This is a tough question that has been researched for many years (by many, many people). I'll try to break it down to a few general catagories though. And I do NOT claim to get them all, this is just for your amusement.
High-Strung:
This person has a very well defined morning routine. He/she knows exactly how long it takes to shower, eat, get dressed and brush his/her teeth before slipping on some shoes and bolting out the door. Keeping this in mind and counting backwards the alarm is set with about 10 seconds to spare in case something unexpected comes up. In a hurry from the moment of waking.
Snooze Junky:
This lucky person's spouse has the joy of a full hour of lost sleep listening to the alarm turning ON and OFF at 4 minute intervals because his/her spouse needs to 'wake up slowly' (you know who you are).
Mild Psychotic:
This is the one that will set the alarm for 5am on a Sunday just for the joy of being able to 'win' a round in the constant battle with the alarm. And yes, I actually knew a guy that used to do this. He highly recommended it. I never understood that.
Personally, I'm in the middle of High Strung and Snooze Junky. I have 2 alarms set 15 minutes apart and I get up on the second one. Yet no matter what method I've tried I'm late for work quite often anyway.

I would be a High Strung Snooze Junky. The first time the alarm goes off is its last; then it's snooze time until I recoil out of dreamland.

I usually set my alarm an hour earlier than I want to wake up, just because I can sleep for about that long with it going off. Then I start using the snooze button. The worst thing that happens is when you hit snooze and get up, walk back into your room and the alarm is going off again and you realize how fucking annoying that is, and get mad and now you need a new alarm. Or some tape.

I am sorry but I have to contest the name, even if it is just him sucking your cock you are evidentually gay. Sorry to burst your bubble Gnome. :) Interesting read though. Depending on what is going on in my life, I am also usually in between the snoozer and the get up right away categories. Although when I have to be somewhere that I either don't want to be or I just couldn't give two shakes I snooze it all the way till I have half hour to get ready. :)

18 minutes ahead? so the strange number is because of the math thing eh? mine's ten minutes ahead. tried the not-round number thing before, didn't work. apparently i THINK i can do math while half asleep and i was late more often.
but i can relate.

I set it early, so it compensates for the 7 times that I spike the snooze button

yes. well, that and i have the clock set 18 minutes ahead. I can't do
math in the morning so I get up thinking it is later than it actually is.
It doesn't really work that well. I am a failure!

I hit the snooze button ONCE (unless I get up right after the first alarm).

I don't even use an alarm. Somehow I always just wake up at the appropriate time.

Loren1: i came up with it and wrote it all in about 10 minutes or it probably would've had a few more thoughts in it. I'll think more about it and see what other kind of people are out there before i consider making it a FWD email. but i'm lazy, so who knows.
and i really expected the odd posative mark for what i considered a brilliant pen-name. maybe it's just because it's a running gag with my friends that i find it funny though.
details.

Really not a bad start to what could be a lasting email forward.
You should fine-tune it and come up with 3 to 6 more examples.
I wasn't on here, for example.
My story is - No matter WHAT time I manage to get up, I'm 15 minutes late for work. So lately I've just said fuckit, I'm setting my clock for 8 instead of 7. I gained an hour's sleep, and I'm still the same15 minutes late for work every day.
Works for me.

i set mine an hour and a half before i have to get to work. I get up usually half an hour before I have to be there. I've learned to prepare myself- I set out clothes the night before.

I usually set my alarm about an hour before I need to be out of the house. I don't actually take an hour to get ready, mind you; most of my morning is dedicated to sitting on the couch in front of the TV. What can I say? I'm slow to wake up.

I wonder do we really need to separate humans by how they wake up? Does this really say something about us? Or is it just the way we wake up? And why are we here anyway?
