Chapter 1: http://www.ubersite.com/m/41854 (if the link doesn't work, someone enlighten me. I wanna be a linkwhore, too!)
----------------------------------
Karen scrambled out of the surf and vomited as she collapsed on the beach. The screams had given way to hyperventilation and dry heaves, and she felt like her body had been drained of all energy. She could feel herself going into shock, and her survival instinct took over. She was shaking violently as she tried to put on her clothes, and try as she might, she couldn't bring herself to look back to the ocean. She wandered listlessly towards her car. On approaching her beloved Camaro (a graduation present from her now-deceased father), even in her state of shock, she noticed that Billy's car was gone.
She climbed in the front seat, started the car, and turned the heater on. The cold chills of shock resounded through her body like the thundering of cannons. Finally, she was able to force her eyes out over the sea. She saw nothing. The clear, blue water looked pristine in its purity. There was no blood slick; no dark water where this terrible event had taken place. Much like the ocean often does, she had taken her secret out with the tide.
Somewhere down the beach, a bull shark closed in on its prey; a seagull had been injured in a bluefish feeding, and foundered, hopeless and bleeding, in the gently breaking waves. With the fervor of a junkie, the shark lunged into the shallows, snatching the doomed bird in its razor-filled maw. The thrashing and splashing as the powerful fish struggled back into deeper water attracted the nearby scavenging birds in droves. They plucked discarded feathers from the surface fruitlessly as there were no scraps for them to enjoy. Marine life has evolved to waste nothing. The ill-fated gull's feathers will line the nest of future birds, some to attain the same fate.
Karen had to find Jenn. She knew she'd seen what had happened, and Karen had to find out what in the hell was going on. If nothing else, she owed that to Billy. The trembling had subsided to shivers, and as she reached to put the car in gear, the imminent emotional collapse crashed down upon her. What had she done? The sobs came so fast she could scarcely breathe. There had been times when she wished bad things would happen to Jenn and Billy's relationship, but that had just been jealous ramblings within her own mind. Of course, she never wanted anything bad to happen to either of them. She just wanted Billy for herself, even if she had to share. She also loved Jenn, and for years had hated herself for what she was doing. She pounded the steering wheel with her fists, screaming at God to take away this pain. In her final outburst of emotion, she collapsed back into her seat and passed out.
At some point during her collapse, the Camaro ran out of gas and the engine sputtered and died. Karen was snapped awake by someone rapping on her driver's side window. It was Jennifer. Karen scrambled out of the car, grabbed Jenn by her shoulders and slowly and deliberately gathered herself to speak.
"Jenn, what the hell just happened out there?"
"You were fucking my fiancé! It's not like I didn't know, but that you'd do that on the day of my rehearsal is unimaginable," Jenn explained, "Something had to be done."
"Oh God, Jenn. I'm so sorry. Look, it's been going on for--"
"Six years. Yeah. I knew from the start. You know as well as I that you can't keep secrets around here. Or did you forget that? I didn't know inland life had made you so jaded, Karen. It doesn't matter, really. He's gone now."
"Jenn, what the fuck happened out there? We have to tell the police, beach patrol, SOMEBODY! What if there's a shark? Someone else could get killed! What the hell is wrong with you?"
"Karen, Billy is gone. There's nothing we can do. If you insist on telling the police, go ahead. I'll be back at the house. I've sent everyone home. I really wish you'd just come with me. I have so much to show you. Trust me, he's gone."
"Jenn, I know you're still in shock, but this is serious! We have to--"
"Shut the fuck up, Karen, and listen! I'm not in fucking shock! Well, no more than anyone would be after seeing her best friend and husband-to-be having sex before the wedding rehearsal. It's done. He's gone. Tell whomever you want. No one will believe you."
Karen was shocked at the callous words coming from her friend's mouth. Jenn had never, in seventeen years, told her to "shut the fuck up". The cold emotion projected from Jenn was piercing.
"Besides, it's not like you were the only one he was screwing. Come on, Karen. We've got things to do."
The rage welled up within Karen again, "What do you mean; I'm not the only one? Fuck you! Fuck this! I have to tell someone! What about Billy's mother, for God's sake? How can you be so goddamned cold?"
"Fine," Jenn retorted, "Go tell someone. I'll be back here in two hours and then you have to come with me. It wouldn't be wise to not be here when I return. If you'll just come now, all the answers you seek will be revealed." Jennifer extended her hand towards her.
Karen reached for her hand but stopped short. Beach Patrol was coming down the parking lot and behind the wheel was James Reston, an old high school friend. The Chevy Blazer came to a stop behind Karen's car.
"Karen Mills and Jennifer Shockley. Jenn, I expect to see you here, but Karen, what brings you to town?"
Karen eyes Jennifer warily.
Jenn smiled at her, "I'll be over there. You two catch up."
"James! Oh God, James! You have to help me. Something terrible has happened to Billy!"
James looked puzzled, "Who?"
"Billy Thompson. Jenn's fiancé. We went to school with him. What the hell, James? You two were best friends at one time."
"Have you been drinking, Karen? Who the heck is Billy Thompson? And when did Jennifer get engaged? I thought I knew about every rumor in this town."
A deep, primordial terror gripped Karen's heart like the talons of a raptor.

Much better than the last. Keep working on developing your "style", and be sure to take time to revisit and edit the posts _several_ times before sending them along their way. Don't be afraid to delete entire passages, move things about, etc.
