I have recently come to a realization.
Some of you hate me because I am an American.
I don't know why.
I don't know if it's because I am an American, or if you hate me because I am part of a country that has the policies that we do. I don't know if you hate me because I live in the land of "The American Dream", I don't know if you hate me because of who our president is, I don't know if you hate me because I chose to serve my country.
I just don't know. I know I don't hate you, and I know my family doesn't. I know my friends don't hate you. But I know that you hate me.
Because I am an American.
I know many people did not agree with the war in Iraq. That we "invaded a sovereign country, took it over, and imposed a government on it." Well, that is very much what we did, so it shouldn't be in quotation marks should it? I know we did it without the U.N. I know we did it without the worlds approval.
I also know that Saddam is a fucking asshole. I know he killed hundreds of thousands of people, because they were different from him and what he believed. I also know that he can't kill any more people. I know that is a good thing.
I know that right now, U.S. soldiers are fighting to keep Iraq out of the hands of people like him. Be it for oil, for gold, for riches, or for right, they are still doing it. And I know they don't have a choice about the matter. I know that over 1,000 U.S. soldiers have died, fighting a war that people don't believe in, doing what they are told without having a choice. I know we went to war with Iraq because of "WMD's", and that we haven't found any. I also know that the intelligence departments of 3 countries believed they had weapons of mass destruction. I also know that the governments of several other countries said they were trying to develop them.
But we went in without the UN, either because our government believed it was right, or because our government wanted cheaper oil, or whatever your belief about the matter might be.
I think that may be why you hate me. I don't really know. I know you have been screaming "Fuck America, and fuck Americans! They only care about themselves!" I think it's funny how it is so easy to generalize about every American, and how we only care about ourselves. I think it's funny that being American isn't a good thing. I think it's funny that people on this website say "It would be better if America was colonized again." I think it is hilarious how Canadians on this website put Americans down anytime a post about America is put up. I think it is funny that we are generalized to be a people who are overall unintelligent, uneducated, and uninformed.
I think it is hilarious that when a post that says "Why I love America" is put up, most people from other countries feels the need to blast it with -2's about how much America sucks.
I LOVE AMERICA. I love it because I can go online and look at anything I want, and not have to worry about if it is filtered or not. I love America because my ancestors fought it for. I love America because it is the land of the "American Dream", even if that dream is quickly going away. I love it because we have the ability to choose whether or not we want to join the military. I love America because we have brave people willing to say, "Yes, I am willing to go to war, even if it means I die. Yes, I understand, that even though I am only joining for college money, I still might have to go to war".
I love America because of the fact that I can be absolutely in love with a Filipino, and only be looked down upon by rednecks in white sheets. I love America because it is their right to look down on me, and to wear white sheets.
I love America because of Wegmans, Because of Nick Tahoe's Garbage Plates, and because of Tom Wahl's homemade root beer. I love America because we have a racing series that came from running alcohol. I love America because if I wanted to, I could quit my job, get on a plane, and go live on the beach and become a surfer, and I wouldn't have to answer to anyone. I've always wanted to learn how to surf. I love America because I can.
I love America because I can go across the border to the north and see how things are in a different country, without having to get a passport. I love America because we are smart enough to see that hockey is awesome, and we are smart enough to put it on TV, and we are smart enough to create a Hockey Channel, and that it only costs 3.95 a month to have, and you get a bunch of other sport channels too.
I love America because we threw such a fit over the "tit seen 'round the world", yet the very next day I saw some old lady's tit on ER, and nobody said a damn thing.
I love America because we can drink cold Canadian beer, we can drink cold Australian beer, because we can drink German, British, Chinese and Irish beer, but still, Yingling rules all.
I love America because we think we are the goddamn best country on the face of the planet, even if we are not. I love the fact that even though sometimes, things don't go the right way, and sometimes we screw up horribly, and sometimes we go against the world and everyone hates us, that we still are proud of who we are and where we come from.
I love America because it is my home. I love America because that's who I am. I am an American, and I will scream it in ANY country, in ANY land, in ANY PLACE ACROSS THE MOTHER FUCKING WORLD.
I love the fact that if I did go to some countries, and if I DID scream that out, I would be shot. I would be drug through the streets and hung from a bridge. I love the fact that I would be tortured, I would be killed, and I would be maimed.
Because I am an American.
I love the fact that if I went to other countries, and I did scream that out, I would be scorned. I would be belittled, insulted, and laughed at. I would be made fun of. I could be beaten up, just for having love for my country. I would be ridiculed, for loving my home. For thinking my home is the best god damn country on the face of the planet, simply because it is my home. Because of my opinion.
Because I am an American.
I love the fact that some people might look at this post and just give it a -2 because of the title, or because I say that I love America. I love the fact that I am called retarded, stupid, fat, and uncaring. I love the fact that I am called this because of where I come from.
Because I am an American.
I love the fact that the people calling me retarded, stupid, fat, uncaring, and wrapped up in my American media propaganda, will do so because of where I come from, and ONLY because of where I come from.
Because I am an American.
I let them call me stupid, fat, and lazy, and I let them tell me that I am ignorant of other cultures, and do not accept their ways, and that I need to learn about other countries and stop listening to my American Propaganda, and that I need to realize that America sucks and that we are ruining the world, and that all Americans are fat, stupid, and lazy, that all we care about is money, and that we don't give a FUCK about anyone but ourselves, and that I have some sort of complex.
I love the fact that they call me these things, because of where I come from, because I love America.

