"Hello?"
I could hear her on the other end of the phone, quietly breathing with short sobs occasionally.
"Sarah?"
"Yeah," she said.
"What's the matter darlin'? It's pretty late." I could tell something was actually bothering her this time instead of the usual bad day at work.
I had been dating Sarah on and off for about two years and fell in love with her within the first week of meeting her. She was absolutely perfect for me. We got along amazingly and for the first time in my life I had actually wanted to spend time with this woman on a basis of other than a sexual conquest.
"I don't know. I kind of," she sobbed a little, catching her breath, "don't know where to go anymore."
"Sarah, what are you talking about? You're doing great with your work, you're almost done with school and you've got a fantastic future in front of you," I said.
"Yeah but there's just got to be something more to what I have. I feel like I'm not even close to at the level of happiness I should be having. Is there something wrong with me?" she asked.
"Absolutely not," I said as I grabbed my jacket and ran down the stairs from my apartment. It was painfully clear that I needed to be there for some reason.
"It's my fault," she said. "It's all my fault. I can't understand why I could do something so stupid."
I was starting my car when she said this. I couldn't tell where this was heading at all. Usually she was a strong person that told people what to do, and rarely made mistakes doing it.
"Where were you tonight?" I asked.
"You don't want to know," she said. "I just went out."
This wasn't normal for her. Wednesday night and she's going out? Usually not an issue if it was a friend's birthday or something else to celebrate about but on a normal occasion she would be in bed at 2am instead of calling me crying.
I drove down the icy road. It was dark and snowing lightly. The only light that was visible was my headlights and reflection off the falling snow. It looked like I was driving through space at the speed of light with the stars zooming around me.
"Sarah, did you drink tonight?"
"A little," she stammered. "I don't know how much though."
She sounded tired and about ready to pass out. Then that's when I noticed the noise.
"Are you driving right now?" I asked.
"No."
"Then why can I hear your car? You're obviously driving."
"I'm not driving. That's just... the ..." She trailed off, "Television."
I pressed the gas harder. All the things that could possibly have happened in one night to the love of my life flashed in my head. She got raped. She got robbed. She got in a car accident. She killed someone. She cheated on me.
The car noise shut off. I could hear the car door in the background open and close then the clomping of her heels on the ground of her garage floor.
"I thought you said you weren't driving," I said.
"I'm not," she shot back, obviously drunk now that she'd stood up and started moving around.
"So what happened tonight? Do you want to talk about it?" I skidded a little around a turn as I pulled onto Main Street. The roads were exceptionally slick.
"I don't know. I really don't want to talk about it," she said.
There was a long pause. I could hear her breathing in the background, obviously sitting somewhere now because there was no other noise. Probably sitting in the dark like I had found her so many nights before when I had come by. She liked the darkness because it cleared her vision and to her that cleared her mind so she could think.
"Do you love me?" The question caught me off guard. I had said it many times before to her, but she'd never asked me outright.
"Of course I love you sweetheart. I wouldn't think of anything else but you. You're the center of my attention almost everyday. I think of you when I wake up in the morning and when I go to bed at night when you're not around," I replied.
I was being sincere.
A cop drove by going the opposite direction. He looked through the snow and darkness at me. We were both going very slowly and I could tell that he had a cigarette hanging out of his mouth, the cherry getting brighter as he inhaled.
That gave me an idea, so I pulled out my pack.
I could hear Sarah take a deep breath on the other end of the phone.
"I have something to tell you," she said.
"What is it, baby?" I was ready for her to drop a bomb on me. The cheating idea came back to me. But then I realized that maybe she wanted to break up with me. This made me even more nervous because I was seriously considering asking this girl to marry me.
There was a set of headlights in the distance. I had to squint to see them through the white, fluttering flakes that were flying around my car. I lit my cigarette and looked down towards the center console to toss down my lighter.
"Come on sweetheart, what's the matter? You know you can tell me anything," I pried.
I looked up. Suddenly my car was a lot brighter inside than before. I looked to the left where the source of the light was coming from and my cigarette fell from my mouth as it opened in disbelief.
Just before the speeding vehicle careened into the side of mine, I heard Sarah say one more thing before I dropped the phone from my hand to brace for impact.
"I'm pregnant."

I hope you survived the crash because there's some shit you need to take care of.
1) "Sarah, did you drink tonight?"
"A little," she stammered. "I don't know how much though."
You gotta stop that shit if she's preggo. Mad birth defects from drinking.
2) Smoking cigarettes
You gotta stop that shit if she's preggo. Mad birth defects from smoking.

I think it had the perfect ending, much like The Lady and the Tiger. If you finish it, you will disappoint someone, no matter which way the story goes. Leave the ending to the reader. Excellent writing!
