You're referring to outdated Hindu laws that are only present in the tribal cultures of India. In 1950, tribes made up 7% of the Indian population. Of these, Hindu tribes with the laws you speak of made up about 0.5% of the overall Indian population (most tribes were magico-religiously non-affiliated due to the pre-culture contacts era).
Now tribes make up less than 1% of the Indian population. Hindu tribes would make up, lets say, around 0.05% or some ridiculously tiny number like that, of the population. So when you generalize that "women in India are basically just waiting to die" you're talking about 1 woman of a billion Indian women.
When you consider general Hindu religious laws today, divorce is legal. Widows can remarry. Child marriage is illegal in every possible way.
So yeah, you've either been reading textbooks from the 1920's, or propping up the unfortunate "ignorant American who believes that every country with less than 500 Targets every 10 blocks is a backward shithole" stereotype. I hope that clears up some stuff.

I think women should be born without ovaries, and when they want to have babies, they can purchase a set of ovaries at an Ovary Bank (like a sperm bank, but self-sufficient). That way, they won't have to splooge their tampon commercials on tv as often, and we won't have any un-planned pregnancies, because those who want a baby'll have to get through the red tape first.

I personally feel single mothers have it rough and I sympathize with their situation. I never blame them, because it usually takes a guy somewhere in their life to get pregnant in the first place. These guys are let off the hook for some reason, and that's ridiculous.
I'm talking from experience, not out of my ass like many others who write here. You can bet I know people that are very close to me that are single mothers and I know they had it rough. Without the help of their own family, I don't know how they could have made themselves as successful as they are today.
A single mother who raises a child 100% on her own and does well is a rare thing, and she should be commended on that. It's insanely difficult one could only imagine.

Anyone who would suggest that single mothers are no different from mothers that have husbands has got to be hitting the crack pipe hard. But don't believe me, look at the studies out there and ignore the ones that say that boys brought up in a fatherless home are 2-3 times more likely ( 200-300% higher chance of) getting involved in crime. Girls are 2-3 times more likely to get pregnant as a teenager. Did you know 70% of the prison population grew up in fatherless homes? Another fact that you may choose to ignore. It is highly likely you have the numbers reversed, Circe. 1 in a dozen single mothers ARE successful.
Kristen probably is one of these 12, but do not blind yourself to the fact that single mothers all have it good. There are many who do not have family to lean on, and this is a huge factor.
Kristen, I think you understand that I am not bashing single mothers as some attack on you. I truly feel that these statistics do not apply to you because you are already above them to begin with. You already made a success of yourself. You have an education and real job. Do you know how many single mothers do not possess this? I'm going to guess the vast majority of them. I do not need statistics to look that one up. 77% or so of them work, but what kind of work? 18,000 a year average income with $3,700 being in child support for the 1/3 of mothers who receive it.
Oh yeah...and who says Kristen is actually going to BE a single mother? The second she gets married down the road this guy will assume the role of father to her kid. We don't know her personal life and I don't think we should care to pry into it. Who the fuck are we? Her parents?
My only point was trying to make that single mothers DO have it rough and the numbers are not on their side. You people take it as some attack on Kristen? Hell no. It's far from that.
Circe, you are an intelligent person. Please do some research of your own to dispell that myth in your head about single mothers being no worse off than married ones.
As for the millions of reasons a woman gets pregant to a loser being just one of them...that's laughable. What are the reasons a woman can get pregnant and be forced to pick up the slack on her own? A "Loser" fits a wide variety of guys from one night stands to people who bail out. Jobless, drug addicted, abusive, and that list goes on and on... That's a "loser" in my book. Any father who would not WANT to be in their own child's life would fit this description. Next up: Death. Someone dies. That's understandable and unpreventable. Next? A woman WANTS to have a child on their own. This happens, but usually at an older age.
Now it's your turn, Circe. There are only millions of more reasons.

Well, then I'm happy I'm wrong. I'm not saying that it fit her situation, as a matter of fact I hoped for the opposite.
I just personally know alot of women who wound up pregnant by losers...and they not only had to support the child themselves, they supported a deadbeat loser until they decided to give them the boot after many chances to make ammends.
If you do not know anyone in this situation, you are a lying bastard or you live a life well above the rest of us somehow. (Maybe you're from India where pre-arranged marriages are made and divorce is not allowed?)

Figure this...Kristen works a decent job while this guy is probably unemployed or has a dead end job. Maybe he thinks putting in 8 hours a day on the xbox is good enough?

And actually they are 'winners', raising kids is hard enough, let alone by yourself, (if that IS the case, since most of the people doing the gossiping probably don't know her personally). Loren, she just meant i was entitled to unemployment insurance for my service, and i've been paying taxes for about 8 years, so i shouldn't feel like a leech if i file for it. i really hate to accept a check for being unemployed, but i don't feel too bad. at least i'm not like those worthless assholes who don't care about working and still expect a check for it.
i don't feel so bad now, though, because job offers have been rolling in lately. i just got two today. i turned down a senior systems engineer job here in St. Louis (on paper, i'm not even ready for a senior position, either). that hurt, because i'd love to do it, but i need to get my ass to Chicago. i've already been here, done that.