The thing that is so horrible about 9/11, is that it
a) was a terrorist attack, against TWO Civilian buildings. On purpose.
b) had over 3,000 CIVILLIAN casualities, many who were fire fighters and police officers who were trying to SAVE lives.
Comparing 9/11 to the military bombing of serbia, kroatia, Iraq, Afghanistan, is like comparing apples and oranges.
Umm... The people of Hiroshima, Nagasaki, Kobe and Dresden would probably have an issue with this comment. But not being an ignorant or poorly educated person, you would know this and how hypocritical your comment was, right?
Before pointing the bone at people and telling them why they don't like you, look at your actions.

What you must understand is that in America, it's highly thought of to be proud. In America.
In my country (and most of the world), most people would rather stick a fork in their eye rather than go on and on about what they think about themselves. For most of us it's considered the hight of rudeness, it's impolite and intolerably boorish.
I have been to the US on numerous occasions, and I love it - so much so I would happily live there for a while. No hate here, but loads of concern about the Government, which a lot of "patriotic" Americans choose to overlook at their own peril. I must say I *hate* the blind faith so many of your compatriots have in your government. It's silly, to say the least. I digress...
You have to understand, though, that the majority of people on the planet are sickened to their stomachs at this kind of rambling self aggrandisement. Put it this way: don't fart in my face and call it pot pourri. If you aggressively piss me off, don't act surprised when I am not happy.
It's time you learned the truth - while YOU in the US think this kind of rant is OK, you are pretty much on your own.
The rest of the world considers it obnoxious. You have been told and warned, don't complain again.

The top 3 reasons people hate Americans:
1. They blame their own problems on "America stealing their national treasures". Often times less than 1 in 4 foreign-run job sites in a country are American yet America gets all the blame for their wrongs.
2. They view America as meddling in their own private affairs. That is true to a large extent.
3. The jealousy factor. People can hate the rich and extremely successful when they are doing so badly. "Those greedy Americans won't send me a cut of their money". Look at how people hate the Jews. What they don't realize is that Americans don't have to give anyone any of their wealth and also that Americans are not selfish with their money.

I am British and i love America too, mostly because it has pretty much the same values as we on this once great island do. I also love it because you will stand and be counted in a fight for what you believe is right, something i regard highly when selecting my allies - as as i often do!!

I have the freedom to move between canada and the US freely, because I am an american citizen. I can download music too, without the RIAA coming to get me... If I was downloading Canadian music, made by a canadian singer, with a canadian record label. My question to you is, are you downloading american music, or another countries? Not only that, but I still download music. I'm not truly worried about it. Hundreds of thousands of people do it. They so far have pressed charges against about 700 people.
Handguns are registered in America. Not rifles or shotguns, just handguns.
As far as who has more freedom, this wasn't what the post is about. It's about how people automatically assume because I am an american, I am uneducated, lazy, fat, and arrogant.

