I was driving to school and I heard it. A plane crashed into the WTC.

Another plane.

My phone started ringing. "Oh my god, did you hear??" My sister screamed into the phone.

I couldn't breathe. I couldn't drive. I couldn't think. I couldn't react. My brother in law called next, "Corinne, be careful. Tell Midu to be careful, too... things will get crazy."

Then my dad. "Go home. Don't go to school today, just go home. Go." I went to school anyway. The lobby was crowded with students. We were all staring at the tv with blank looks on our faces, and death in our eyes. "This just in. A plane has crashed into the Pentagon." The reporter could not keep the emotion out of her voice, I could not keep the sob from escaping my mouth.

This was the first and only time I have felt pure and utter terror.

No one was allowed to fly. Because I live only 40 miles from Metro airport, I was used to planes going overhead, and it was noticeably quiet durring the No Fly period. On September 12 school was canceled. I woke up early, grabbed a beer, and went to sit on my patio.

I heard a low rumble. I couldn't tell what it was or where it was coming from. Within seconds I didn't have to wonder- a huge military jet was carening in the air above me. It was flying lower than I have ever seen a plane fly, faster than I imagined possible, almost louder than I could bear. My mouth dropped open, my beer fell out of my hand and crashed on the concrete by my feet. Instinctivly my hands flew to my ears- So Loud.

Once I gained the ability to react, I ran into the parking lot, to better observe the sky. Then I saw it- off just a bit- over Michigan Stadium- a small Cesna. The jet was flying towards it.

I ran inside and grabbed my camera. Fuck, no film.

Fumbled around, put the film in, slapped the back closed. I was shaking. I couldn't breathe. My phone was ringing. Tears sprang to my eyes, I heard myself saying,

ohmygodohmygodohmygodohmygod

The two planes did a macabre dance in the sky. Flying side by side for a minute, twirling around each other a bit, and then they both flew away. The jet was gone within seconds, and I watched the slow departure of the small white cesna.

I checked my phone. 8 missed calls. I started calling them back, I went in the house and turned on the news.

Turns out that it was just some stupid fuck who didn't know he wasn't allowed to fly.

I wonder how long it took him to clean the mess out of his plane- because there is no way he survived that air balet with his bowels intact.

I've seen the numbers "9/11" so fuckin' often that it gives me nausea whevener I see it. "Iraq", "Bush" and "americans" are slowly giving me the same effect.

Nothing against those really. It's just an overdose. We should talk about different words like asparagus for instance.

Just because it happened a few years ago doesn't make it any less poignant.

Personally I think we have over-reacted to the whole terrorist thing which plays into their hands.

If you took the politicians and the media out of the picture we would all probably be a whole lot happier and feel a whole lot safer.

Terrorism works because of the media.

I guess "Made me smile" wasn't appropriate.
