The United States of America. Land of the free, home of the brave. Debatably the most sophisticated nation on earth. The populace here boasts freedom of speech, freedom of religion and right to a speedy trial, among other civil liberties. It would be ludicrous to say that our government hasn't done an overall good job of promoting freedom and protecting this country. But under all the love and loyalty we hold for our country, there's a war being fought, right in our backyards. One that isn't physical in the sense that Vietnam was, nor psychological in the sense that the cold war was. This is in essence, a war of morals. A war which tests and challenges a way of thinking that has been the norm for centuries. A war made up largely of propaganda and scare tactics.
The war to which I refer is the war on drugs.
I'm sure that most of you have heard about the libertarian state of Alaska. In the election to be held November 7th, voters are asked to choose whether or not they believe Marijuana should be legalized. Upon receiving this news I nearly pissed my pants. It's been a long time coming, but it's finally here. Our revolution. If the voters come through and support decriminalization the war on drugs will be one step closer to resolved and we can stop this idiocy. Stop the anti-drug ads (what the fuck are up with those!?) End the ridiculous and stereotypical image of a pot smoker as someone who is lazy or incompetent. Show the world that weed is not the spawn of Satan.
However, don't get excited yet. People are tragically misinformed. Our country's flawed drug policy has brainwashed the youth to believe that pot is a killer. That you can become physically dependent on pot. That smoking just one gets you 'hooked.' It's fucking ridiculous. Not too long ago, I myself was forced to sit through DARE. I remember that at the time I actually bought all of their bullshit. And people today are buying their bullshit. To sum it up, most people will not vote in support of legalization due to the fact that they are simply ignorant about drugs. It is not their fault; a lack of objective education is to blame.
And it's ironic, this thing that we fear so much can actually help us! There are tremendous benefits to legalization (of Marijuana and all other illegal drugs) not only for the consumers but for the government as well! Among these are: significant decrease in organized crime (and the violence associated with it), regulated purity levels to help reduce overdose, more harm reduction based programs in order to lessen diseases contracted from needles, and a large sum of money saved due to the end of drug control enforcement. Isn't it a shame that government officials refuse to look past the big bad scary appearance of drugs and into the relatively harmless world of your average pothead? Just remember, it's better for the people to make an informed and intelligent decision on whether or not to use drugs, than to get caught up in an entangling web of lies and deceit, spun by our government.

Anyway, some random guy below mentioned something about being able to work with a pot buzz and his mom's heroin buddy hanging herself.
first off, nobody said anything about being stoned all day. do you go to work drunk now? (the correct answer should be 'no') well then why would you go stoned? and next, if you can't handle your drugs, think of darwin, and stop or feel free to remove yourself from the genepool, thanks.
overall, i agree with the author. i'm not into being restricted from doing anything i choose as long as i'm not hurting anyone else. not a big fan of big governments, they should backthefuckoff and leave us alone. that's what methinks anyway.

Yes and no.
I for one don't see why I should be persecuted if I am caught with a dime
bag. It's ridicoulous that you could be a law abiding, tax paying,
responsible adult and because you get caught with pot you could
be arrested.
I do not get high and wrap my car around a tree, start fights, or
sell it to children. It has not caused me to miss any work or skip out
on my daily responsibilities. I am an adult and I have the right to do what I want
with my body as long as I am not infringing on anyone else's rights.
Decriminalize it and set laws, age restrictions, laws against smoking in
public. Tax it. Spend the money on real drugs that are a burden on
society such as heroin and crack.
My lord, freakin' tobacco kills thousands per year. It's legal.
Alcohol, when used irresponsibly, kills thousands per year. It's legal.

The last figure I saw was that the War on Drugs cost this country seventeen billion dollars a year. That's billion with a b. Imagine what that amount of money could do for our public schools, care for the elderly, the healthcare system, etc. All it takes is one phone call and ten minutes and I can have any type and quantity of drug I want delivered to my front door easier than ordering pizza. Tell me that the "war" is working.

Whoa, all of you people hating on the stoners need to take a step back and think. Alcohol once was prohibited, but now is leagal. Sweet, sweet Mary Jane is legal in Amsterdam and doesn't cause that many problems considering the difference between it located in a legal area anf a illegel area. In holland if you get out of hand because you under the influence, then local authorities will taek care of you quickly and painfully. To also add to things, I've seen the same people who get violent when they drink, in turn are really passive when they are high.

I live in Wisconsin and have been to Canada many a time. I have found that the pot up there is more potent, but not so much so that I'd want to drive up there to get it. Plus, the smell is very noticable when smoking that really strong shit, stains my clothes.

Btw since I started smoking pot I: have not missed a day of work, started making an extra 5 dollar an hour, completely excel at my job and my boss calls me brother(and no, he's not black). What can I say; pot fixes ADD better then fucking over-the-counter speed (Ritalin). I memorized the location of 10,000 stock items in about 2 weeks and developed new system saves everyone about an hour everyday when entering data. (Five people in my department, one hour a day for each person; you do the math on what they save in man-hours in year)
But then again, what do I know. I'm just a dumb fuck that smokes pot because I'm too dumb to do anything else. I just hope I can find the submit button.

I for one, believe you are completely right one this. I hate that the conception most people have of anyone who smokes pot, is that they're idiots. I smoked weed thoughout highschool, and was a national honor student.
THC does not change your intelligence or your tallent. It only affects your ambition. If you're naturally a stupid, lazy fuck, then of course you're going to be a stupid, lazier fuck if you smoke weed, but you can't blame your uselessness on marijuana.

Legalizing marijuana would only lead to more problems. We have enough problems with people who abuse alcohol, look at the rate of DUI/DWI and alcohol related vehicle accidents. Legalizing another substance that impairs cognitive function will only increase the number of accidents.
Good on you if you are a responsible user, but widespread legalization is -not- the answer. People cannot be trusted as a whole to be responsible users. Alcohol proves that.

The baby story is actually an Urban Legend. However, I can understand your reluctance to legalize other drugs. You, like most other Americans, have been led to believe through media that all Heroin users are addicts, and all addicts are junkies. When, in truth, that is simply wrong. I know many people who are able to use Heroin responsibly, meaning they are able to limit themselves by only using on weekends. It is a mistruth that you can inevitably become addicted to heroin (or other harder drugs) by infrequent and responsible use. I went through my whole first year of college using on weekends. And I'd probably do it more often if I had the money.
But I prefer pot anyway.

Think about it some, you can go to work with a weed buzz, you can be somewhat competant with a weed buzz. But what about crystal meth? Herion?