Wow, runninginplace, you totally nailed my ass. Yeah. Somehow I think you completely glazed over the fact that my point was they CAN'T poll everyone. I do think you missed the other point (maybe it was a bit to subtle for your simple mind). I'll clarify for you. The other point was that out of a large populace, only a select few are polled and therefore cannot be considered a true representation. While I'm at it, I'll add something to this; the questions that are given in any poll are themselves biased. Let's stick to the example of the war. The question asked would be something along the lines of "Would you rather A)Invade Iraq or B)Let Saddam rape you children?" Yes, I'm exaggerating, but the point is, just in case you missed it the first time, only two sentences ago, is that the questions asked are meant to get the answers that those asking the questions want.
Oh, and thank you for ever so original insult. I will take it to heart and cry myself to sleep tonight.

Something like 30 reviews ago, people were arguing about 80% of Americans supporting the war last year. Those that were arguing that this is a true number, did you ever stop to think about how biased numbers like that are. They take a couple hundred people, poll them and call it a fair representaion of the population's opinion. I know I was never asked what I thought. I mean crime statistics are one thing to go by, but when it comes to opinion polls, there is absolutely no way for the numbers to be close to accurate unless every single person in the country is questioned, and that's not going to happen. So don't going around quoting 80% of all Americans supporteed the war. That's the biggest pile of bull I've heard. There was never THAT much support for the war... maybe for the soldiers, but those are two different issues.

The reason that it seems like Americans only care about their own soldiers is that the basic nationalistic approach to casualties and deployments is exacerbated by the prevalence of American media sources. All over the world, you can tap into the American media because it's achieved a certain amount of permeance. And of COURSE any media source is going to focus on the soldiers and actions of it's country of origin. It's not that we don't respect the contributions of thousands and thousands of non-American military personnel not only in Iraq but all over the globe, but just as you are more concerned with the fate of <Your Country Here>'s soldiers, we are concerned for our boys and girls first and foremost. We cry and pray for EVERYONE fighting overseas and at home, but the American flags on the US soldiers' sleeves tie us to them just a little bit closer. I do not believe that you honestly care about all soldiers in the same way that you care about those from your home country. It might not be a big difference, and it might not be something you are proud of, but it's a simple instinct. It's nothing to be ashamed of.

This might not apply to you but why is that americans only seem to acknowledge the U.S soldiers fighting in Iraq ? There are plenty of British soldiers over there too. And I don't know if I'm right but I would've thought that alot of the American soldiers over there are based over here too. Places like Sandhurst etc. Personally I don't believe in the war in Iraq but I do believe that I would like all the British and American soldiers to come back home alive and to be able to see their families again.
I fully agree. I've often said that I respect all warriors, be they american, british, or Iraqi. There is something to be said about people who are willing to lay down their lives for their cause.
As far as not mentioning any british soilders or any of the other soldiers, it's not that I don't have any respect for them, and it is definitly not that I don't want them to come home safe, it's more along the lines of this post was dealing stricly with the US, so I focused on that.

I think he did a good job with 9/11, but he screwed up with Iraq. Some people think he screwed up both. Others thing he did both just fine.
But to blame us for our representative is wrong.

From what I've been told, the french had backdoor dealings with Saddam. I can't quite remember where I heard it, but I know there were several sources.
The french didn't want the money they were getting to stop rolling in. I beleave it was for raw materials, including things that could be used to make weapons.
That's just what I have heard though, and I may very well be wrong.

Let me say I really didn't laugh in someones face saying "I'm American! HAHA!"
They usually say "Hi. Where are you from?" I would say "I'm American." And their reaction would go from friendly to not wanting anything to do with me. Then I would smile or laugh a bit when I realized they didn't like this fact. What the hell am I suppose to do about it? Cry? Say "I wish I wasn't American." and denounce my citizenship and move to Madagascar?

