INTERNATIONAL AGENCY FOR MYSTIC INVESTIGATION AND RESPONSE

North American Division...

Agency Journal ver 2.35.01

Welcome Director Taela Smith

Press any key to add an entry for Sept 20, 2004...
----------------------------------------------------

This investigation may just drive me mad.

It's been 4 weeks and we have yet to make any real headway. I am doing my best to coordinate this mess with the CIA, FBI and CSIS while at the same time directing agency resources.

So far we've been able to determine the identities of thirty of the bodies removed from the Antique Shop where this whole mess started. One of the bodies belonged to the shops true owner, another to Margaret Bellamy, a relatively renowned Seer.

God, the things he did to his victims... The lab tells me there is evidence of sexual torture on almost all them. The depravity of this guy goes well beyond anything we have seen from previous Necromancers. I am NOT going to go into detail, the images of what I have seen haunt my sleep enough as it is. Unfortunately there doesn't seem to have been any rhyme or reason for his selection of the majority of his victims. They range in age from 11 to 77 and there is no discernible pattern to gender, race or profession. Karen Milton (Our Chief Cleric) tells me the oldest undead had been turned approximately 6 months previous to Agent Anaka's intervention. Lab results verify her report.

The identity of the Necrosiac killed by Agent Anaka remains a mystery.

I have a feeling there is some significance to the number of undead he had at his disposal (33) but our researchers have been unable to dig anything up. Our CIA resources have been trying to work with Russian Intelligence to find documents pertaining to the last Necrosiac occurrence during WW2 but to date have found nothing. The Russians say much of their intelligence was lost during the fall of the Soviet Union. The CIA tells me the documents were probably sold.

We are fighting an enemy based on questionable facts taken from myth. We are fighting an enemy that probably knows more about us than we do of them. The simple fact is we know next to nothing.

Nothing... that word comes up a lot in my reports to the Council.

Needless to say the Press are having a field day. I'm going to have to tell them the truth one day soon... but not today. They haven't linked the disappearance of Charlie Foster (Dr Diablo) yet but it's probably only a matter of time. I have instructed the Team Leads for the investigation not to discuss the true nature of the enemy with their subordinates but it's inevitable that it will eventually leak out. Too many people know.

I wonder which agency will leak it first? My guess is the FBI. They have already admitted to the fact that the list of names found by Agent Pitt probably came from them. Apparently the Analyst charged with compiling a listing of the top 100 casters in the world disappeared without a trace shortly after it was completed a little over a year ago.

I think there's a good chance the names of the people we have from the list will eventually find its way to the press as well.

Once that happens the powers-that-be are going to be screaming for results and then my head if we don't come up with anything

Charlie Foster was a dead end just like the Antique shop. He was last seen by his manager leaving the back of the Stadium where he disappeared accompanied by two adults. Unfortunately he admits to having been heavily intoxicated at the time and the images our Seers pull from his head are too fuzzy to give an accurate description. If it weren't for the list found by Agent Pitt we probably wouldn't even be aware of the connection.

Foster was an incredibly talented Illusionist. I shudder to think about what is going to happen once they have full command of that ability.

Note: Make sure all teams are outfitted with infrared equipment.

Our Analysts have managed to pull an additional 7 names out of the mess of bodies from the shop bringing the total of known potential targets to 12. Nick tells me that we could be missing as many as 20 more. We have managed to locate 9 of the potential victims so far (Including Agent Pitt) and I have had them temporarily relocated to various safe houses. God I hope this ends soon. I can't keep these people locked away forever. A couple of them are celebrities.

I've assigned teams to watch Pitt's and Anaka's apartments around the clock but so far the Necrosiacs haven't taken the bait.

Pitt and Anaka have been directed to give assistance to the Lead Investigators as well as their usual reconnaissance role. I have taken the liberty of adding Markus Tasker to their recon team as additional protection for Pitt. Tasker is an experienced agent and Class 3 Mage. He's proven himself a valuable asset on more than one occasion and I feel if anyone can protect Pitt it's him. Pitt was belligerent at first and considers Tasker to be a glorified baby sitter but he followed orders nevertheless and Tasker tells me there are no significant personality conflicts occurring within the trio.

