She hated Allie. She didn't even know her, but she hated her. Not cat-fight, on the floor clawing the girl's eyes out hate, but a more gentle, burning hate.
Carolynn had met Aaron years and years ago, back when they were both kids playing "Doctor". She didn't know when she fell for him, but it happened seamlessly, and by now Carolynn had taken for granted that the only one for her was Aaron.
They fit together like the pieces of a puzzle. She was a quiet, shy girl. She was plain by some standards but attractive to those who appreciated her. Most of the time she dressed down, baggy sweatshirts and a baseball cap slapped over her dusty brown ponytail. He liked the shy, quiet girls. He wanted a girl that would dress down, that was beautiful without trying: never needing to wear makeup or pretty things to convince herself or anyone else of her value. He wanted a girl that was reserved in public and wild in the bedroom, a girl that belonged to him and only him.
Carolynn wanted to be that girl.
But Carolynn didn't get to see him very much anymore. He flickered in and out of her existence. And then there was Allie. Allie was his girlfriend, of course. She wasn't his first-high-school-sweetheart love; that had been a girl by the name of Julia, a girl gone and faded. Allie seemed to be the most unlikely girl for Aaron, actually. Carolynn had never even met her. All she knew about Allie were small details Aaron let slip, small bits about her (Allie was "very pretty", according to Aaron, and she was "smart, if lacking in common sense"). Carolynn knew of Allie's existence though, and that was enough.
It simply wasn't fair. Carolynn had been waiting patiently for Aaron for most of her life. She waited and waited and he never fell for her. He invited her to the forest preserves one day, and she knew what that meant. It was her chance to change things. Later it turned out he only had wanted to go to the park and talk like old friends. She was furious with herself, how could she have ruined it?
Carolynn really didn't know where to turn, and so she scrawled an email to her best friend, fully away of how lonely and overdramatic she felt in doing this.

I screwed up bigtime with Aaron. I've decided that I've given up. Do I always have to go unnoticed? On the one hand the guy that I like is dating another girl... she's totally not right for him and is clueless to me liking him...You know what I see? I see all of these happy people with their happy relationships and it's just burying me...but I guess that's what a guy wants, a girl all over him in public and in private.

Allie was bored.
So here she was, staring at a computer screen. The days were starting to run together though, and she really WAS bored. She wrote it off to that.
"In tomorrow I see no promise, and yesterday was like today."
Every day that she woke up it was constant. The only thing that kept her going was the thought that for some reason, Aaron was still with her. Yet they were so different, there were so many things about her that grated on his nerves slowly.
She liked to dress up, to look pretty. Some people called her naturally beautiful because she didn't wear any makeup, but she cared far too much what others thought of her. She was such a "student", focused on her goals and slowly but surely tackling everything the system could throw at her. Aaron loved Allie for that, for her ambition and passion, but the fact still remained that everyone else had no idea why they were together.
He told her "No matter what anyone says, if you think you're right for me, and I think you're right for me, we're right for each other". And so she ignored everything. He was wonderful, how could she not?
But here she was, sitting in front of the fucking computer screen, reading these words in her inbox: "she's totally not right for him". Aaron had told her Carolynn and him were friends, nothing more. But she had stumbled on this, a friend of a friend of a friend had thought she should see it, and she knew, she just KNEW that the mystery girl was herself. "A girl all over him in public and in private" - that hurt. How could Allie help it? She loved Aaron, she couldn't keep her hands off him
Allie wanted so much, right then, to hate Carolynn. She wanted to scream and hit someone. But she couldn't.
"Did Babylon resemble this? Are we getting any closer to the end of the list?"
Allie couldn't hate Carolynn because she was clearly a sweet girl. She was clearly the kind of girl that was good for Aaron. And she sympathized with her. Somehow Allie had become "that other girl". The girl that you love to hate because she doesn't deserve the guy that she's with, because she's wrong for the guy she's with, and because there's some other girl who would do the job so much better. Some other girl who would kill to be in her place. Like Carolynn. And Allie was helpless.
"We teach them how to make a fist, but not to resist"
In tomorrow there is no promise, because every day really is like today. She would wake up tomorrow and it would all be the same, with a new infinitesimally small problem designed to eat away at her slowly.

Sting. Sting would be another person who's a hero. The music he's created over the years, I don't really listen to it, but the fact that he's making it, I respect that.

I believe that picture resulted from a google search for "Slaughter on 10th Avenue", though I'm not entirely sure.
