This is an open letter to the huge conglomeration of shoe importers.
Recently I was in the market for some new shoes. Nothing fancy, something I can run in and still wear to work. At one time, those were called tennis shoes. However, the definition of a tennis shoe has changed. Apparently, there are three classes of shoes for men. Dress shoes, which I am not looking for, old men shoes, and hip-hop. The tennis shoe category has now been brotherfied.
Normal shoes, the ones without flashing lights, Michael Jordan's signature, pimp laces, and bright Technicolor diarrhea, no longer exist. The shoe manufacturers of America (or is that Malaysia?) must think that white people do not buy shoes. Their products are intended to appeal to African Americans (and others who wish to copy them) ages 13 to 25.
After searching high and low for a pair that looked somewhat normal, I finally settled on a pair. This is harder than it appears. You just cannot ask, "Hey! Where yaw keep the shoes for white folk at? I'm looking for a non-black pair." It does not work that way. I did the best I could, they sort of look goofy, but I can run in them, and they should look normal enough for work.
So... I wear them to work. I had not been there for five minutes when a voice came from the other side of the engineering department. It loudly bellowed: "Wuzzup P.Diddy?"