Ok. I'll go first.
My father lived in Toronto for 6 months while he was a kid. My grandfather had gotten a really good job, and he moved the family up there.
a week and a half later, my Father (12) his oldest brother (14) and my aunt (15) were in the hospital. They were saying that my aunt would never walk again. They didn't know if my uncle would survive because of the swelling in his brain. My father would permanintly have pain in his back.
They beat them with sticks, boards, bats, and a metal bar. They pulled my unconcious father by his feet for a distance of about 20 feet, his face rubbing into the dirt. My uncle was hit in the face and head by a metal pipe. My aunt was beaten by guys, not girls. Someone jumped on her back so hard and repeatedly that you could see that the brusies were literally caused by shoes.
The attack lasted roughly 2 minutes until the people who saw it finally got off their asses and realized it wasn't kids playing around. They reported to police that at first they thought it was just boys being boys, that they thought it was just rough housing. Then they saw my father being dragged away, with a thin trail of blood, and they saw the bats. The broke it up, and called the police. Three weeks later my father and aunt identified them in pictures. The 9 kids that jumped my family were sent to jail for quite some time. When my uncle finally got out of the hospital, they moved right away. Back into the old apartment, back into the old neighborhood, and back into the old job. Back to the good old USA.
The witnesses reported to the police that the attackers were heard to say things like "Fucking americans, go back to your own country!" and "Fucking yankees!"
I Honestly don't care if you beleave me or not. As far as I am concerned, causing my uncle to be in the hospital for 6 months, my aunt to have life long mental problems, and my father to have life long pain, is more important then someone calling you frenchie.
Do I judge all Canadians, because a few put people I love in the hospital?
Nope. I know that the actions of few do not equal the actions of the whole. You can call shenanigans on it, I know it's true and that is all that matters to me.

I was recently called a "typical" american, and when asked for further clairfication he said, to be exact, I was "a lazy, stupid son of a bitch with no idea how the world really runs." He continued to say that I was a "racist redneck asshole" who thought I was "better then everyone else", who should "shut his mouth before he had it shut for him." He then continued on to say that I should go to the back of the line, before "I break your face in front of all your fat american freinds."
When I turned to ignore him, he said I was a "Coward, who didn't have the balls to defend himself because I was too busy wondering when the next shipment of Ho Ho's was coming in."
He also called my baby's momma a "stupid american chink bitch", and my 1 year old son a "typical american baby: Fat, stupid and ugly."
Why?
Because I joined my family in line to go walk under the falls, after going to buy a soda. He though I was cutting in line.
That was just last weekend. I had a tourist ask me how to get to the George Eastman house When I went to get my lunch. I told him I didn't know, because I don't live in the city, I live south of the city. No what he said when he walked away?

I'm from Massachusetts, and I am part Algonquin Indian, actually my family is directly descendent from John Rolfe and the famed Pocahontas.
My boyfriend hails from the Dakota's and we recently went there for a family reunion. On the way the there he told me, do not mention that I am part indian because he didn't want to listen to the comments. Fine, so I kept my mouth shut about something that I am rather proud of....but the comments that I had to endure from his "superior" family members nearly sent me on a rampage. And when I finally got to witness firsthand how these people were forced to live and the squalor on the reservations, it actually makes me ashamed to say I am an american at times.

Damn, people let it go already. Though I am from America and I love it, I have been to other countries and to put it simply, every country, place, hovel or what have you has their good points and their bad points. We can all point out each other shortcomings until the cows come home but it doesn't change a thing. People and their attitudes make a culture, and some can understand others beliefs, values and ideals and other's can't. Some people can take it all in stride and accept and some can't. Bottom line until you fix the problems within your own country and step up to change the attitudes and stereotypes, you shouldn't comment on it.
For example, here we are in America and we bash our own people ...the people who were here first, the Native Americans. It astounds me the racial prejudice towards them that goes on in states out in the midwest like South Dakota. Or take a look at the Southern states and the way they bash blacks and Yanks. These are things that are not something to love or to be proud of....and until we solve our own internal crisis, we have no right to judge others in the world and vice versa.
