Being a Brit (that's got to earn me a -2 straight away) I've only recently found the joy that is comic books.

I used to read 2000 AD when I was a kid but had no idea of the wealth of goodness that America provides on the comic book front.

So now at the tender age of twenty eight I have rediscovered comic books.
I've spent the last 3 or 4 months reading comic books almost constantly and have came up with a list of must reads.

Tell me if I'm wrong:
(which I assume I will be as almost everything as I've yet to even read any Marvel comics).

1. The Batman

This guy kicks serious arse. Long Halloween is probably my favourite. If Batman Begins is anything like Year One it will shit all over the previous Batman films. The Dark Knight Returns is a masterpiece if only to see Bats take it to Supes.

2. Preacher

Only read the first two volumes so far but it is fucking brilliant. Any comic that has a character with a face like an arse is got to be worth a read.

3. Sandman

Halfway through the series and it's all good so far. Bit concerned that he looks like the lead singer from the Cure.

4. Y Last Man

I don't know what it is about this series but I'm liking it. Think of the amount of birds you could shag if you were the last man on earth.........the possibilities.

5. Green Arrow

I started reading the Kevin Smith TPB's and continued from there. Ollie is the man.

6. Watchmen

Kind of goes without saying but no list is complete without this in it. Rest assured the film adaptation will be utter shite.

So that's my half dozen comics that I think everyone must read.

I've got 100 Bullets and Animal Man waiting on the bench for me to read next.

I can't believe it's taken me so long to realise that comics are the shit.

So what have I missed out?

Tell me Uber, I need some American guidance - you guys grow up with this, I didn't.

Lone Wolf and Cub

Lone Wolf 2100 ( I norlly avoid "reimaginings" but this one is the buisness)

I just finished the second trade of planetary (fourth man) and warren ellis is a fucking god. Hellblazer not what I expected (started the first ennis arc without dillon, son of man, I thinks) It's just not what I thought it was. I also finished up the latest (27) Y the last man, great fucking book.

Just read the second Sandman TPB "The Dolls House"
Thought it was pretty poor.

Bought some issues of "The Dreaming", quite enjoyed them.
Is the series generally good or is it patchy as I noticed that each story seems to be a different writer.

Garth Ennis
Pretty much anything Vertigo

Oh dear.
maybe work with Johhny Depp in the titular role?
Or maybe not.

Just read Superman: Red Son.
Enjoyed it a lot, which is saying something as I think Superman is generally a pussy.

Good post.

Also, what are people's thoughts on Punisher? I saw the movie (mate brought it back from turkey, cost him the equivalent of £2.50) and it kicked ultimate arse, but i was wondering about the comics. Another also (sorry), are there any places where I could get the Punisher comics in some form, in Reading (UK).

Thanks in advance
====

Whoah whoah whoah, you're in Reading? Well that makes four of us so far. Try upstairs in the bookshop in Friar Street - I forget what it's called, but it's near HMV. Also, there's a comic shop on that road opposite the Butts, near where the old cinema used to be.

As for Punisher, it's not the best thing I've ever read, but certainly worth a look. Find the one where he punches out a polar bear.

He did Daredevil, and a load of movie tie ins. (Jay & Silent Bob, Clerks, Chasing Dogma, Bluntman and Chronic, and issue 1, and 12 of oni double feature) If your a Kevin Smith movie fan (as am I) you have to read those. I'm not real sure what, if anything, else he has done.

Clerks is just three one shot issues (lost scene, holiday special, and the comic book). They are just like extra scenes to the movie. (holiday special is my favorite of the set)

Chasing dogma is a 4 shot deal, which bridges chasing amy to dogma (explains the ape, and why they were in pitt)

I've not read Bluntman and Chronic yet, so I don't know about it. Same with Jay & Silent bob.

Each is availible as a trade paper back. As I said above, if your kevin smith fan, pick them up.

You don't need to go to the states to buy comics.

There are plenty of British-based online stores to pillage for all recent publications:

http://www.kryptoncomics.com/
http://www.comix-shop.co.uk/
http://www.comicana.com/
http://www.comics24-7.co.uk/

Those are the four places I checkout for back issues and new releases.

But if you're looking for tradepaperbacks then try these:

Hellboy: Seed of Destruction by Mike Mignola & John Byrne
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen by Alan Moore & Kevin O'Neil
Hellblazer: Dangerous Habits by Garth Ennis & William Simpson
Superman: Red Son by Mark Millar, David Johnson & Kilian Plunkett

Another question that I should have asked in my post.

I'm in DC, Boston and NYC in October.

Which will provide me with an excellent chance of buying lots of comics.
Anyone got any suggestions of good stores in those areas I could visit?

I found Midtown comics website for NYC but don't know any other stores at all.

Ok, random thoughts:

Preacher is fucking fantastic.

V for Vendetta is seriously over-rated to my mind - I can imagine that at it's time it was fantastic, but it reads very dated now.

Transmetropolitan - Clearly this is the best series of GN's ever, or I wouldn't have taken my name from it

Everyone's always telling me to read The Invisibles but I dipped into the first one and didn't have a fucking clue what was going on. If you read that, explain it to me.

Sandman - classic

Hellblazer - anyone who hasn't read Hellblazer deserves a beating. It's pure quality

Sin City - again, if you havent, you need beating.

Good calls.

1) Scud: The disposable assassin
2) Preacher (Totally agree, Ennis rocks)
3) Theives and Kings
4) Stray Bullets

I have many more, but I'm going to have to go through my old collections... thanks for giving me an excuse!

Being quite the cartoon connoisseur, it's pretty sad that I've never been much into comic books...

...but one stands out in my mind. It always will. Forever and ever.

Johnny the Homocidal Maniac.

It's pure genius.

I agree with Batman. I mean, he's probably one of the only realisitic comic book characters out there...Other than that, I know nothing about comic books.

You need some spawn. Now THAT dude was a badass, and The Uncanny X-Men come in second. X-men Rock.

The only reason I'm giving this a 2, rather than a 1 is because you have a Boston Red Sox hat in the Picture. GO SOX WOO!!!!!

V for Vendetta: About a hundred times cooler than 100 bullets. As a brit, you'll love it even more.

Homer: You know what?

Grampa: What?

Homer: We're both screw-ups.
