TRUE STORY: I was kicked out of my grandmother's house (552 hits)

"Fine. Maybe I will. Maybe we BOTH will! We are!" I yelled as she walked away from me. The anger and tension were palapable. I had never had my grandmother yell at me like that. My anxiety was also obvious. I went into the downstairs guest room and told my crying sister that it was time to go. As she nodded, sobbing, and began to get her things back into her suitcase, I wondered where we were going. I continued pondering that question as I went into the upstairs guest bedroom and began to repack my own suitcase. I knew I only had a few things to pack, so I had to think quick. The next leg of our vacation road-trip was to head to Burnet, only a few hours away, but we had just picked up my great-grandmother from her nursing home and we had promised to spend the evening with her. The solution dawned on me as I finished zipping my suitcase: a hotel. We could get a cheap hotel. La Quinta accepts dogs, and they have handicapped rooms available for my great-grandmother. I slunk down the stairs with my suitcase in tow and headed to the guest bedroom. On my way there, I passed my grandmother. I saw surprise flash across her face as she saw the suitcase in my hands and realized that I was dead serious about the dog.

The dog. She was what we were arguing over in the first place. This three month old bitch was the reason my sister and I were getting kicked out of our grandmother's house. The house that belonged to the same grandmother I had called "my favorite" just the day before. The irony was almost unbearable. This "favorite" grandmother was throwing a hissy-fit because the puppy, not yet completely house-broken, had made a mess in her living room. I didn't understand what the problem was. She knew the puppy wasn't fully trained yet and needed some work. She was aware of that fact when she agreed to have us come visit. I know she was aware of it because I had talked to her about it. But when she began to yell at my 15-year old sister for an offence committed by her puppy, something snapped inside me and I began to yell at her. At first, we were talking, trying to decide the sleeping arrangements, then, when I was adamant that the dog was not staying the night outside since the climate was so drastically different, the yelling began. I wasn't yelling at first, it was only my grandmother. Then, when my crying sister walked into the room and my grandmother began to get into her, well, it was then that I began to yell back. I would not sit there and let her make my sister feel any worse about what had already happened, especially since she had already taken care of it. It was when I returned volume for volume that my grandmother suggested that we leave her house, "if [we had] that little respect for [her] things."

So... we did. We left. We got a hotel room. We stayed there with my great-grandmother overnight, playing cards and watching TV and eating pizza, and took her back to her nursing home in the morning. My sister and I then took the short drive to Burnet, where we are staying now, and I haven't spoken with my grandmother since. My mother, on the other hand, has spoken with my grandmother, her mother. Apparently that conversation didn't go too well, either. I don't have all the details of it, but my mother said that she called her mother a "chicken-shit" and that my grandmother hung up on her.

The end result is that I am sitting in Burnet, online, with some things I was intending to return to my grandmother (but didn't get a chance to return, since we were kicked out of her house), and writing this story for all of you to read. It is true, the details may be a little off since it has been almost two days since it happened, but the highlights are all there. So, tell me Uber, where did I go wrong? My grandmother knew about the dog to begin with, there was no damage done, I was very polite-if firm-until she began to yell at my sister, and still we ended up being kicked out of her house. What happened? Was it my fault, do you think? Or is she just menopausal? Help me Uber, help me to understand the events of a few days ago. Make me see the light and show me how I can salvage the remains of my relationship with my grandmother. She truly was my favorite, up until--wait, this all happened yesterday. Well, she was my favorite until the events of yesterday. So, what do I do?

haven't been here in a while. just saw Thanatos' comment. Thought I oughtta clear somethin up.

My Grandmother lives in Texas. The dog is from Alaska. I wasn't worried about the dog freezing, I was worried about her cooking. My granma lives in desert country, where "it's hotter than Satan's fireplace." And the puppy was just that, a puppy. She was, seriously, only about 3 months old. I'm no veterinarian, but I think that temperatures over 100F may be a little unsafe for a puppy of that tender age.

That's it, just wanted to clear that up.

So let me get this straight:

1) Dog makes mess
2) Grandmother gets mad
3) You get pissed over grandmother getting mad
4) You leave

For some crazy reason this makes me think of a little kid running away from home.

Dogs are tough. Its fucking August, so I don't think the damned thing is going to freeze to death. Oh no! Its a different climate! Creatures will wither and die when left out for one night.

Here's a novel idea, just for you: stop acting like a petulant youth, and take responsibility.

An article that may apply to you:

http://www.wistv.com/Global/story.asp?S=1779646

Maybe you could just print that article out, toss it to your grandmother to read and make a comment like "That would be horrible if something like that would happen to you, wouldn't it? Because it can happen so easily. I mean, to tell you the truth...it has popped into my head occasionally. Are you sleepy yet?"

Correction, Naery: you WERE her favorite. Better get cracking on that apology or your inheritance is history.

Circe, ironically, I'm her favorite grandchild, so I'm sure I'm high up in the will stuff. Probably gonna get way better stuff than any of my cousins.

Old people are psychotic. Try calling her and accepting all the blame for everything. Offer to replace the carpet, whatever, because you feel so bad. Claim that the stress of travelling had gotten to you. Say anything, do whatever it takes, or the old biddy is going to leave you out the will.

Erm. I mean... or else you may lose the cherished love of a family member. Yeah.
