At least when it comes to emotional intelligence. Geez, listening to Barbara read it was like she had never told a joke before. She was either modeling her delivery on Keanu Reeves or Data from Star Trek. Seriously the writing was TERRIBLE. Whoever wrote the line about "My parents are cool because they know when we talk about outkast we are talking about a band and not social misfits" should be adding to the unemployment numbers right now. It was not even close to the voice of those girls or anyone else who was born after 1960. "Social misfits" geez. I should be a speechwriter.

Seriously Barbara went to Yale and despite the whole legacy thing that means she is smart and probably smarter than most people I hang out with. She also said she was not political and she does not like the limelight so criticizing her poor delivery is stupid. It also makes me feel guilty because I was merciless about Chelsea who could not help that her dad was immoral or that her hair looked like it came out of one of those play dough squeeze molds. Anyway that speech by the twins was the worst of the convention because it was not written by them, it did not sound like them, and whoever thinks these constant references to fighting between the Bush family is funny is wrong (if you only get to see the primetime speechs you would not know that the same jokes have been used in W is for Women rally etc.)

Now in my last review I criticized FDR references, which some people said was divisive in their replies. Look I love many things about the Republican party but I am critical of everything, and anything as large as a party or a convention is going to have many things I do not like. I do not blindly support anyone or any group (although I must say I am VERY defensive about America when I am abroad because I think it is so much better than alternative forms of government etc.) On with the review...

Last night first of all the parties. The truth at both the RNC and DNC conventions is that the people with the good tickets are the politicians themselves and their families, and the people who have lots of money. That is similar to concerts. A party that I can get into I usually do not want to go to as much as one that I cannot, and so you see that happening on a massive scale with people milling about trying to decide if this is the most exclusive place they can go. Because I really do not care too much to try to network at most parties (I am there to have fun more than to make connections for the future) people often mistake me for someone who is somewhat important. When you do not give out your card but you have a card worthy job at some organization that is somewhat connected people assume you think they are not important enough to talk to after that party and so they work harder to make you realize they are. It is kind of funny, but also annoying. Anyway there was a party last night that was 1k per ticket that I could not go to, and the ones I did attend where fun. The people who have all the tickets are the professional schmoozers, the lobbyists, who are kind of like scalpers for those desperate for political connections. I end up making friends with other people who like to have fun and like getting pancakses at 3 am and laughing at funny stories and so I have been blessed to get to go to several fun events. Talking about when and where they are would make me way too much like wonkette, and I hate the bragging. This way you can just think I went to better parties than I could get into. They were fun, lasted late and the talk at all of them had the consensus that I am right about the first paragraph and the bush girls speech and that I Thune will beat Daschle.

That will be awesome because Daschle has been obstructing the judges forever and I will be glad to see him gone! So glad that I wrote a whole new paragraph to emphasize the greatness of his defeat!

Anyway Ahnuld had a good speech. Many said it was great. I do not consider them to be my intellectual equals...hahahah just kidding (kinda). Arnold has off the charts emotional intelligence and a smile that made me consider getting caps. He is also much smarter than I gave him credit for. Yet his speech was full of zingers and one liners that were fun and good soundbites but frustrating to one who bemoans the change from the Lincoln Douglass debates to "economic girly men" as political discourse. It was what it was, and we agree on small goverment, low taxes, the beauty of freedom and possibility for immigrants and that we need a strong national defense. We also agree that he is a better politician than an actor.

Laura was sweet and talked about stuff other than defense. The Republican party is not trying to scare everyone, they just looked at the polls coming in and realize that most people trust them alot more than the Democrats to keep them safe. That is why they keep talking about the war on terror. It could be because many democrats are like the person who replied to my last post that terrorism is not a threat anymore, but it is more likely because the Democrats including John Kerry has repeatedly voted to cut funding for defense, cut funding for intelligence and weaken our national security. They have also hysterically and often falsely decried things like the patriot act that make us safer in the name of protecting our civil liberties. I had to read that cumbersome document and I can tell you as someone with a legal education and some background in parsing through what legislation means, that the Patriot Act made it easier to track terrorists by allowing that category to exist in addition to the category of organized crime (mafia) that already existed and on which ALMOST ALL of the provisions were modeled (the over 30 year old bill that allowed the FBI etc to combat the mob) including the stupid library thing. Ashcroft does not want to read your library list like Big Brother in 1984, he wants to ensure that when they are building the case against a terrorist or preventing future attacks they can use that information and I am glad that they can. The government is made up of people, and people are too flawed to ever fully realize the authoritarian control contemplated by many of my delusional friends on the right who see everything as a liberty encroachment. However the Patriot Act is not that, and the truth is that PC concerns from the left have made fighting the war on terror much more difficult. Old women and men unless they are from Saudi Arabia should not be searched anymore at the airport. Give me a break. That kind of garbage is not coming from the right and George Bush will prosecute the war on terror differently from Kerry. That is what Rudy meant when he said he grabbed his police commisioner after 9/11 and said "Thank God Bush is President."