I wonder if he would be honest with me if there were issues? He's a good man but his ambition sometimes makes him overly eager to please. He also has an annoying habit of calling me "Sista" as if the fact that we're both black should allow him familiarities that aren't afforded the white agents. I have asked him to address me professionally but he always seems to find a way to slip the word into our conversations.

God I could use some sleep. I feel like I'm aging a year for every day that goes by. I find myself looking in the mirror and telling myself the lines on my face will go away when this is all over. Now that I write this I doubt it's true.

Anyways.

I'm trying to remain positive about our chances to save lives but part of me knows that more people will die before this comes to an end.

Where are the Necrosiacs!?

Stevens used the word "Penance" during his trance state but Intelligence hasn't been able to tie it to a location. Necromancers try to do almost everything in threes and I have a feeling the rule applies even more to Necrosiacs. They must have at least two more residences aside from the shop.

BUT WHERE?

Once again we have nothing.

Nothing. Nothing. Nothing.

That word might very well be inscribed on my tombstone.

My guess is they've been busy elsewhere. For all I know they've been collecting casters that we aren't aware of. I shudder to think of the kind of power they could have growing inside them by now.

In the end the threat they pose may have to be ended by the military.

I'm getting desperate.

I sent Agent Anaka's team back to the shop today in the hope they will find something that was missed during the initial sweep but I don't have high hopes.

Sometimes it feels like we are hunting ghosts. I feel like a dog chasing its tail, or more correctly, a shadow of its tail.

I hate the fact that we are probably going to have to wait for them to make a mistake before we can act.

I hate them.

I want to kill them for what they did to Monty.

Why haven't they gone after Pitt? They aren't behaving like the impulsive children that the profilers say they are.

Unless...

What if they don't have the full list either? What if their father didn't communicate it to them? The fact that they took Foster tells me they must have something, but what if their information is incomplete? What if they have names but no addresses and lack the means to get them..."

If I found a way to leak Pitts address to them would I be signing the Necrosiacs death warrants or betraying an Agent?

Probably both.

My need for revenge is great but I have the strength to deny it in the face of duty. What I cannot deny is the necessity to place several agents in great peril in an attempt to save the lives of innocents I am sworn to protect and besides, the agents in question knew the risks when they signed on with the agency. Would I be betraying Pitts confidence if he already thinks the enemy knows how to find him?

I don't care.

I'm running out of time.

Dr Tyler got the tests back today and tells me the tumor in my head is inoperable and I could have as little as 6 months if I don't start a steady regimen of Chemo and Cleric. He threatened today to pull me from the investigation but I reminded him of a past favor.

He'll keep quiet for now.

The headaches are getting worse but I can still do my job and I haven't had any seizures. That's a good sign isn't it?

I'm going to go ahead with leaking the information. I think I just figured out a way to do it.

Who knows, maybe my next entry will have good new.

Why can't I just keep a diary under my bed like other women?

----------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Taela saved the entry and shut down the program. She took a sip of the lukewarm coffee in her mug and let her eyes rest on the small silver rune covered box on her desk. She closed them in concentration for a moment, then opened them and quickly scribbled a quick sentence on her notepad. She scrutinized the note for a second then began to strategically adjust the items on the top of her desk. Several minutes later she sat back and smiled ruefully as she surveyed the results. It looked good.

She stood up released the catch on the boxes lid and flipped it open. A quick look at her clock told her she was going to be late for her press conference so she picked up her briefcase and quickly left her office.

Behind her on the desk the cold florescent light of her office glinted dully from the platinum shards in their black velvet lined bed.

Why is this rated so low? It was just as good as the rest of the series.

Oh, that's right. Some people are retarded.

Not as good as the other installments, but necessary for the overall story. Still easily worth a +2.

This reads like a novel, and so must have contextual pieces to keep the momentum going. This isn't supposed to be all action, all the time.

Beautiful.

The depth of this - her despair, her fear, and her resolute sense of duty - surprised the hell out of me.

Very, very nicely done.

Slower than previous instalments but nevertheless adding more depth to the series as a whole. Every time I see a new instalment posted I literally whisper "yay!" and dive right in. You really are an exceptional writer, please keep up the good work.

A relatively boring story but I felt it was necessary to add depth and tie up loose ends. I am half way through the next one and it is much better (and longer).
