that some men (not as noble/responsible/humane as Smurfs) are just jerks. Sometimes we as women make bad choices in men and can be led astray (if that's an excuse). End up with some jerk and wham you've been stuck. Why risk it? It's not worth the hassle, when it can be avoided.

But by the same token there are a decent amount of women in this world that don't give a shit about their kids - and remember that you don't have to be an absentee to be a bad parent. As with everything, it works both ways - lets not beat up on men by suggesting, however covertly, that they're more likely not to give a fuck about their kids than women. There's a lot of truth in what you're saying, and the sentiment behind the post is a practical one, but I don't think you've thought this through as well as you could have.
While it's true that women potentially have more to lose from unprotected sex than men, you failed to take into account that there are also more 'defence mechanisms' available to women than there are to men - condoms, several varieties of pill, implants, IUD, morning after pill, abortion etc. What have men got? Precious little in comparision.
My problem with this post is the implicit value judgement you make about the differences between the male and female character. You dismiss the morning after pill and abortion out of hand --note that two of your three reasons (religion, health, personal feelings) are psychological, and yet you seem to imply that there are no psychological repercussions to "never paying child support, and never being there for their children" etc. Not all men are hard-hearted bastards who wouldn't feel even a pang of guilt or confusion on learning that they had brought an unwanted child into this world and I think you're doing the male population a serious diservice with this attitude. Yes, of course men can run away from the situation much more easily than women - but at what cost to themselves? I find it hard to believe that not even one man would feel like a total shit for doing that. Indeed, I have male friends trapped in unwanted relationships by girls who deliberatly got themselves pregnant to prolong it. Why? No, not because they're pussies, but because they're nice people who are trying to make the best of a bad situation and not punish the children who are blameless in the whole affair.
The bottom line is, if you have unprotected sex and you get pregnant/catch an STD then you have only yourself to blame. Nobody, neither male nor female, should be playing the odds - because it will catch up with you eventually and when it does I'll have no sympathy for you.
I'd say a woman who has unprotected sex is much more of a moron than a man who does the same, but this in no way equates to women having a greater responsibility to use condoms than their male counterparts.

I think we just have a different perspective on the situation. If I got a woman pregnant I would think that I have as much to lose as she does. While I'm pro-choice (I hate that word), on a personal level I would never want my own child aborted, though I would side with the woman's decision, although offer to raise it myself if need be.

Smurfs, what your not seeing is that your view on pregnancey is not held by every guy that walks down the street. For some men the impact of getting a girl preganant can be nothing if he so chooses. A woman (in the sitation im describing, abortion is not an option) does not have that choice.
A man can always choose wether he wants to deal with it or not. A woman cannot. Therefore a woman has a higher responbility to prevent such a thing from happening. (This is of course taking into account that the woman does not want to have to be pregnant, which is a basis of my argument.)

I agree that women need to take responsibillity for having safe sex, but they do not need to take MORE responsibillity than men.
The problem with your argument is that it reinforces the old idea of women as the gatekeepers of sexuality---that it's up to the woman to say "no," to resist, and to set limits. Both partners need to be responsible for their health. Both partners need to be able to voice their desires, and both partners need to be able to say "whoa...that's not going to fly" when the need be.
The reason that legal birth control and abortion were/are so revolutionary is that they give women the freedom from the "consequence" of unplanned pregnancy. They let women fuck like men---without fear of getting pregnant. This has allowed us to take on a whole new approach to sex and freed us up a great deal. It's a very very important freedom to be able to have access to affordable birth control.
The problem comes when women and men who are enjoying our society's newfound sexual freedom don't also take into account that with freedom comes responsibillity. In order to fuck freely, you must USE the tools that allowed us to do so in the first place---birth control and/or disease protection. And just like when you were a kid and your Mom said "if you aren't responsible I'll take away your privledges," if people aren't responsible they'll wind up with a pregnancy or a disease that inhibits their enjoyment of their sexuality.
It's not all on the women. But it's not all on the guy either.

When it comes down to it, you're right.
If it were a normal healthy relationship Smurfs would be right, as then it would be both parties responsibility if they truly cared for one another.
If a woman goes out and gets shitty drunk and hooks up with Random Dude and she gets knocked up, then it's her own stupid fault for thinking someone that would have a night stand with her would also be considerate enough to make sure she was still be healthy/unknocked up post one night stand.

Safe sex is the man and the woman's responsiblity. Yes, women should take an active role in making sure this happens. Like having condoms and whatever else is needed around and accessible. But, the man should also have condoms with him, and be regularly tested for STDs.

Absolutely.
Interesting point about STDs, lots of STDs that are easily curable in men, can do permanant damage to a women, because men's plumbing is on the outside and women's is internal. There are even STDs that men can carry, but cannot be infected with. That means he's contagious, and has no way of knowing it because he'll never have any symptoms, but you sure as hell will when he infects you.