The best speech probably was given by the Liet. Gov of Maryland Michael Steele who is the GOP's answer not as much to Barak Obama as to Harold Ford. Unlike Obama he does not resemble the child of a Ferengi from Star Trek and a vampire bat but like him, he is a wonderfully gifted communicator. He is not just a rising star, he is now probably in the top 10 GOP leaders (in the public eye).

Bill Frist was also great, though not as good a speaker as Rudy, he delivered a wonderful address that had good substance. As a doctor he took a lot of shots at Edwards but they ring true. Trial lawyers are awful and have really drained the economy and do not help poor people.

Finally I cannot help but respond to one criticism of Rudy's speech. Since some people obviously are unaware of the connection between what he talked about with the murder of Leon Klinghoffer and Iraq, let me make the connection, those terrorists hid in Iraq during Husseins tenure and were then when we took him down. There were also other terrorist groups in Iraq. I loved it when Rudy said we took the battle to the terrorists on their shores and I think he is right. For someone to say they hate us because of our meddling into their countries is ignorant at best. They (the terrorists like Al Qaeda) hate us because they are part of a religious sect within Islam that hates Christians, that hates Jews, that hates pluralism, that hates tolerance, that hates diversity etc. That religious ideology is not theirs because they are poor and oppressed, it has been funded by wealthy muslims in recent times, and currents of abusing religion to justify violence has been a favorite pastime of the wealthy from many religions throughout history. These terrorists do hate us, and leaving and isolating will not solve the problem. They want nothing less than a world united under their sick brand of Islam that was seen best in the rule of the Taliban but is now seen best in the Sudan. Far better that these murderers (and I lustily applauded the recognition of Arafat as one of them) fight our armed forces in the middle east, than that they do to us what they are doing in Russia. The last thing from the convention is that everyone is praying for the situation in Russia and I know we all regardless of our political beliefs join in sending our thoughts and prayers for a good resolution to the taking of those children.

the girl's talking was probably the best part of the convention, or at least the 45 mins or so that i watched.

playing on 11 sept. for approval? disgusting

giuliani's 'convincing' statments about our countries, sorry i mean the US government's decisions to attack iraq? childs play and flat out lies.

caula as I said I do need to proofread. I also like making fun of my tend towards elitism. It is just the fact that most people I know think Arnold gave the best speech that makes me a little sad. I think if she ran in 2008 for the democrats there is a good chance Oprah could be President and that makes me a little disappointed. Most Americans are full of celebrity worship to an extent, and many Americans are much happier with a funny 1 liner than a long explanation of policy.

Razor, I would say I am a libertarian on every issue except abortion. I want gov. to be about 1/5 the size it is now and I think the war on drugs has to be radically altered and the judicial system needs big changes. Thanks for all the hard work on uber madness. I promise to write and revise.

>> My parents are cool because they know when we talk about outkast we are talking about a band and not social misfits

Except when Outkast made their first record, SPCM, they made it clear on there that they are named 'Outkast' because that is what they are. Outcasts. A little ghetto spelling change, but same idea. Not accepted by society. So they (the drunk slut sisters) can't really be fans, because they love society and the assholes that govern it.

"My parents are cool because they know when we talk about outkast we are talking about a band and not social misfits"

-------------------------------

Gee, I wonder if this was an attempt at appealing to the black voters. You know those girls don't listen to Outkast.
----------------------------------------

Of course they do. They do more coke than Columbia and they're slores.

-----------------------------------

I would say "Of course they do, they're young white girls from the suburbs." except that Outkast is actually pretty alright.

Does that mean you're both really libertarians?

Kind of all over the place, but still good.

I visibly flinched when Ahnold pulled out "economic girly-men." Way to pander to the lowest common denomenator there buddy. We've got great ideas and policies, way to cheapen them.

That really ticked me off, but I thought the rest of his speech was pretty good. Very forward looking and hopeful.

Wish I would have seen Laura Bush speak. Bet that was good.

And oh how I hope you are right about Daschle. Can't wait until Bush gets the chance to fix the Court during his next term.

yeah the bush twins speech pissed me off. it was so lame and stupid that i cringed when i watched it. i eventually had to change the channel.

i literally cringed when jenna said, "my grandmother thinks that 'Sex in the City' is what old people do and don't talk about." fucking retarded.

overuse of seriously? Yep...perhaps I need to rethink the speechwriting gig, or at least reread what I write once before I submit it.
